I'm going to bring the machine to my new place (currently working on getting everything updated at the seller's shop where we have tools and the like). Anything I'm missing here in terms of just putting the machine into my game room for play (this being my first machine and all):
-Casters to set it on
-Updated code
-Set to free play :p
-Novus No. 1 & 2 and old shirts for playfield cleaning

Feel like I'm missing something obvious because it seems too easy. :p

Too easy you say!?, come back In about 5-8 weeks when stuff starts to need maintenance etc

Playboy and Family Guy are two licenses that I can think of off of the top of my head.

If I had to wager for this year's Halloween table, I'd go with Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, because the film it's based on appears to be covered by the same license that resulted in Dracula and Starship Troopers being added into TPA. That, and it looks fun.

These tables are not great and do they really warrant A separate game?, I really don't think so...you could also add South Park to the list also I guess but again not a great table.

Frankenstein is also not a great table with god awful repetitive sound clips, just watch a YT video on it, but I guess we could see that along with another table to complete the Halloween 2 table cycle they have done for the last 2 years. There's going to be a possibility of 4 tables which could be this years Halloween pack so pick 2 of them and the 2 left will be 2016's Halloween tables.....

Casters as in casters? I wouldn't be using those, you don't want to slide the thing around when trying to nudge the thing :)

After it's setup, you'll want to tinker with the tilt bob so it's balanced and even, too... you don't want it too sensitive when nudging one way and not sensitive enough the other way. And probably want some kind of analogue leveler as well, something like this.

  • Get some new pinballs. I prefer the Pinball Life premium ultra gloss or whatever they're called. Get the crappy factory Stern balls out, though.
  • Go to the hardware store and get some furniture sliders. The round ones that are like 3" I'm diameter or so. It will make moving your pin around a cinch (which is huge when you have to get inside her).
  • I'm assuming you're talking the leg leveling caster bolts, haha. Get a level, a friend, and get to work. 6.5 is a good pitch to start at. You can always go more. Don't rely on the bubble in the game, either.
  • Remember to check side to side level, too.
  • A light Novus 1 wipe and waxing will be worth your time right off. Check Pinside for wax options. I forget what I have, but it's some automotive stuff I found at Target and it's awesome.
  • If you have any protectors already purchased, resist the urge to play immediately and install them first. Or just install them as you get them. But don't let them simmer on the sidelines...It's worth protecting your investment at the onset.
Other than that, enjoy! You're going to need tools and stuff as time goes on, but let that happen over time. Also remember to clean your game every week or two of good play. It takes 5 minutes but keeps your game in glorious condition.

Word of warning about MET Premium - you may have issues with the hammer. Don't let that get you down. It's pinball, so it will happen. Remember to take a step back and research your issue, and DON'T be afraid to ask questions on pinside.

Final thing!

Tradition is that the wife gets the first play. ;)

E: I just re-read your post. Don't use Novus 2 unless you absolutely have to. It's got fine particles in it that are designed to eat up grime. If there's nothing on your playfield or ramps that need it, you're only scratching away the playfield coating. It's an abrasive cleaner.

Any reason I would need Jack Bot if I already have Pinbot an TBOP? Seems just like a remake with a DMD. Last months Cyclone was just too similar to other Williams Tables I already owned but with less features. This season was starting out good and now 2 dull repeat tables I don't want to buy.

It plays similar to Pinbot, but it's still fun and different. Worth it if you like other S4 stuff and are contemplating the Season pass.

It uses the same play field shape but thats it.

The theme is a scifi casino and its alot of fun , the chest lights being used for keno works great. Great risk vs reward to all the double or nothing shots for games. I really enjoy the casino run game. Multiball jackpots stack towards mega visor(which i've gotten within 2 of but thats it)
If you like more of a themed story, with goals that are shots you need to make in time limits to be rewarded its really a great game.
I dont' really love pinbot I kinda found it bland I'm surprised how much more fun I'm having, low expectations maybe.
Well and it looks fantastic in the dx11 beta.

Does TPA support 120htz? I just finished playing in portrait and dx 11 and I'm already starting to think about pc upgrades like a 120/240htz monitor and beefier gpu for higher res. Never mind witcher 3 and gta5. Ordinarily anything past 60fps makes me motion sick but I think TPA would really benefit from way higher fps. Does anyone play at super high res and fps? Is it as glorious as I imagine?

the beta has issue with the simulation not being independent to the monitor refresh so if you can't use a utility to lock it to 60hz everything will run to fast.
I'm sure they'll get to addressing it during later phase of the beta

Heh, I did send a friend request to Mark Ritchie, but he hasn't accepted yet. Oh well, dem's the breaks.
I'm friends with Steve Ritchie on FB :)

If you have an iPhone or an iPad, you can use PinGuy leveling app. It talks out loud and tells you what side is too high/too low, front to back level, etc. It's pretty great.
It's good, but I have a weird thing with mine where 6.5 degrees in the middle of the playfield does not equate to 6.5 degrees below the flippers (or towards the top of the playfield). It's weird. But that's not just with that app, it's everywhere.
But as a rule, I like machines setup as steep as possible. A fast game is a good game IMO.

