The Pinball Arcade |OT| play them all from Soho to Brighton

Just got this back from support:

Hi there! :)

The sound is actually an issue we were aware of. No idea how it made it into the retail version as our testing never had the issue, but somehow it seems that it's pulling from mobile sound files instead of the sound files that the PS4 version should be using. We're working on getting a fix out as soon as possible.

--------

Thank you,
Pinball Arcade Support

So I guess I am happy that they at least are acknowledging the mistake. Hope to see it patched soon. Hilarious that it is using mobile sound.

That begs the question - why are the sound files such shit on mobile devices? It's not like those aren't capable of reasonable quality audio.

At least they are aware of it and will fix it, that's about the best you can hope for with FarSight.

Not sure, file size can't be that much larger for audio I don't think, maybe a few hundred megs tops... Console/PC version is 2GB+ though, while mobile is only around 800MBs, but that's more textures I'd guess.

I've never been a huge pinball fan, but gave this a shot on the PS4 and bought all of the Season 1 tables. I've really enjoyed the Medieval game so far (where you have to beat King Payne or whatever). I have no idea how I'd ever actually "beat" the table cause it seems so impossible, but it's still fun.

What are the best tables in Season 1?

Well that's good. Sounds like most of the major day 1 gripes are being addressed.
Any word on rumble?

It's the best version of the game, so cut them some slack. They must have worked hard to make it so upgraded on all of the tables. Seriously just compare how it looks like on iOS compared to what you get to see on PS4.

This game is both awesome and a comedy of errors at the same time.

This is actually a relatively smooth launch for them. People have suffered way worse than a price hiccup or a couple things needing patches... try a half dozen delays or months with no updates only to find out there will never be any more updates, and that's just getting started. You can write a book that would have made Robert Jordan or George R. R. Martin proud about all the things FarSight gets wrong. But at the end of the day, they're still just about the only player in town for real pinball simulation (unless you want to go Visual Pinball or Future Pinball, and you're only kidding yourself if you think the average community created table is better off), and they do sometimes get things right eventually.

Alright, you guys are right, I'll cut them some slack. Three dollars isn't really a big deal and I really want to like the game.

So should I just pickup the retail copy or go all in on PSN?

I can't speak for others, but for arcade style games I have no intention of trading in, I prefer digital for convenience. It's gonna have a bunch of patches anyway.

Keep in mind all the tables have a comprehensive instruction set that goes over how to play all the tables and activate the various modes... sometimes they're 300+ pages long of tips lol.

Do the packs ever have cheaper specials on steam?

I have to update the OP, season 2 is down to $30 now, from $40, and I still have to add in Fish Tales... soon. But it has only been on Steam for around a month, so asking if they "ever" have specials is a bit premature. It would make sense to hold out for the winter/holiday sale though, over the next few weeks. If it's ever going to go on sale, that's as good a time as you'll see anytime soon. Season 1 & 2 that is, I doubt the just-released Season 3 will be marked down for at least a good half year or more.

Theatre of Magic(my favorite table) has frame drops in it. It gets kind of annoying.

Another thing I've come to realize is how crappy the ST: TNG table is. The best strategy is to hold your ball during the missions because the outlanes are so rough. It used to be one of my favorite tables but not anymore sadly.

So I ended up picking up the S1 Pro pack on PS4 despite the issues. Will get the seasons on PS4 and then double dip on them on PC during sales.

Now, I hadn't played The Pinball Arcade since around Table Pack 4 or 5 on PS3 when they just introduced Pro tables. I was assuming when paying $10 more for the Pro version of the season I'd have pro versions of the tables. People here said for one thing, Elvira is censored without the operators menu.

...but only 6 tables have pro versions of the 20ish? And Elvira doesn't even have a pro menu? Is that right? Seems like I should've gone standard for this season at least and saved $10.

Also if Season 1 is ~20 tables for $40, and Season 2 is ~20 tables for $40, why the hell is Season 3 ~10 tables for $40? Seems...weird and bs.

