The Player 1 Podcast Topic

A new Playstation portable is definitely going to be released, it's just a matter of when. They can't bail out of the Japanese market, and gaming on mobile is too big to completely ignore. My bet is they'll finally switch to Android and build some basic Playstation stuff on top of it.

I don't think that would be hugely successful but with a low investment like that (off the shelf hardware and software) you don't really need to sell 50 million to be in business. And it would be much easier to convince developers to port to that platform when it's just Android with a few extra stuff.

The sad thing about the Vita is that it would have been cool to have a gaming focused OS on tablets, TV's and phones. Sony just didn't invest what it would take to compete in that space, it's out of their league.

should be getting the new 3ds later today, haven't used my xl much lately. vita gets the most time from me (playing Muramasa), which still isn't that much, even though i do like the system a lot..

need to finish Ocarina, I'm on the last dungeon. then i can finally take up the Link Between

Now that MH is seemingly a Nintendo exclusive franchise, what do people even play on Vita in Japan though? Yeah, there are the JRPG ports and dumb Gust/IF/whatever games, but there isn't that big megahit that everyone plays is there?

Listening to him reminds me a lot of Dan Rykert. Just guys whose tastes stopped evolving when they were 11 or so. It's annoying at first because you think "fuck me these guys can't be real" then you realize they are and it becomes adorable.

This is incredibly accurate.

I wonder how long the show will go on for this weekend considering they have to talk about the polygon story, the Peter Molyneux story, nods, and more. This seems like a big week for news and gaming press news.

Well, reading their tweets, I imagine 50% of the show will be spent on how to properly unscrew the back of a New Nintendo 3DS XL. I'm still not 100% sure that they actually read the manual before attempting to do so!

None of them seem terribly handy. I'd imagine they had to go out and purchase a screwdriver just for this.

Nice show this week. Kevin is great, I've always loved his general enthusiasm and passion for gaming, and I can relate to quite a few of his experiences as we're about the same age. I love what he's doing with Back in my Play as well. I don't have any interest in Fast and the Furious but who cares, haha.

I miss Mike, though. Every episode starts with me wondering if he's there or not. Come back, Mike!

Yes, I really enjoy Kevin's podcast because it shows why these old games are so special and how they hold up. I'm just glad he doesn't talk about movies on Back in my Play. I would turn that shit right off. When you wont take a chance and watch, easily the top 5 movie ever made "The Godfather" over fast and furious then there's no hope. Stay with the games, please Kev.

Either Kevin was trolling or he has the most wrong opinions per pound flesh of any human I know. What an astonishing display of ignorance and poor taste.

I gave Back in My Play a try, and still check it out from time to time, but it didn't impress me. The intros were long and dry monologues that I only assume were bullet points from wikipedia articles. My suggestion would be to reduce their length and/or get better acquainted with the history so you can tell game's story with more passion. And involve the guests if possible. While the intros were way too long, the game discussions were usually short and superficial. This was disappointing, particularly for titles I fondly remembered; I was curious how other people experienced game back in the day and how it holds up on. Kevin did have some great childhood stories, and that personal touch is definitely welcome, but he repeated those stories a lot (I've heard about the divorce, stopping off at arcades on road trips, getting that special game on your birthday/christmas, etc.) and too often didn't have much to say about the game itself.

6.5/10

visuals - 8/10

i find it kind of weird that someone who has a huge appreciation for retro games has so little for film, but to each their own.
I understand that no one has the time to fully appreciate everything, but it annoys me when someone (Kevin) is aggressively ignorant and hostile towards something they don't appreciate. It's like an adult who only eats macaroni and cheese and is proud of it (or cheesy potatos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJGIMd3_LfY). I don't expect you to have the palette of a Michelin chef (not many of us do), but try something out of your comfort zone once in awhile. And if you only enjoy eating Mt. Dew, Doritos, and Dominos pizza, don't act like everything else sucks.

e: the big difference between games and film is that, barring the early 1900s, film technology has been adequate for a very long time. There are films from the 30s and 40s with fantastic resolution and cinematography. The 50s, 60s, and 70s in particular have films that look as good or better than many films coming out today.

i'd argue that a lot of older games are way more difficult to go back to than older films

I doubt many people would argue with that. Most games pre-NES & NES games are difficult to get into and have aged. It makes sense as video games are alot more technology driven. Movies however are a medium that hasn't really changed much for the most part. .

For example, I can still pop in a Marx brothers movie and have a few laughs, but going back and playing atari games kinda blows

Same here. I dont care about KL's taste in movies, but Back In My Play is just not clicking. Not saying it's a bad show, and he seems to be a big retro games enthusiast, but for example - I listened to the Star Fox episode a while ago, and the lack of real Dylan Cuthbert talk was confusing. People criticize Retronauts all the time, but just listen to the same topic on both podcasts, or something like RFN's Retroactive, and you definitely hear the difference in knowledge, research & even passion for the games.