And echoing nicoga on the Novus issue, I'd stay FAR away from Novus 2 on such a new machine like Metallica. If you were in Australia, I'd strongly recommend Mr. Sheen, but given you're not... I'm not sure what the equivalent is in the US :( It's pretty much universally known amongst operators and pinheads here as the only thing needed to make a playfield cleaner and play faster without being abrasive.

I was kinda the same with Cyclone, didn't really like it much at all. And I think it doesn't help that both Cyclone and Pinbot/Jackbot are both Barry Oursler designs. Having said that, I think Jackbot is enough of an upgrade to warrant buying/playing it (you should still be able to trial the table on your chosen platform). I would never own one IRL (played it, just didn't grab me in the slightest) but virtually, it's good enough to own IMO.

God damn, reading this thread, I have such a goddamn itch for a new machine! Saving for a house deposit sucks. At least once I find a place and move in, I have that friend who can lend me a machine or two. And if I scrounge around and grab an extra $1k down the line, I'll be able to grab a Zaccaria Robot :D

Edit:
How about dx9? Does that support frame rates higher than 60?
I have a feeling it doesn't. I don't think it's just a beta thing, but I could be wrong.

i just realized the cheat button is second right flipper ..but I keep forgetting to pound on it during the games to try and cheat.

I know the ingame rules summary mentions MK3 tips and says something about getting a freeball if you do it

It's been said the 60fps hardlimit is hooked into the game/physics engine.
As far as I noticed, it's like SNES days: when the framerate goes down, so does the gamespeed. The two are interwoven.
That enables a always consistent physics experience but in return a framerate dependant game speed.

I'm using an Xbox One gamepad, and it's configured so that the alternate functions are on the bumper buttons, so that I press the bumpers to activate the magna-save in Black Knight and the like. The cheat button in JackBot is the right bumper, and rapidly pounding on it when the indicator flashes works as intended. It doesn't work during attract mode, though, so I can't read the dedication to Joe Joos Jr. when it prompts me. Has it worked for anyone else?

Even though I can't run DX11 on my notebook, I can't wait to see footage of High Speed II running through DX11. I need to see that siren and supercharger in action.

Don't get excited about the siren in Getaway. They don't have it for High Speed, why would they have it for HS2?

If they did, then I'd be demanding a port of F-14 Tomcat with the full light show.

Had 2 friends over to unbox and play her tonight. I gotta say, MET is an amazing pin. The rules are great, sure...But most importantly, the shots all feel so damn good. It flows so good. And the in line drops? *love*

Has anyone been keeping up with the Pinball FX tables? I think the new Star Wars table is out this week. The original tables they released last month were great, the cowboy themed one was particularly good. Been playing a bunch of the Star Wars tables lately with all the hype for the new movies too.
Haven't put too much time into Jack Bot yet but I enjoy it more the Pinbot and Bride of Pinbot.
That looks awesome!

Man, I put about 30 games of MET in between last night and this morning. Had one game where I finally broke 35m and got onto my scoreboard. It's really fun finally being able to understand the rules. There's a LOT going on, though.

As for the FX tables...They're fun for me, but I seldom boot that game up and play them. Some tables feel OK, but they generally feel so "fake" in the way they play out. The ball acts like it either weighs a million pounds or weighs nothing. Fun to play, but just odd feeling at times.

Got to preview the new table for Pinball FX2 - Star Wars Rebels.

Here's the video and my high score run for the overall leaderboards: https://youtu.be/dnkr3ZnfBkk

Also, Zen will be announcing today their new partnership. New table announcement likely to come next week.

Whats your thoughts on the avengers ultron table?

I bought it and I feel like I'm missing something... I hope rebels catches me better

Rebels caught me a WHOLE lot better than Avengers did. But I can say I like the Ultron table more than I like the first Avengers table.