And playing this all night on my PS4 broke my dual shock 4. Clicking the L1/R1's so much has gotten my R1 sticky. Still works, but have a feeling it's going to get stuck soon at this rate and been unusable. Since it's only like 33 days since launch I wonder if it's covered under any sort of warranty. Will ask in the PS4 thread. But yeah ;_; Luckily I have 2 controllers and hardly ever play co-op with anyone so I'll just use the other one for now!

Can't wait until they patch the sound and vibration.

Yeah, PS4 version. Sorry I should have specified.

I should also clarify while the frame drops are annoying the table is still very playable.

With the base ball? I noticed in ToTAN when I tried some of the other balls the frame rate would drop. So I went back to the base ball.

Just did Theater of Magic and didn't notice anything obvious drops fwiw.

It happens when the ball is at the south end of the table. I'm not sure why it's doing it but if I can notice it I'm sure others will. It doesn't happen all the time though.

It puzzle's me why this game has any frame drops at all but this is Farsight.

alittle disappointed with the graphics of the PS4 version... well it looks nice, but the way they were talking about it i was expecting a next gen feel...like what Real Pool supposedly look like. Maybe I have to use the closer view.

but playing the Star Trek machine brought back so much memories I didn't care anymore. (I play with the HUD on because of this)

I'll be honest, I didn't know this is what these pinball games were about.....recreating those old machines as close as possible. I thought they were just creating new versions.

It's really a matter of taste. A lot of people love the mid-late 90s games like Twilight Zone, Medieval Madness, Star Trek, while I personally prefer the 80s tables such as Taxi, Gorgar and Elvira and the Party Monsters.
Yeah. Some people have good taste, other people don't.

You do.

Centaur was S2, wasn't it? :( I bet that looks dope on PS4.

Downloaded the PS4 demo last night and promptly deleted it. If the PS4 version is supposed to look better I can't see it. Think I'll just stick with the PS3 version.

Yeah, Centaur, Firepower, Whirlwind and Flight 2000 are all season 2, and among my personal favorites.
People keep talking about ROM emulation for Black Knight, but how good is it gonna be when they have emulation down for Firepower and they can move away from scripts? Ungh.

PS. If you haven't, I highly recommend you play a FP in person. It's pretty brutal but that sound that keeps ramping up just gets to you. Hard to retain composure with that going on (just like BK).

PPS. Guys, do I go pro on the PC S3 pack? I have a feeling this will be the best season per table count thus far so it may be worth my while... but how many pro tables will there be? All of them? There's at least one per double pack in previous seasons...

FP was the first table I ever played in person. They had one down the street from where I grew up.

Played a bunch of the PS4 version tonight and then a bunch of ToTAN on Steam and honestly even though I started the series on PS3 and the PS4 is a good upgrade, I like the Steam version the best and I'll double dip and pick up S1 on there (hopefully a slight sale starting tomorrow in the winter Steam sale?).

For some reason the game just feels better. Whether it's because there's some slight frame drops, or the lack of vibration feedback, or some minor lag when an HDTV is involved. I dunno. Just feels smoother and more enjoyable for me.

And visually I just really prefer the PC version because even though PS4 has 3 lighting modes...I don't really "love" any of them. They almost all do some good things and some bad things. Bright is great for seeing everything and being full of color, but it also seems too high contrast and over-saturated and it just looks kind of garish like those HDTVs in stores with everything maxed out. Normal is ok but the contrast and colors actually seem a little dull. I think the Steam version looks like a halfway between Normal & Bright. Basically just right. The "Dark" setting is really neat...on some tables. On a lot of the tables it's interesting but doesn't really add much like TOTAN or Elvira. But I really liked "Dark" on Black Hole. So basically on the tables where Dark mode is great I prefer how the PS4 version looks, but on tables where it doesn't and I'm going to play in the daylight, I prefer how the Steam version looks over the Normal & Bright modes (this is with post-processing disabled on Steam because that just makes it looks worse like the Bright mode on PS4; but I've only tried ToTAN on Steam so maybe some tables look good with PC post-processing like how some look good Dark)

And then there's the sound issue.

But I'm kind of glad I bought S1 on PS4 even if I buy it again on PC this sale and use PC as the main. That way I can enjoy the Dark tables and see how the PS4 version grows and improves over patches and if it ever becomes a version I'll prefer to main. Same with the PC version patches and things like if the PC version gets the Dark mode settings patched in later.

