The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Good to know I'm not the only one.

Not that Start and Select made sense, but these make even less sense and then when they try to show it as icons in game "press [gray thing] to see map" it's even more confusing. I blame the HD era, the distance between my couch and the TV, and old age.

Also this is hardly an XBO-only problem. Touchpad and Options on PS4 are used in similarly confusing ways but at least not by the core OS so it's slightly better.

I think the hamburger button is ubiquitous enough online that people get it, more or less. The view button seems kind of inscrutable.

Where did you get that theme from anyway? I didn't see it posted to your forums.

e: the one by Chris Rios reminds me of one of the pokemon town themes... https://soundcloud.com/playeronepodcast/charles-rios-p1p-intro

I wrote the material at a piano back in 2006-2007 when I was in undergrad taking composition lessons. It basically sat inside my sheet music notebook as scribbles on a page for the past 7 years or so as an idea I never used for anything, but really liked how it sounded. It almost became a choral piece, string quartet, and a french horn quartet once too, but ultimately came out to be what you hear it as today all these years later (because I could never really develop my original idea into a piece longer than the original two phrases)!

(links contain the "target render" versions of audio I brought into those lessons of mine for the different mediums I was trying out).

While the genre for each of these attempts sound different, a trained ear will notice that the main melody (the main structure is completely intact with some minor variations/flair between the versions), bassline, and harmony are all exactly the same in each different attempt I made with this short composition of mine I loved, but was never able to really use in anything! The counter-melody and drum-track part are only in the version that I made for the show.

For this version I wanted to make it within the time frame given, have two major sections (A and B sections; each 8-bars long), be 16-bars total, and have sort of sense of... I guess kinda adventure-like if I had to label it (a sort of confident piece that is complete).

I assure you it's 100% original material composed by me. I can even scan and post the notes my comp professor wrote about it from my lessons all those years ago! I'm a composer by trade and hold two degrees in the field as well! I custom created all of the patches used in the recording and even provided a copy of the sheet music I created in my notation software to generate the MIDI data I used (if you'd like to see any of it, or want the MIDI I created before importing it into Reason, just let me know). It was created in Reason 4.0, and I did some minor post on it in Peak Pro.
And it's Charles or Chuck if you prefer! Not Chris lol
Hopefully this will put any doubts to rest.

Sorry, I should've made it clear that I was asking where the current theme came from (the Crystal Caves one), not yours. Yours just happens to remind me of a song from a game boy game, but I can't remember which.

Here's the song that yours reminded me of:
https://soundcloud.com/user704466924/polkamans

As soon as I played the melody, I realized how little it has in common with yours. But the bigger question remains: which game is this from, why is this song stuck in my head, and why did your song immediately remind me of it? It is from Pokemon, right?

It was a good excuse to play my electric piano that's covered in about 2mm of dust, though.

Oh that's alright. (I would guess it was still probably e-mail or something of the sort though)

I think your song is definitely from a Pokemon game, but I think it sounds like route music. I can literally hear the accompaniment to it in my head too as I listen to your recording! The similarity comes in with the first six notes because they have similar rhythm and pitch (though i'm not sure what the key of the Pokemon game is actually in), but after that the similarity is totally gone.

Also I loved that ending! Haha. You should keep playing more!

I found the song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBfqvCqFMJc. I'm surprised I remembered it since I haven't play any pokemon since 1998, but given that it's a 50s piece repeated again and again, it's no wonder that it's engrained in my memory.

Yeah, I should play more. Short but uninteresting story to anyone but me: hadn't played piano regularly in about 7 - 8 years, thought buying an electronic piano to supplement my acoustic one would encourage me to compose or record myself playing, played for about 3 months, and then I stopped... that was 3 years ago.

The piece at the end that I didn't completely hack off was the end to SMW, of course. I love it because it and Koji Kondo's other ragtimes can be blended together into medleys with very little effort.

Episode 402: Shmuptroidvanias

This week! Jonathan Metts from Nintendo World Report's Radio Free Nintendo joins the fray to chat about games. Topics include the Destiny beta, Club Nintendo Elite Rewards (and surveys), NPDs/Xbox One Kinectless SKU, Jonny’s gaming origin story, Pokémon X and Y, Rogue Leader, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, virtual console recommendations, and playing video games in SPACE.

I found the issue of Nintendo Power that features Mike's Play It Loud! Game Boy contest entry. Even as a lad he understood what went into '90s ad design.

I see all that Nintendo talk made Mike leave in disgust. All the P1 regulars seems to be dropping like flies. How long until it's just CJ by himself talking about Nintendo, or Phil doing 60 minute skits using all of his voices?

