The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I believe the reasoning was: slightly watered down Halo gameplay, plus Borderlands stripped of personality, plus more agreeable art style = success.

I think you meant "Borderlands with actual enemy AI that's interesting to fight instead of just running towards you shouting dumb jokes".

It's been pointed out that I made an error in the show notes and the Walking Dead spoilers actually end at 1:02:00 not 1:20:00. So. Oops.

CJ made a really great point about Adblock. If you don't want people to use it, don't have invasive gross ads to annoy people. GAF does it well.

Guys, I love the show, really I do. And I love how you guys laugh at your inside jokes, but for the love of Greg Sewart, could you stop lingering on whether to clue others in on the joke and decide not to?

Great discussion on adblock. I personally have it turned off, but whenever I visit a site with horrible content covering ads, I just don't visit that site ever again.

Which inside joke did we linger clueing people into? We will try to do better in the future.

Thanks!

The one where Mike had no idea what you were laughing at, then after Phil pondered if he was going to explain it to Mike, he then asked Mike if he wanted to know. At that point Greg moved the group off the joke.

How is that an inside joke? I knew that's what the line was from. I just assumed there must be something more to it for it to be an inside joke.

It was great having the band back together and excellent audio quality on the audio pod. While I always enjoy guest episodes (heck, I enjoy every episode no matter what) this felt particularly awesome since it's been over a month having the four fellas all on at the same time.

Take it easy, grandpa. You direct your ire at Phil. I was just having fun doing a stupid voice.

Yeah, but why do you think they use more invasive ads? Because more and more people use adblock, and they need to get more clicks from the people that don't. I use adblock myself, but there's no doubt that the more people use it, the harder the people that don't will be punished with more intrusive ads. The gaming sites need revenue to survive, otherwise you P1P guys won't have anyone to mock every week ;)

They're also trying to sneak in ads that circumvent adblock, especially in video content. It's a bad situation overall, and I actually would prefer if all sites offered a premium, ad- free version.

Sewart you are absolutely right about that Barbie show

My 3 yr old daughter has had me put it on several times and it can be pretty hilarious. It's just so self-aware

You'd have to show me some data that suggests clickthrough rates are appreciably better for screen takeovers and video pop-ups. Because I haven't seen it. Simple banners tailored to your browsing history perform MUCH better.

I have, even my three year old thinks its trash. Of course she also hates my little ponies so clearly I am doing something right.

My kids want nothing to do with My Little Ponies...thank god. I'm currently trying to steer my oldest away from Ever After High and Monster High.

But when that Barbie show is on I just can't help but laugh at it.

I didn't really pay close attention to it so I can't pinpoint specifics but I remember thinking "the writers of this show are bizarre and this is inappropriate for kids."

She basically just watches Curious George over and over. which is great!

I love Robotech/Macross, but cant stand Lynn Minmay, that bitch. Watch Yamato 2199, this is a great remake from original series (Starblazers in US).

You guys could always get your children into pro wrasslin'. WWE is a PG product!

Could you imagine neogaf with those kinds of ads?

I'm not saying I agree with Sonic never being good, but Phil's comparison between Mario's pipes and Sonic's 20+ second loop/boost/whatever sequences was pretty stupid.

I think the real reason video ads are on the rise is because the ad rates for video are better than more traditional advertising. No idea about screen takeovers, but people I know who are in the know say they wish they could serve more video because that's where the money is (note -- these guys aren't in the game media).

This show sounds packed to the gills with quality video games discussion. I cannot wait until I'm listening to it at 0430 hours tomorrow morning.

I don't read Polygon anymore, but since mik brought it up, I thought I should see what he was talking about.

Polygon's Metrico Review:
http://www.polygon.com/2014/8/5/5971117/metrico-review-moving-pieces
I get the feeling that the developers of Metrico never watched Jurassic Park.
...
This is where the island tour is attacked by the Tyrannosaurus, to bring this back to my original statement. To paraphrase the character of Malcolm in Jurassic Park — in what we'll call the "Goldblum Conundrum," if you will — developer Digital Dreams seems so fixated on what they could possibly cram into Metrico's litany of control demands that it never stopped to ask if it should.
There are a lot of special parts of the review, but it's amazing when the first sentence of a review stretches into a movie reference that doesn't make sense unless you are some kind of JP nerd. I can't tell if this is better or worse than that Icarus-myth metaphor that he used ages ago.

Good show so far. Moving at a good pace and not dwelling for too long on insignificant shit. I still think a 3-man team is the sweet spot for keeping conversation flowing and moving.