And then, one of the biggest draws, is going to be if either version gets a friends filter on their leadboards, because for me, the biggest draw of continually playing the tables after getting the standard and wizard goals is to beat my friends' best scores and move up my friend leaderboard. But since I can't do that and either PC nor PS4 right now I'm a little ticked off  I know I can register on their site and do something, but since none of my friends are doing that too...there's not much point.

Anyhow, having only following the game through Table Pack 4, I'm overwhelmed by the amount of new tables in Season 1. Add in Season 2 and I'm set for a loooong while with Pinball! By then Season 3 and 4 might be finished :)

The sticky shoulders on DS4 are really really easy to fix... there's a video tutorial somewhere.

Thanks, will look into it.

First time I played it was the first machine I ever played inside someone's house. The actual first machine I ever played was... um, I dunno. First one I remember putting some serious coin into was MM, but I have somewhat clear memories of Road Show, Demo Man, Twilight Zone and Johnny Mnemonic. That was before I was into pins though, so I never really gave myself the chance to appreciate them.

We'd better see some goddamn older pins this season. Too many DMDs and not enough earlier 80s/System 4+ stuff. Sucks that this season they're going single tables only, because it almost inevitably means they'll be going with DMD titles for the appearance of more value (with the odd exception, like BK2K obviously).

I think if we get a S4, we'll see Flash in it. I couldn't see that coming in S3 (doesn't have the depth) but I think it's popular and important enough that we'll get it sooner or later.

I also want Varkon, but I'm not holding my breath:

Well Season 1 and Season 2 use a lot of tables from The Williams Collection, and they said bringing those tables over was less work than a new one. They also I think wanted to have a solid selection of tables out for new users in the first two seasons, and now that they have that they can focus on making 1 table a month and making the product better over all the platforms hopefully. They also have less staff working on the product than before I read, as they can't survive on just TPA alone.

As for the pro versions, I'd expect this season to have 10 pro versions, they've generally done 1 pro table per month since they started doing them, and now that they are only releasing 1 table a month, seems like they should all get pro versions. Season 1 has less pro tables possibly because the pro table didn't exist until some point during Season 1, not from the start.

Brief side note: Anyone know why TPA on my PC would only be using a single CPU core while playing? It's using 100% of core 0, but the others use bugger all. Of course, this means I get juddery slowdown/tearing, even though it's reporting as being a flat 60fps.

I suspect it's GPU driver related, but have no clue how to narrow it down :(

A while back they posted (a dev) on PAF the game only uses a single core, though that may have changed with the PS4 version, so that it is using a single core is not odd.

Try switching around the options (there's texture filtering/AA/post-processiong/resolution) to see if anything has an effect on it. If nothing does, then I'd suspect GPU drivers. Runs at minimal CPU usage for me with not an ounce of judder/slowdown.

Would be nice if they didn't force me to use the bumpers on the DS4. I'm getting a sticky bumper - I found a "fix" but it's not going to be permanent. I'd rather just use the face buttons.

They announced flipper remapping for PS4 will be coming in the 2nd patch. Not sure what's in the 1st patch, must just be some really urgent hotfixes (actually one of the things is the lighting settings will be saved per table).

Dead quiet from SCEE and Farsight regarding people not being able to buy season 1 bundle...

Yeah, a full day later you would think they'd have fixed this by now.
Really want to play the other tables, but I'm not paying more than double for nothing when it might be changed in an hour. :-/

Since Im internetless untill Saturday I have aquick question. On my PS3 I had to force the game to 720p to prevent a wierd type of video lag. Due to that I played most on the Vita. Are there reports of any issues with lag on the ps4 version?

Not at all. I'm very susceptible to input lag and thus I prefer to play on a good plasma set.
The PS3 version certainly does have input lag, but the PS4 version had perfect respond time. :)
There was one person on the PAF forum that was talking about having input lag, but that was due to his TV being rather crap in the end.

How many people actually work at Farsight? For all the platforms they support I still don't get the impression that their headcount can manage more than one high priority task at a time.
