The "Official" Nintendo DS Launch Thread (NSF56k)

I just opend my DS and I didn't see the thumbstrap. Do I have to buy it separately?

Are you sure it's not in the box? I, too, thought at first I didn't get one until I checked out the box entirely...

Does anyone know of anywhere I can buy a DS for retail price? Does anyone have any left at a local store that they would be willing to send through the mail? I just sold my SP and need something to play my gba games on. I would be willing to send money through paypal.

I went to a Target yesterday; they had 16 in stock (near Baltimore). I wanted to buy all of them, but the manager said that there was a 2 per person limit. He let me get 4 though.

Can u pick one up for me and I can send you money via paypal for the system and shipping?

I'm not looking to resell this thing, I'm just looking for one for myself. Please help out a fellow GAFer

I played a demo unit at EBGames in the local mall when I was out shopping yesterday. To be blunt: I was not impressed. (For what it's worth, I own and enjoy a GBA SP.)

The stylus control for the Metroid demo was NOT like a mouse and keyboard -- sorry, but they are not the same thing. Pictochat seemed interesting, but who the hell is going to own one of these things that I want to chat with? (I'm guessing the installed base is not going to have a significant 30-year-old demographic.) The size of the unit is almost a dealbreaker for me, given that my main usage time for the GBA SP is when I'm on business travel. I can fit the SP, the charger, and a couple of games in less space that the DS unit itself would take up, and my computer bag is already pretty full of laptop accessories and papers as it is.

I'm sure it's cool technology and all that, but I see no compelling reason to upgrade anytime in the near future...maybe ever.

I'm enjoying the heck out of my DS....now for my wishlist

KONAMI you pricks! give me a new badass contra game with bosses that span 2 screens. Heck any konami shooter with bosses that span 2 screens :)

NIntendo all this crappy talk about inovation and i get one freagin ds game at launch, booo, you can do better. Where is my smash brothers with multi levels and online play? How about Pikmin portable? Starfox? ZELDA, or new game ip's.

Square - RPGS...aholes..

Capcom - give me 2d platformers with 3d effects.

Sega - give me more wacky tittles like Feel the magic, it seems like its the only thing you can do these days :( that and virtua fighter.

NO MORE FPS GAMES ON THE DS....they suck, unless it has lock-on i dont want to touch it.

thats it for now

Yeah I wish the Japanese companies, specficially Namco, Konami, and Capcom had more for launch, but that stuff will come.

The touchscreen is the real deal though. It does definitely add a new element to gaming and makes it accessible to everyone. I'm having a ton of fun alternating between Mario 64 adventure mode and the touchscreen minigames.

They're an awesome time burner.

unless your pants are xxxl i don't see how you can have extra room to spare with a ds in there. i guess is should have rephrased my gripe and said "does not fit comfortably in a pocket." because really, it's like having a first generation PDA in your pocket.

I can put the DS in my front pocket and still have enough room to pull the thing out with my hand. That equates to "enough room to spare". :P

Are you using a shoehorn to pull the thing in and out of your pants or something? :lol

You can't put the thing in your back pocket but you sure is hell can fit the thing in your front pocket. And I didn't even think that the DS was that much bigger than the original GBA. Its a lot heavier but I didn't think it was bigger.

Well the larger body size is just part of the deal. PSP is gonna be the same deal.

There's a limit to how physically small you can make such a unit.

Besides, it is winter, I would assume most that you likely would wear more than just pants and a t-shirt outside. DS fits easily into most coat pockets.

Expansion packs for ds games?
I was messing around with my Action Replay for GBA with the DS.
In the GBA slot it reads as "There is a DS option pak inserted"
Could this mean in the future we might get upgrades to old DS games kijnda
like Sonic and knuckles?

It's probably referring to the system used by Pokemon Dash and Emerald, and FTM and many Sega games. Basically when you insert certain GBA carts while playing certain DS games, it'll unlock new features, items, or levels.

So I decided to go for it, even though there weren't any launch titles that truly grabbed me. (I'm not a big Mario fan). Picked it up with Mario anyway. No real complaints about the control, I've been using the thumb strap, and while it does take a little bit of getting used to, I feel it works well.

But my main reaction is when I inserted a GBA game, what a revelation! Who knew how rich and beautiful these game could look. It's kinda like going from composite to component video. Colour me impressed.

God damn thread, I need my DS really bad now.

STUPID PARCEL FORCE!!! DELIVER MY DS!!!

Yeah. Mine was supposed to come today, but is stuck in a depot in Coventry until Monday :(

Got the DS two days ago, today I got a case (official), and Mario DS. I have only played the original mini games but so far Im impressed

So as some of you already know, I emailed NOA about the DS' lack of the sleep mode wake up feature.