I would listen to either of those.

Oh thank gawd Jonathan talked about the shitty Club N Plat/Gold game selection. I didn't mind digital goods but yea, the selection was shitty and I'm glad he pointed that out. The digital goods should've been something you can't get anywhere else. Nintendo made it easier to care even less about filling out surveys now.

Also, I miss Greg Sewart

Sorry. Currently going through a home renovation and I don't have a reliable spot to sit and record each week. Chances are I'll be missing the next episode as well.

Havent been able listen for a while. Working my way back from this weeks episode.

@CJ: have you tried to make a inside the actors studio gaming questionnaire for yout guest?

What is your favorite gaming word?

If heaven exist, what game would God be proud you finished?

a goyim and his cachkies are soon parted.

I actually enjoyed the cachkies, and lament having to select from a bunch of shit i never wanted like ice climber or ones i already have like DK

My 3DS game cases are truly awesome. and when i show people my solid gold Zelda Nunchachka it's like opening the Arc in Indiana Jones O_o

Jonny seems like a nice guy and all, but he didn't "speak to me" at all, and I say that as someone who enjoys his Wii U and 3DS a lot. (Also, fact check: that Ghost Recon game is available on the 3DS store, the only reason I know is because I meant to buy it when Ubisoft put it on sale a few weeks back).

While it was allegedly technical problems (note to CJ: I don't think his absence was ever addressed in the podcast), I'm going to suggest that Mike really dropped out because he couldn't handle the Nintendo love-in ;) Seemed like nearly everything was filtered through Nintendo goggles. I don't think it was helped by the fact that much of the show seemed like a conversation between Johnny and CJ (even Phil was rathre quiet), so some of the show's usual diversity was missing.

In other news, I was hoping to hear what Mike thought about Destiny.

yeah, while Rogue Leader was a really polished game with great mechanics, it was simply too hard to be that great. i think getting passed the the fourth stage or so was pretty much where it got absurdly difficult for what it was.

I think that the Minecraft videos are popular because are about dudes playing in private servers, with special rules. One time I watched they trying invade other player base and keep falling in traps. Maybe the server allow persistent world, with PvP etc.

Too bad the boys with Minecraft projects didnt win the Nasa competition. Well, maybe we will not going to Mars in my lifetime.

Yeah, the last few episodes have been chaotic and haven't really felt like the P1P I know and love. Not bad by any stretch, but I'm looking forward to having the main 4 back, talking about games they've played.

This week's guest was eloquent and experienced, but I felt maybe he took over a bit too much, almost to the point that I didn't feel CJ was the host anymore, and that I wasn't listening to an episode of P1P. But he seems like a really nice guy, and I'm considering checking out his other podcasts.

Last episode was both terrible and good.

Terrible because you guys spent way too long talking about Club Nintendo, and good because Dan Dormer was mentioned. I also enjoyed the Rogue Squadron talk.

I got to the questions, I own DynoWarz. Shitty game but I beat it as a kid, LOL

I'm not sure why we owned the game but we had it too and I actually completed it multiple times cause that's just what you do as a kid, lol

Haha. I listened to the whole episode and instantly remembered my thought when Jonny said, "wait--aren't we going to finish this Club Nintendo topic first?"

...

You mean the one we already drove into the ground? :P

Fucking Comcast, though. The worst.

Episode 403: Pluck Your Magic Twanger, Froggy

Plus: Destiny, Kim Kardashian, One Piece Pirate Warriors 2, Super Mario Land, Blaster Master, and much more. Listen to it!

Just to prevent any buyer's remorse it's probably worth noting that Phil wasn't telling the entire truth when he said the Pac-man Fever album had been reissued on CD. Sony owns the album and have not chosen to release it in any digital format, physical or otherwise.

Buckner & Garcia attempted to license the album from Sony, but were unable to reach an agreement. They ended up rerecording the entire album and releasing it as a reissue of the original, but it's definitely not as good. It's hard to miss this information if you're looking on Amazon, but it's not as obvious on iTunes. Caveat emptor.

About halfway through... maybe the liveliest show in a while. I've never heard of the guest or his podcast, but he's pretty good so far.

Yeah I forgot that the re-released CD version of Pac-Man Fever were not the original recordings. In this age where almost everything sees a rerelease I'm surprised that Sony's hanging onto it like that. Especially when they could've maybe capitalized on the song they did for Wreck-It Ralph. Hrm.

That's because the opportune time for this will be when they release their sure smash hit Pixels starring Adam Sandler.
