The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

So I decided to start playing again, and I have to say. It really does have the crappiest community. :lol
The constant quits and vote kicking. Has made it quite impossible to play a game for more then 10minutes. The game is so much fun still, but the community seems to be regressing still.

Also, I didn't enjoy the melee too much either.

GT is TheDiabolical if you anyone wants to play on 360. just send a msg that your from GAF.
 
Absolutely LOVE the melee changes. Played some fools in L4D that clearly relied on melee-spamming before and they got wrecked. Such a wonderful feeling.
 
Has anyone been having issues joining and or creating lobbies recently?(L4DPC) Joining a lobby/friend's game results in a disconnection, while creating a lobby results in a disconnection after a longer-than-usual setup process. The only option that really works (at least for me) is "Quick Match". It seems like several people have already posted threads up on the steam community forums related to this, but I've been wondering if it's only a handful of people experiencing this.



EDIT: I've also noticed this happens when trying to connect to servers from the browser history.

If its PC... Steam sometimes goes on the fritz and shows no achievements, but they soon return.
pc, well I hope they do return I was only 10k from zombie the genocide achievement
 
Man, I played some versus over the weekend for the first time in a couple weeks. First time I played since the who-goes-first change, tank-hits-multiple-people change, and now the melee change.

Those changes make versus SOOOO MUCH BETTER!! It's so incredibly challenging, yet so rewarding, when you actually manage to make it to safety on a level.

Had an amazing survival run on vs last night. NM4, after the elevator, a witch was right by the first pull-off point, and then a Tank comes rushing at us, too. We ran back towards the elevator, but didn't make it. One player died. Viz and I were down, and Pop was next to me. He got Huntered, I shot the Hunter off him, he starts picking me up, someone as a Smoker pulls Pop, I think Viz killed him. See a Boomer coming from behind Viz, and I kill the Boomer..not sure if it was too close to Viz or not.

Pop picks me up, and a Hunter pounces him and downs Pop. I pick up Pop and Viz during the no special time, and we all heal and make it to the end. Quite exciting!

On our infected turn, the other team dupes the witch, but she gets one guy. One or two people had molotovs, and I was going to grab one of them, but I grab Bill instead (they were watching out for the Tank, so I pulled him off the building from behind). Francis is in front of Bill for awhile but doesn't release him, and our Tank punched a forklift thing right in front of Francis, so he got trapped by the forklift with Bill right behind him. :lol

NM3 was pretty funny; I got Tank right by the gas station. They had 2 or more molotovs, so I hit one guy hanging out inside the gas station with a rock, and they were trying to lure me to get mol'd, but I stayed away by the semi truck. Nabs snuck out next to the truck, and I incapped him while being right next to the other players but behind a wall. After incapping Nabs, I ran for one person, who I think got Huntered. It was just a lot of lol's.

Oh and this happened the other day..game made the team I was on go first (I think we were human first on map 1):

Final score tie..so much they could do to break it up. Hopefully it wouldn't resort to 'most zombies killed' or some kind of stat..certainly I'd enjoy the way to break up a tie would be a sudden death map or two.
 
Viz says that if you get 'stuck' in midair (usually? or always? by a Tank punch), that if you hit 'jump' like mad, you can get out of it/teleport away..will have to try that. Getting "stuck" has only happened to me once, but I've seen it about 5x that I can remember, and more of those times have been since the last couple of patches.

In a recent update for L4D on the PC, we provided the option for players to choose between starting a game on an Official server or the Best Available. This is just the first step in giving players control over what servers they play on and the type of experience they have.

This is part of the L4D SDK rollout, which is currently in a closed beta and will be released shortly after the launch of the L4D Survival Pack.

To support the SDK, we are extending the matchmaking system to allow for third party campaigns. We will be adding extra features so players will be able to find dedicated servers running the campaigns they have installed. They will also be able to see friends playing third party campaigns, and be directed to download them as necessary. Another major feature we are planning to add to the matchmaking system at a future date is team-based Versus matching. This will allow two teams of four to locate each other and compete in a Versus match.

We are also revamping our player matching based on skill level. Currently the system tries to match people with the same skill level and best pings together. We will be revisiting this system to tweak it based on data we have collected.

For next week's blog post, we are going to look at the process of creating the box art.

so now SDK is AFTER the DLC? when did that change? skill level based system could be problematic.... hopefully they do it on a team base rather then an individual base. the two teams of four have been something a lot of people have been talking about for a while now so its nice that that will be there.

Well I assume the matchmaking only applies with "Quick Match" (hopefully anyway). Up until now I've always bookmarked some west coast servers so that Pop and the rest of us could play at decent pings (most of the time). On the other hand, glad to hear about the party system. I know a lot of people that have been wanting this.
 
How in the fuck can they claim that the game currently attempts to match players based on skill/ping (at least on 360)? I usually go in with 2 or 3 friends and I think so far in 2009 we have lost two games, and one of those was to Shake's crew (who won the Eurogamer tourney) so I'm not even sure that one counts. And it's not like it's usually close, we usually completely dominate the other team by several thousands points; I'd say we're probably all above average, but there's got to be people at least as good as us, but I've rarely seen them.

That aside the Team match thing is a hugely needed feature. I think the game really just needs an option to be able to find a quick match if I'm only paired up with one or two other people though. I think a large reason why it sometimes takes a long ass time to get enough people in a lobby to start a game is because everybody else is doing the same thing, since you can't go into quick match with anyone else. Hopefully this team match will allow you to start/join games with any number of people, and not just four, but I don't get that impression :(

I'd assume they're talking about the PC one with that, and I don't think that really even happens in that one. In vs and campaign.

Do you have an amazing computer capable of hosting? When I tried hosting I had very little computer slowdown, but when zombies started appearing, I think they might have been glitchy, and everyone's ping jumped up to like 1000 ms (I have an 8 mbit connection and the pings were okay before that point).

Hm, well I only tried with one friend and I didn't have any slowdown. I'm willing to give a full 4 player game a shot but I doubt everything would run smoothly. I'll ask a friend if I can get admin access to one of his dedicated servers to run it that way.


EDIT: He says he'd have to charge me $5 monthly for admin access D: but he'd be willing to change the map for us whenever he's around (which is practically all day)

I love Left 4 Dead. I just wish I had more people to play with on the 360. although, it wouldn't surprise me if I was voted off of a group when playing. :lol :lol

You could swear some people had right click mapped to "Vote Kick". :lol (Or left trigger in your case.)

:o that would be neat. We tried to get DT vs yesterday but it wouldn't go.
 
Just Hosted an awesome Vs game of Dead Air with some gaffers. Went pretty well all things considered. Except for an awesome hack smoker pull. That was epic.
For me at least. Not so epic for Nabs

Because those are the only two campaigns that have been officially released for versus.
