The Player 1 Podcast Topic

We had a couple weeks of horrible de-sync issues. I guess that isn't specific to CFM, but it kept us from moving forward.

Weird, never ran into that. Wonder if we started the league after that shit had been figured out, usually we wait a couple weeks but I didn't think we did this year.

Also the argument for NBA not being the sports game of the year is that the NBA is shit.

NCAA games aren't made anymore because no one wants to have the potential liability of being sued by every player represented in the game once college sports are finally blown up and/or those kids unionize. Can't really fault EA after the various likeness lawsuits were lost.

Oh, I know all the reasons it isn't around, and I've never blamed either side for its disappearance. But it's still a huge letdown for me to see my favorite game series evaporate.

You would have enjoyed the discussion that happened after the recording. In short, I agree with you. I really can't watch NBA games anymore. Rich thinks it's better than ever. But I can't watch 48 minutes of flopping and 1-on-1 iso nonsense. I loved the NBA in the mid- to late-80s (and yeah, the mid-90s years when the jazz were competitive), but I can't watch it now.

Apparently one of the fixes was that everyone needed to choose a set of standardized default camera settings.

[Doddcast Talk] I was surprised to see Rich Grisham put Far Cry as his number 2 (non-sports) game of the year. I have the same general disinterest in over the top violent games he does and didn't expect he would take to Far Cry the way he did. His talk basically sold me on the game

Never thought I'd long for the heady days of kickstarter begging. Then patreon showed up and took the 30 days of hat in hand model and extended it to panhandling ad infinitum. The only positive is that I can't conceive of any way for this to get worse.

Glad to hear Mike enjoying Sunset Overdrive. Hopefully we talks it about some more next week. The later weapons will give him the kick he wants.

Maybe Naturebox could make a kickstarter to finance their Patreon push.

I hope those guys are able to sustain and not have it become a RebelFM-type $30k-in-a-sinkhole deal. But honestly, if you like the content someone's producing and want them to continue doing more of it, why wouldn't you want to help out the process?

I dunno. I have a really, really negative reaction to Patreons for some reason, and I can't figure out why. So I don't back any Patreons, period, and I wish I knew why it brings up such a negative reaction in me that I never felt as strongly towards Kickstarter, for instance, or basic donations.

Totally understand. I support two Patreons and do click links to advertisers/use show-supporting coupon codes for businesses that advertise on other podcasts.

Luckily we accept show support in the form of continued listenership, telling a friend about the show, tweeting in a question, fan art, iTunes review, donation, clicking through to Amazon from playeronepodcast.com or Patreon - any way you want to do it. Or none of those things.

Well yeah of course, was just trying to figure out why Patreon in particular rubs me the wrong way compared to those other forms. I really can't put my finger on why.

How about hyper-criticial, non constructive criticism?

Dunno, patreon just in general seems weird to me. Maybe because I'm constantly bombarded by failed 20 something sports writers who want people to give them a buck to read their longform on the state of baseball and what it means for the endangered Burmese python but it just seems like the domain of The Dude worshipers who refuse to get a damn job.

But since I accidentally posted in this thread it's because you gave it away for free for too long, honey.

We'll have to figure out something good for the $150 level. We'll see where we are after this month and how people are feeling - whether keeping this structure or moving to something else is appropriate.

mik, we know how you feel about Arthur Gies, but how do you feel about Tom Chick?

Every year the Tom Chick top 10 draws out the same shock and anger from people on GAF who have never heard of him, but for some reason I feel that I can at least respect Chick as a critic.

I don't know if that's because the dude has been doing game reviews forever and I can at least respect his views even if I disagree with them (ie, Forza Horizon 2 is a 1/5 while The Crew is his GOTY), but I just don't have the same instant-eyerolling reaction that happens when I read a Gies piece.

Chick's who Gies wishes he was, but while Chick will give well-reasoned arguments as to why he feels a certain way, Gies will always, always fail to justify the shit that comes out of his mouth.

Heh, I feel like Gies tries to hide behind purple prose quite often to try to deflect any criticism of his own criticism.

Immediately thought of Gies when I read Chick's line about Bayonetta being a litmus test for people being unable to distinguish sexy from sexist.

I really wish there were more reviewers like Chick, I think his are the only I've read that are fun to read when he disagrees with me. Usually that situation plays out like IGN's Alien review, I really liked that game and saw that IGN didn't give a great score, read the review and it boils down to "I chose to play this game on the hardest difficulty and it's just too dang hard!"

On the other hand, I love Mario games but it's hard to argue with anything Chick wrote in his 3-star review of 3D World.

I don't like Gies but I've got nothing against him.

I found what you are saying to be true when recently reading his Dead Space 3 review. I'm still flabbergasted that he gave the game a 9.5.

Comparing Chick and Gies is silly. The worst episode of Three Moves Ahead (from when Tom was on anyway) is much better than the best episode of Rebel FM. Not even a contest. And I love Chuf too :(

This discussion reminds me, Is there a collection of Tom vs Bruce anywhere?

Wasn't Tom really sick or something? Or am I misremembering? I used to read his stuff all the time, but it kind of fell out of my rotation.

Episode 427: Karaoke Means Plan
