Watch Dogs was a great game. Lots of fun. The story is meh but I loved the shooting and hacking in it. If it weren't for the online only trophies, I would totally Platinum this game.

Yeah I really should try and continue with it. I just thought it started with such a whimper. :

It doesn't really get great until you get more of your hacking abilities and the city opens up. I think you'll get those a few missions in after all the tutorial stuff.

Seeing how many gaps there are in y'alls previous gaming experiences, I say table Watch Dogs for a decade and play more old shit you missed!

I concur, overall I had a great time with it. As with the best shooters, the combat in the game gives you a lot of room for improvisation and experimentation in fairly wide open areas.

I enjoyed Watch Dogs a lot more than I thought I would. I had no idea what "hacking" would turn out to be as a game system but in the end it reminded me a lot of the "predator" aspect of the Batman Arkham games, only instead of sitting in gargoyles picking out enemies one by one you sit hidden in a corner and use cameras to get the upper view and take out enemies one by one.

It was also pretty refreshing to play a vigilante in an open world city instead of the same old criminal activities you do in GTA/Sleeping Dogs/Saints Row.

Just scanning the article. For the most part I agree with it. The exclusivity deal could mean anything from Microsoft paying a portion of the dev budget to technical and QA support from MS to basically free marketing during the prime months of the year and more. Or, actually, even all of that. Maybe even a hardware bundle (which would be huge).

Wasn't the original Tomb Raider one of those games that sold really well but somehow didn't manage to meet revenue expectations? This deal could definitely keep that from happening again.

Plus Microsoft's holiday lineup isn't exactly bursting with loads of console exclusives, so that gives Tomb Raider even more prominence on the console as opposed to another AAA multiplatform game in a sea of AAA multiplatform games.

From a business perspective, this totally makes sense to me.

On top of that you get to launch the "definitive" edition of the game at a later date, perhaps the first time you have to spend your own marketing budget, and it's on a game that's already (hopefully) a hit.

Been a fan of Player 1 for awhile now but the last few months it's been my go to podcast, especially with Garnett and John's schedule and losing interest in Giant Bomb. I feel like it's a great mix of video game talk and nonsense, and the nonsense is better then Giant Bombs . Keep up the good work guys !

Well obviously Square thought it was a good business move otherwise they wouldn't have done it, and we'll never know the exact terms of the deal so we will never be able to say whether it was or not. I don't think an article needed to be written defending a company because they did something they thought was in their best financial interests.

That's apparently a common misconception. Initially it failed to meet expectations, but:

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/once-an-underperformer-tomb-raider-nearing-6-million-in-sales/1100-6418162/

"By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for our Tomb Raider reboot, and, having achieved profitability back in 2013, Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance," Gallagher said.

Ah OK. I just remember soon after it was released simultaneously hearing how well it had done while Square was calling it a financial failure.

I don't get all the outrage over Tomb Raider.

The previous two third party exclusives on Xbox One (Dead Rising 3, Titanfall) reportedly had budget issues that lead to the Xbox exclusivity deal being made. I'm inclined to believe Square is only giving up on PS4 and PC initial sales because of a similar situation here, and they didn't have much faith in the game to begin with.

And that's not to mention there are countless games that are console-exclusive to PS4 because Sony paid those devs upfront. This kind of deal is nothing new in the gaming industry, the only different (and sad) part is that even major high profile games are struggling for funds these days.

I haven't finished the recent episode, but if it stays strong then the last 3 have been really good. By restricting the 'whatcha been playing' segments to games all of you have played or games that inspire you to say something interesting, that segment has become way more interesting.

Devoting more time to the news is great because everyone on the show can join the discussion.

You aren't the Howard Stern show where the source material is usually what's going on in people's personal lives, but adding a little bit of yourselves to the show is a welcome flavour. CJ's trip to the airport with the annoying cousins was an interesting and relatable anecdote, and I always enjoy mik and Greg talking about their relationship with their kids, whether it relates to videogames or not. You could hear the pride in mik's voice when he mentioned his daughter's discovery of Salinger and other artists.

The show has never been better.

The only thing I don't understand is that people enjoyed the last game enough to be upset over this. Even setting aside my personal distaste of cinematic games, I find it crazy that this somehow ended up being the timed exclusive people are angry about.

I'm just glad the same thing isn't happening with Temple of Osiris.

Mike, thanks for the Inbetweeners recommendation on the podcast. I started it this evening, and I'm hooked. It's like the British version of my highschool life, complete with fake IDs and sexual missteps. That said, when is the best time to watch the first movie? Does it take place inbetween the episodes or afterwards?

