Part of the reason I really just don't try keeping up anymore. I'm finding more joy in what people are able to do with older tracks a la re-edits, remixes and such. There's still new stuff out there, but I prefer that it finds me either through this thread or hearing it out... that's it.

No re-upload on that Robag mix, guys? :(

There's no download link for it, sorry pal. Wish I could help.

saw disclosure do the "live" set last night, it was fun but the whole live thing seemed really gimmicky and grandoise, why not just do a dj set

Would you guys be interested in some kind of mix exchange activity? I do it on another forum and it's pretty cool, you make a themed mix, remove all tags, and it gets sent to a random participant who will then do a review of the mix (not knowing who the songs are by). One problem though is how to upload the music, since I don't think I'm allowed to say "just upload it to mediafire!" on GAF, even though they would be distributed via PM only.

Also the new Natasha Kmeto record is sounding very nice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6PaVg6FomY

I'm on a roll as I made another new mix just now, and it's even darker than the previous one.

Uploaded it to my ''alter-ego'' souncloud due to time limitations.

Negruj - Donkere Krochten vol. 2

Yeah, it's another ''Donkey Crotch'' mix haha.
(it's Dutch for something like Dark Caverns)

Anyway, hope some people enjoy it again!

We tried this around Christmas and the mods shot us down. I'm always down for a mix exchange, but if we do it we have to do it off site so as to not anger the overlords.

Speaking of mixes... I'm finally ready to reveal what I've been working on. I'm starting my own blog (it will ultimately be at www.fruitpreservative.com , but I'm still finalizing some things so it's not there just yet), and will be doing a bi-weekly mix series for it. I'm going under the alias fruitpreservative and the idea is to highlight locally made and preserved "jams". Really corny and kitschy, but that's kind of the point. I'll be doing reviews on releases and parties, and will do artist and label spotlights. Pretty excited about it, and am really excited to share the first mix for it!

Definitely checking it out. So local = NYC, yes?

Yep, NYC. I'll be talking about things outside of NYC, but the idea behind it is to shine a spotlight on some of the smaller parties and labels that are starting to pop up. The house/techno scene in Brooklyn is exploding right now, so many new nights popping up at random little bars tucked away in weird areas, it's pretty exciting.

And thanks for the kind words, guys :3 Recorded that the morning after seeing Roman Fluegel last week. One take, off the cuff, no loops, and no effects (with the exception of two uses of the low-pass filter). Going back to the basics, no gimmicks just good music :)

Hah, no, I've never touched Ableton before. My brain can't wrap itself around that stuff. I use Traktor with a Reloop controller. Never use sync or nuffin, just play as if I were using a pair of CDJs and a mixer. I rent a room in a two bedroom apartment and share it with my boyfriend, to say space is limited would be an understatement. The first thing I'm doing when we move is getting a mixer and some tables, butta believe it!

Honestly I have 'only' listened 75% of the mix so far but I really liked it! I will listen to the rest later. I enjoyed the songs a lot and smooth mixing. If I may ask, how did you do the majority of transitions, what technique? I just started mixing myself a bit, and I'm still experimenting what gives the smoothest transitions.

I picked up another needle for my other deck and I have £70s worth of Eps in my chemical records basket.
I told myself I wouldnt start vinyl djing as well the costs are mad but damn if it isnt a thousand times more satisfying.

The difference really is night and day, much more fun to lay down wax than play CDs or MP3s. It's a shit ton of fun no matter what, so I'm perfectly content at the moment.

Dreaver, my technique is just what I've learned from watching other DJs play and figuring shit out on my own (completely self-taught.) You need to "learn" your music to make a smooth transition. Listen to the track your playing and see what is missing and plug that space in with the next track. This could be something like mixing in a melodic track into a monochrome techno track, or if the song in deck a has no claps mix in a track on deck b with claps on beats 2&4, things like that. The key is to really know the music you're playing, and learn to count the beats. When mixing in the next track, it's especially important to pay attention to your EQs. Turn the mid down on the track you're mixing in and slowly raise it at an opportune moment in the first track, such as during a breakdown. You want to introduce elements slowly so as to not make anything jarring or seem out of place. Just keep practicing and you'll start to understand. The best tool for me was to just make an hour long mix and listen to it repeatedly. If you fuck up during the recording, just keep going. You'll begin to notice what you did wrong and how to prevent it from happening again.

Oh yeah not saying its lesser or any of that, thats for sure.
I think Ive just been slowly brainwashed as my mates have vinyl setups at their houses and like Ill play a few tunes off a controller at a house party and its ok but theres a kinf of excitement in seeing what someone is going to pull out of the bag.

Im hoping I can force myself to learn to beat match by ear so I can take a few tunes I like in the future and join in.

nice write up. its a feel. beatmatching is only a fraction of the whole process. transitions are personal and will give you your own sound. every dj mixes differently. and stay away from any sync shit. it will make you sound like a robot and be uninteresting to listen to.

Man, I wish I got in at the vinyl level when I started, but shit was just too expensive compared to getting a Denon rack-mount (2500F) and all the music on the internet you could download. Still want to get into it, but I barely play the music I have on CDs now, I'd never get my money's worth of enjoyment out of them, even the cheapest of cheap stuff.

I do have a friend who apparently has a stack of 1200s that I'm sure are in working order... I should hit him up for at least one or two. Then I could jam on Serato vinyl and it'd be just like the real thing
bahahaha as if
. Seriously though, I still have ~20 or so vinyls I want to fuck around with which I bought mostly for sentimental/collectable reasons (some Beasties, LNTG, Ashford & Simpson amongst others) so I definitely need to jump on that particular wagon.

But there's something to be said about physical vs. virtual media, though. As much as I've played around with Serato (on CDJs) and USB/MIDI controllers, I just don't get the feedback from flicking through directory listings as I do when fingering through my stupidly massive CD wallet. The brainstorms and the "holy fucking shit, that'd be perfect!" moments just don't come. Can only imagine how much better it is with vinyl, but I can definitely see the difference b/w the USB stick and the CD. Guess I'm just gonna be one of those guys who prefers CDs to all (for the time being... until I start buying vinyl regularly ;) ).

PS. Great points by all the above guys. That's why I love being in a thread that's more inhabited by (potential) DJs than general EDM fans. Chances are that if you're in here, you're either a DJ by trade, bedroom rocker or seriously looking at getting into throwing mixes together.

Fuck, I should put a mix together, even if it's just with the shit I carry from ~7-8 years ago :/