That's why I'm not a big rap for deep rules. I'd rather just hit the ball and have a basic idea of what's happening rather than having to contemplate what I have to do 10 steps ahead. When I get good enough with my aiming to hit specific things 90%+ of the time, maybe I'll appreciate them more, but an extra few levels of rules in a game just creates more anxiety for me, even in non-comp settings :(

Zen just tweeted this:

It'll just be something basic like Steambox support, I'd think.

To be honest, the game caters SO well to both heavy rules players and casual/surface players. You can do the basic stuff (shoot Sparky, graves, captive ball, snake, ramps) and still get a great score and have a blast. But, if you're looking to get deep into the game, you can start doing things like shooting a ramp to light it for "completion", followed by shooting Sparky/snake/grave for progress. Doing that can light hurry ups for big points. Oh man, I can just go on and on and on about the rules and how great they are.

I had a moment earlier where I was in Electric Chair multiball, got the add-a-ball (which gives you 20 seconds of 2x scoring), and then I hit the Piston shot for another 2x scoring...4x scoring during a multiball. Ended up having a 67m multiball. SO GOOD. What's awesome is that I knew exactly how and why I did it. Made it to my first Crank It Up, too! Which, as it stands, is a set of 4 "mini wizard" modes that all play so different and awesome.

100% one of my favorite games I've ever played. It has a very similar feeling to Spider-Man. Amazing stacking rules, but easy enough for the casual player to get stuff happening. If you haven't played a MET or watched Bowen's video on the rules, you really should.

It isn't (well, it could be in combination with, perhaps). It's tables based on Valve IP. The first one will be announced next week, but I pretty much gave it away a post or so above.
Ahh, gotcha. I think it's a reference that went over my head, it's been a while since I've played any Valve-published title. But if I had to guess, I'd say TF2 is probably their most recognisable IP (in terms of characters etc.

I'm always for tables where the theme is the table is out to kill you, and is self-aware and picking on your inadequacies and mortality the whole time. That's what it will be like right? Hope so! Through in traps and portals and of course, cake. Or not. But it could be a really fun theme.

Got an Alpha and hooked it up to my Samsung LCD. Getting terrible input lag though, makes pinball practically unplayable. How does one normally address stuff like that?

Alienware Alpha, a i3 based PC that I've connected to my TV as a Steam box. When connected to a monitor it works great, but I'm seeing lots of lag (controls feel very sluggish) when connected to the TV. I guess it is video lag since the input hasn't changed -- using a 360 controller both when it was connected to a monitor and to a TV.

Not actually that important

Have you put your tv in Game Mode? Check the manual/online how to do it with your model if you haven't yet.

Glad to see that you are enjoying Metallica. Have you had to do much tweaking so far?

Nope, none. Game plays incredible out of the box. I had to tighten a two screws that were slightly loose. No issues, no hassles, no nothing. I am literally blown away at how fun this game is. My very limited time on it prior to buying one was not enough to REALLY gauge the lastability of it. But I went with it on a hunch and am quite happy.

Honeymoon period, blah blah blah. But the layers that this game presents are incredible. I now understand why Lyman is so highly regarding as a programmer and rules man. He really did something special with Metallica. I'd honestly put the game behind LOTR as my favorite pinball machine ever (I'd say MET is tied with SM as they both offer similar styles of gameplay, but one is about $600-1000 cheaper than the other, haha).

What's fascinating is that I truly think ANY pinball fan can enjoy the game if they take a step back and appreciate what's there. You can literally make progress by shooting ANYTHING on the playfield. But the more adept pinball players will be able to really elevate their skills by taking a more systematic approach to things. When I started 2x add-a-ball scoring and brought in Fuel 2x scoring for the 4x scoring yesterday, it was this super blissful moment of "I don't suck at pinball!" that sucked me into the game. It was zen like. But in that same regard, I enjoy starting Sparky Multiball and just working towards that elusive 7th super jackpot.

It's just something really special in terms of pinball tables. The art is honestly mind blowingly cool. Like, it's nothing like I've seen before. Dirty Donnie knocked it WAY out of the park. Sparky is such a cool bash toy, and the inline drop targets are SOOO awesome.

To keep it on topic with Pinball Arcade...

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a good example of how stacking can work in MET. You can flail and enjoy that game, but it REALLY rewards well executed plays with stacking and bringing things in.

A lot of folks have compared Metallica to Monster Bash. I'm going to play some MB to see how it feels in comparison. The analogy is related to how every shot serves a very specific purpose. MET definitely has that going on...Every single shot does SOMETHING very specific. Understanding that layer of the game is what separates the novices from the pinheads.