Also, I swear if I have to listen to KL rant one more time about how the 3DS volume output is too low for his $300+ studio headphones (wtf), I'm going crazy. In every podcast he's guesting in, he has to at least mention it once it seems. And yes, we already know, you have friends in Japan, Kevin. ;) Maybe finally learn how to pronounce their names? ;P

Poor Kevin is getting the RPS Molyneux treatment :(

Speaking of, I found it weird how people were reveling in that interview - "Finally, some REAL journalism!" it totally wasn't. It was just the other end of extreme.

Lots of devs saw that interview and said "yknow what? fuck talking. I don't think it's worth it"

Certainly, 'fuck talking to RPS.'

Gotta love Kevin for not worrying what people will think of his opinions. He always makes an impression and is always interesting. I give his performance two Kevins out of Kevin.

I have tried to make it clear that Back in my Play is a podcast for people to discuss their memories of the game and their impressions after revisiting it. It is not a historical podcast. I am straight up that the initial "history" section is a list of bullet points to just put the discussion in some context of time and place. The show has been criticized for his, but again, I am not implying that is the lure of the show.

As for the 3ds headphone thing. They are $150 consumer headphones that are driven by a Gameboy Pocket without issue. It is a flaw in the 3DS design, especially for someone that flies on planes a lot.

I hope you give the show another look with the context of it being just people hanging out and discussing their personal history and memories of said game.

I actually find the right nub fucking awesome as a camera control stick.

I tried it with Majora's Mask in the store last week, and thought that it was surprisingly effective at that for what it is. Definitely a welcome addition, all in all.

Is the brightness an issue on the new 3DS though, or is it just that auto-brightness thing I was hearing about? Brightness was so very low ... I couldn't find a way to adjust the brightness settings in the store demo device, couldn't go into any settings or menus.

The screen darkening happened to me repeatedly with Majora's Mask, so I just disabled the auto-brightness.

i think the reviews i read for The Order were fair, i doubt there was collusion going on, the dogpile was au natural, and cinematic short games with no replay usually don't fair well with gaming press.

i think Ryse is an apt comparison, and also a game i enjoyed that one weekend for its $20 price tag.

There is only collusion in that games reviewers are a bunch of insecure kids who don't want to be an outlier for fear of getting shoved in a locker.

I think it's interesting that Gone Home was attacked for pretty similar reasons as The Order (too short, too expensive, "not a game"), but as that was a smaller title I only even heard those complaints existed because every games journalist on my Twitter feed rushed to its defense.

Too expensive? I didn't know it got attacked for that. It's just hype building people up way too much and people being a little satisfied when it all goes down in flames. Advertising and hype is a hell of a thing. Personally I -love- figuring out what makes people psychotic and weird when it comes to advertising, and building behaviors that continually reward people for inward-facing circlejerks. Social media has been a lot of fun to watch be a part of that reward.

I'm getting off topic too much. Bottom line seems to be Gone Home never really said it was gonna be the shit, so it's easier to accept and defend than a game that had a bunch of people say it was gonna be the shit before they played it, like the Order. Nobody was making assumptions of Gone Home before release, too. Not on the level of the Order.

Gone Home was a non-game in the correct way. It featured a female protagonist exploring a mundane environment that reminded reviewers of their mundane child hood. It never tried to be a video game. It also (for the most part) let them tell their own story, and most of these clowns think they can write, so that's a huge bonus.

mentioning Uncharted as a comparison to The Order is straight sequel bargaining though.

I knew nathan drake. nathan drake was a friend of mine. sir gallahad, you're no nathan drake.

Gone Home was something i didn't think i'd enjoy as much as i did, great game.

I think if the mix had been the same as Uncharted 1 The Order would have been like a 9 for me. I really enjoyed the weapons and the combat scenarios, there just weren't enough of them. The world and characters are more interesting to me than the Uncharted world and that carried me through, solid 7 on my non-existent review scale.

Ultimately I look at it more like the first asscreed, they've built an interesting world now build on it. Of course. I didn't have an issue with the length. Comparing it to Uncharted again, I prefer a narrative driven shooter to be closer to this than Uncharted 2 which was what, 12+ hours?

12 seems too long for an Uncharted style game, i wanted to say it was 9hrs.

i can't really think of the last linear third-person-shooter i would give a 9 on my non-existent scale (Last of Us, though not really a linear shooter??), i oddly liked Spec Ops, even though the mechanics were the standard affair. i think that was about 6-7 hours.
