Glad to see that you are enjoying Metallica. Have you had to do much tweaking so far?
Nope, none. Game plays incredible out of the box. I had to tighten a two screws that were slightly loose. No issues, no hassles, no nothing. I am literally blown away at how fun this game is. My very limited time on it prior to buying one was not enough to REALLY gauge the lastability of it. But I went with it on a hunch and am quite happy.
Honeymoon period, blah blah blah. But the layers that this game presents are incredible. I now understand why Lyman is so highly regarding as a programmer and rules man. He really did something special with Metallica. I'd honestly put the game behind LOTR as my favorite pinball machine ever (I'd say MET is tied with SM as they both offer similar styles of gameplay, but one is about $600-1000 cheaper than the other, haha).
What's fascinating is that I truly think ANY pinball fan can enjoy the game if they take a step back and appreciate what's there. You can literally make progress by shooting ANYTHING on the playfield. But the more adept pinball players will be able to really elevate their skills by taking a more systematic approach to things. When I started 2x add-a-ball scoring and brought in Fuel 2x scoring for the 4x scoring yesterday, it was this super blissful moment of "I don't suck at pinball!" that sucked me into the game. It was zen like. But in that same regard, I enjoy starting Sparky Multiball and just working towards that elusive 7th super jackpot.
It's just something really special in terms of pinball tables. The art is honestly mind blowingly cool. Like, it's nothing like I've seen before. Dirty Donnie knocked it WAY out of the park. Sparky is such a cool bash toy, and the inline drop targets are SOOO awesome.
To keep it on topic with Pinball Arcade...
Bram Stoker's Dracula is a good example of how stacking can work in MET. You can flail and enjoy that game, but it REALLY rewards well executed plays with stacking and bringing things in.
A lot of folks have compared Metallica to Monster Bash. I'm going to play some MB to see how it feels in comparison. The analogy is related to how every shot serves a very specific purpose. MET definitely has that going on...Every single shot does SOMETHING very specific. Understanding that layer of the game is what separates the novices from the pinheads.
The one thing I think that REALLY makes this game shine for novices is that the "hardest shot" in the game (I would argue that it's the Piston shot) serves no purpose for progression at all. To my knowledge, it only serves as a way to increase scoring. As such, you can ignore it completely and still have fun. On the contrary, Stern's Star Trek is an amazing game, but you are required to hit one of two very difficult shots repeatedly to start new modes. My wife HATED that. It's sort of like Ripley's in that the mode start shot is super easy to hit and allows you to see some progression by hitting that shot and flailing the ball around.
In summary!
Yeah, MET is incredible and plays great out of the box. Time to play some Monster Bash to compare.