Here's there response:

Thank you for your e-mail. We are excited to hear that you purchased your Nintendo DS and that you are loving it!

In regard to your question, while the Nintendo DS does feature a sleep mode, which is activated when closing the lid during play or PictoChat, players must manually take the Nintendo DS out of sleep mode by opening the lid. The function of having the system come out sleep mode when another Nintendo DS is nearby was not incorporated into North American Nintendo DS systems because the hardware developers at Nintendo Company, Limited (NCL) did not have time to add this feature to the final product. Please note that I have not heard of any plans to incorporate this feature into future production runs.

For more details on this as they are announced, or for more information on the DS and its games, please stay tuned to www.nintendods.com.

Sincerely,

Nintendo of America Inc.

Add later via firmware flash?

I tried the multiplayer mode in Mario 64 DS. It's fun but I noticed one thing, why do I need to download the game in my DS from the "host" when I already have the cartridge?

If it's gonna limit the capacity of mp games, then it's stupid because we all know that when you download games into other DS (or GBAs), you have less features than if you used a cart along with your friend :P

Only Mario does this. If you noticed with Metroid it doesn't require the same thing to play multiplayer. If everyone has the cart than no hassle.

supposedly we were getting more DS systems in at TRU today. not sure how many. but since we have none, any is good.

Either the I've been playing my DS too much or the battery life is shorter than expected because it just went red while I was playing. I think the last time I charged it was on Tuesday.

I never had this happen with the SP and I'd usually charge that like once per week.

People are saying that they're already getting scratches on their DSes.

wtf? I've been playing Mario rigorously every damn day, and I don't notice a damn scratch. ok, I hold it up to the light, I see marks, but those are stains from the stylus. a little spray of the screen, and drying off, and it looks brand new.

You people sure these are scratches?

142 stars on Mario plus 1 Feel the Magic run though and not a scratch to be seen. Of course I use the stylus/thunb strap and not kitchen knives.

I haven't noticed any scratches on my unit, and I've played the shit out of Mario. Already up to a 140 Stars, and played extensive multiplayer. So it's most likely the kitchen knife.

damn, look at this one

Is this old?

WTF? Do the NA DS' do not alert you when other DS' are near? Fuck that, I am importing one.

I thought most of the launch games were already creeping up in retailers in Japan? Didn't we see a pic of Azobit selling the DS units with all of the games? Or was I dreaming?

The DS has an upgradeable firmware/bios, so i'm pretty sure this feature will come through an update eventually.

Someone should be working on this already, I'd like a modified No-Seizure-warning startup, plz.

I randomly found someone in Metroid today while waiting for my wife to finish Christmas shopping out at the Mall of America.

I searched for hosted games and someone that had named themselves "Justin" was waiting for people. I hopped in, and he started up. I ended up killing him twice, and he quit. Looked around and couldn't see anyone else holding a DS, but I was in a pretty open area.

Quit after two kills. Just like the internet!

Does anyone else find this disturbing?

The Justin guy, just waiting there.

It's a pretty big mall. Now that I think about it, I was pretty close to a Gamestop, it could have just been the Demo station inside the store. But still, the chances that someone would be sitting in wait mode on a demo station is pretty low... and odd.

The fact the guy's name was Justin is even more creepy. See; Justin Bailey.

So many updatable options, if You've heard the 'Alarm Clock' on your DS you know that a 'warning signal' can get really damn loud... enough to hear it in your pocket or backpack.

Is there any word that this Firmware could be updated like at a demo kiosk? Or say on a new demo cartridge, or future game that updates the system automatically? Or even through linking up with people ... If so EVERYONE's new DS could be updated very quickly...

or is it say.. a mail it back into Nintendo for an upgrade?

I'm guessing key software could have it built into the card. It might check to see if your system is updated or not and then take the proper steps.

That stinks! I already have a NA DS, and I don't want to buy a Japanese one just for that. Bummer...

If the NA one doesn't have it, the JP one likely doesn't either. Their release dates are only what, 12 days apart? I doubt anything is different aside from packaging and such.

Nice news on Metroid Hunters, I'm sure that'll really brighten the day for Metroid fans. :P Ugh, now I actually have a reason to pick up this game. :( Hopefully we'll hear more about where it falls in the timeline and such soon though, and how much of the game is really focused ont he story.

I still don't get Nintendo's recent interest in multiplayer Metroid though.

Crow's on the house.

There wont be a Metroid SP game. You ever play UT? Remember the SP in that game? That is all you are getting here.

We are talking about Metroid Prime Hunters. It's an arena based tournament game like UT.