I thought I'll chime in about Ghibli shutting down. There was a guy by the name of Yoshifumi Kondo who was being groomed to become the next Miyazaki/Takahata. He had worked as an animator on a number of features for Ghibli including Kiki's and Princess Mononoke and was given the director's chair for the wonderful Whispers of the Heart. Unfortunately his untimely death at only 47 from an aneurysm after only one film scuppered that idea. It was Kondo's sudden death that prompted Miyazaki to announce his retirement for the first time.

There was also the time when they recruited Mamoru Hosoda from outside of Ghibli to direct Howl's Moving Castle, but there was a falling out and Hosoda abruptly left leaving Miyazaki to come out of his original retirement. Incidentally Hosoda who went onto to direct The Girl Who Leaped Through Time and Summer Wars, has been given the label (or curse) of being the next Miyazaki.

The anime industry is going through hard times at the moment with success only measured in blu-ray sales to a ever narrowing demographic of otaku with their rather dubious taste. Studio Ghibli closing down or whatever they eventually do, is only really a sign of the times unfortunately.

Greg, as someone who does something really stupid for charity on an annual basis, what's your problem with the ice bucket thing?

I just dislike the message that's constantly repeated (dump a bucket of ice water on your head or you have to donate $100 to an ALS charity). I just wish that these generally rich people had been more clear about the fact (I hope) that they were dumping water over their heads AND donating money to an ALS charity.

This morning I did a bit more research and apparently the whole thing has been quite successful in raising a lot more money for ALS research this year than in recent years. So, hey, if it's working I'm all for it. I still hate the wording that's used when people are challenged, though. Especially celebs who presumably would have the means to make sizable donations to ALS research.

Do you think it's odd that you assume all the people who are dumping buckets of water over their head aren't donating money as well? Does it make you think that maybe you have a cold, black heart that has succumbed to cynicism and doubt and are now just a husk of a shell of a soulless automaton walking through life believing in nothing?

I know why you hate freedom, since you are a Canadian, but why do you also hate charity?

I can't argue with any of that. :)

It's just unfortunate wording. It makes charity sound like a punishment.

Mike, you don't have to be smart to follow the Skip Bayless method of journalism. And if you don't think that's what the Kooch does, you are nuts. The Goose is a True Believer, but the Kooch is a huckster.

I am loving the song outros.

Also the whole "fanservice = creepy" I blame Evangelion and the subsequent merchandising. I have no proof, but that is when I felt the tide turn.

Somewhere around 2000, and that train never slowed down.

You're not much of an anime historian, Mr. Newtype USA. There have been questionable shots of underage characters since Astro Boy, but it really picked up in the 1970s with the boom of magical girl anime and the rise of crap-peddlers like Go Nagai.

Yeah but the trend of including some pervy shot in nearly everything is - I feel - a much more recent trend. When it became less a flash here and there to Girls Bravo type lets just have this alien chick fellate a banana. Fan service suddenly became the whole point of the show. :

I'm no anime historian, but I think it's possibly because anime companies are consolidating their audience. Rather than target a wider audience with family friendly anime, they target a smaller, more rabid audience who are much more willing to spend money on merch and figures and pander directly to them with teh sexy animes, mainly because it's a stable-ish income stream compared to the wider audience and that wider audience is already on lockdown with Pokemon/One Piece/Youkai Watch. This now has also extended to games, which is just another channel to exploit otaku. Some games do break out beyond that though.

I was more curious as to the term "fan service" than the actual sick shit on display. Is it a form of self delusion to try and convince yourself that you aren't actually looking at nearly-to-fully naked adolescent girls? I guess it's strange to me because if you are at a point in your life where you enjoy stripping down a 10 year old who underwent extensive plastic surgery to have the breasts of Meatloaf in order to beat her then I would think you're probably past the point where semantic denial is necessary.

You like drawings of big tittied ten year olds. Own it.

my boss is 55yo and purchased Akiba's Trip. so i told him about the podcast convo and how mike sarcastically suggested the best games are ones youre too embarrassed to be seen playing, his response; "I agree."

Oh, that term. Well showing gratuitous ass shots is still fanservice (done explicitly or with the purpose of pleasing fans). It just so happens that getting Snake into Smash Brothers Brawl is also considered fanservice under the aforementioned definition, in fact Smash Brothers in its entirety is fanservice.

Generally speaking, when talking about the titillating form of fanservice, it's written out as "fanservice" (or fapservice) whereas normal, non-sexy fanservice is just written out without the scare quotes.