The one thing I think that REALLY makes this game shine for novices is that the "hardest shot" in the game (I would argue that it's the Piston shot) serves no purpose for progression at all. To my knowledge, it only serves as a way to increase scoring. As such, you can ignore it completely and still have fun. On the contrary, Stern's Star Trek is an amazing game, but you are required to hit one of two very difficult shots repeatedly to start new modes. My wife HATED that. It's sort of like Ripley's in that the mode start shot is super easy to hit and allows you to see some progression by hitting that shot and flailing the ball around.

In summary!

Yeah, MET is incredible and plays great out of the box. Time to play some Monster Bash to compare. :)

Not much going on in the Pinball front. I like the new WrestleMania code but right now it's 14/16 in terms of money brought in at the 1up so I don't think it's going to last : (

I got a Dirty Harry for a good price. It plays very well - The cabinet is a bit rough but it's in my house not a location so who cares. When I got it the left ramp diverter was stuck all the time. Now it's moving some but not all the time. I don't think it's a switch issue so I need to check the part itself. Otherwise, I like it.

So right now I have a TZ, World Poker Tour, Bally Eight ball, Dirty Harry and a Johnny Mnemonic. I got Johnny a long time ago and honestly I don't think I like it so I may see if I can move it.

In three weeks thought, the Lyons Spring Classic is going to happen. Last year they turned it into a PAPA circuit event so it's going to be huge. It's hard enough to play there but now all the national and some international players come to take the glory from us locals. I've always qualified very well and then lost in the first round so I hope I can move up this year. I'll try to post some pics or video when it happens.

I've need to get some daily practice in for this Tourney. I've been playing angry lately because I'm playing like crap with some really stupid ball handling errors and drops : (

Nicoga:

I wasn't sure about MET at first but I've come around on it. It's got way more depth in the code than I thought. When I had someone sit down and explain how to get Crank It Up mode It blew my mind. I had to hear the explanation 3-4 times before I understood how the game works. Of course now it's changed my strat and I'm get much worse scores because I'm trying to build to a big payoff and screwing it up. When I did it thought... holy crap. I got 60-70 million in about 5 minutes in Ride the Lightning by getting a huge combo going.

New beta build out last night
Version 1.37.9
- Forced 60fps on DX11
- Fixed ball visiblity when on top of HH glass
- Added more resolutions to configuration utility
- Fixed UI in resolutions lower than 1080
- Added option in the config utility to brigthen the ball, default is off.
- Fixed messed up lamps on Dr Dude
- Fixed draw order on Medieval Madness pop bumpers
- Fixed ball shadows
- Art and tuning tweaks on JackBot (DX9 and DX11)

the brighter ball really helps visibility on dark tables..I'm still hopefully the engine guy will tweak it so highlights show better but for now having the ball have a minimum brightness seems to really help

This one has a long loadtime bug due to locking at 60 but Mike says will be fixed in next build

That's why I think MET is easily my #2 game right now. The risk vs reward is ridiculous. It's one of the few games I've ever played where you are encouraged to progress through the modes and features instead of abusing something like Davy Jones multiball on POTC or Doc Ock on SM or loop combos on Shadow. There are so many ways to score big on MET. Hell, I posted earlier how I had a 67m Electric Chair multiball from cashing a super jackpot with 4x scoring on (that I actually did intentionally!).

And yes, the game has layers upon layers upon layers. I have read all the rules and watched videos and I think I finally understand 90% of what's going on. CIU modes are still a bit of a blur, End of the Line mode is unreachable for now, and a FEW little insert and rule anomalies evade me. But for the most part, it's got way more going on than meets the eye, and having a grasp of the system in place gives MET a really huge ranking in my book.

Also, I had no idea you own so many games. Sounds like you've got some winners in there, too!

FWIW, in the TOPcast with Clay and Lyman, Lyman mentions that Monster Bash is much more his game than Gomez', and I feel that Metallica is much more his than Borg's. So I think that's where you'll see the similarities.

I'm still standing where I am on rule depth versus playability and such. I think I prefer machines where experience and knowledge of rules of a game isn't the main factor in whether you can get a good score or not. For example, I've played maybe 50 games total of MET on the game since the CIU was implemented, and I hate that there's no way I can get a score anywhere near as good as someone who knows the depth of the rules purely because they have more experience than I do. It's not my fault I live in a pinball-barren region :( Much prefer it that I can play a game of High Speed against someone who's never played it before and we're both on relatively equal footing... or that it comes down to skill and nothing else.

Like I said in my email to Nate on C2C last episode, I'd love to see a more arcade-friendly basic ruleset that has more of a focus on skill, and another for home use that is balls-deep in depth for people wanting their $6k worth.
