The Player 1 Podcast Topic

It was a lot less of a Nintendo podcast when Mik was around. This is what happens when you put in a 4th chair who's obsessed with handhelds.

Heard Jeff Gerstmann drop CJ's name on this week's Giant Bombcast. Man you guys are famous.

You know what? We're all giving Ethan shit, but I respect the consistency between his love for the Vita and the Switch. That makes sense and there's a line you can follow.

People who actually enjoy playing handheld games are seriously underrepresented on podcasts.

We still would have the discussions with Mik around - since there was alot of new leading up to NX/Switch...its just part of a console launch.

Then again...we have too much Nintendo talk apparently, but when Vita is brought up it gets shut down asap as well. Thought this was just a show about guys discussing what they are interested in and playing...not P1P trying to fill some quota.

If you go back far enough, everyone who is still in games worked with each other at some point. lol

I realise that any game getting lots of hype is annoying after a while, but I'm confident that Zelda is now my favourite Nintendo game, and possibly my favourite game of all time. I'm 70 hours in and I haven't faltered once. If I find myself frustrated I just do something else. Sometimes I'll play for 20 minutes, sometimes for 3 hours.

On the flip side. despite my having completed 11 Zelda games, I've never completed Link to the Past and I don't enjoy it much at all. It's my least favourite top-down Zelda. I'll try yet-again this year and see if I can push past my problems with it.

Many of the complaints shared for BOTW are completely valid, and some are a bit stretching. The pacing of the game means that there will be some sections of ground without any enemies or collectables, but even climbing a rockface can be fun.

Mostly, Breath of the Wild is the first Zelda game I've ever played where I felt my time was being respected. I have never felt lost and bored, wanting for something to do next. I've never had the game remove some of my progress due to save game restrictions or the obnoxious Majora timer. Sometimes I do waste time because I'm having fun, but if I know I have a short time available I'll teleport to one of the shrines I've unlocked but not tackled, or take revenge on one of the guardians that murdered me earlier, or simply wander somewhere I haven't been yet.

BOTW is a Mario 64 style event and it'll annoy a lot of people for a while as it hogs discussion in a lot of spaces and divides players and rattles detractors.

Which games should Player One be talking about, though?

Which games should Player One be talking about, though?

Still waiting on that Bully discussion lol.

Nah but honestly i agree - Zelda is a big deal, first main title after 5-6 years and new console launch. Its kinda expected to talk about it - especially if most of the people on the cast really enjoy it.

I dont get the complains in here. If you want Nintendo cynicism/hate, then you got basically every other podcast out there. As a big fan of Nintendo-games (and quality-games in general), i find the more positive attitude of this podcast so damn refreshing compared to basically every other podcast - and at least to me that has always been one of the main reasons why i have liked the show.

Like Giantbomb, who love Zelda and gave Mario Maker GOTY? Like Kinda Funny, who absolutely love Zelda and the Switch hardware? Like DLC who are talking about how Zelda is one of the best games of all time? Like 8-4 who just said 'if you're on the fence about a Nintendo system you're not a true gamer'?

Pray tell me what other podcasts hate Nintendo.

There is a massive difference in hate/cynicism and having legit criticisms.

I dropped this podcast a year or so ago once I realized Mik was never coming back, and CJ didn't want to move the podcast time to accommodate him(this may not be strictly true but it sure felt that way). Phil seemed to be missing a lot. Then they added Ethan and it became Nintendo central. The show was pretty nicely balanced before but it became unlistenable for me.

I wish they had replaced Mike with a block of salt instead, but still there's a good character in Ethan so it's not all bad. He's mostly just CJ amped up to eleven and it's tipped the podcast in the wrong direction a little.

Thanks for all of the feedback. It is always awesome to be able to interact with the P1 audience.

Before I follow up on these it might be best to clarify what I said on the show. I said that BotW "maybe the best game Nintendo has made." That might not mean it is my favorite Nintendo game of all time. I won't know that until I complete the main game and have some time separation from it.

This might be the first game I have put 40 hours into, in just a few short weeks. That is around a very busy travel and work schedule as well. In my late 20s and into my 30s, I have been much more of a short burst gamer. Maybe one of the main reasons most of my play time has been spent on the Vita and on retro games over the last few years.

The desire to explore that work and the evolution of Hyrule has been one of the main driving forces for me. In the previous games, and this really includes most games, I don't stop and look around at the world to appreciate the design of the terrain, sky, or art style. This is mostly unique to BotW for me.

I hope that clarifies my feelings.

Kevin goes so hard in on certain games. First, loving Persona 4 so much is pretty damn odd (it's a pretty basic dungeon crawler with a high school anime spin, dude. Play better RPGs) and now claiming Breath of the Wild is the best Nintendo game is a pretty bold claim.

I feel that he gets pulled in the internet hype machine. I like both Persona 4 and Breath of the Wild, but the overwhelming praise he gives them is so over the top.

I typically enjoy Kevin, though.

Is it odd? P4G clicked with me. Being set in modern day Japan, having well developed (although defiantly cliched) and written characters as well as a story that made you want to see what happened next. I am not one to normally put 65 hours into a game or get hooked by an JRPG like that. I also love what I have played of DQ VIII. I hope to go back to that at some point.

Am I alone in thinking P4G is incredible?

Also it is worth pointing out, due to my travel and work schedule of the last several years, I don't get to play everything. I do my best to only play fantastic games that deserve my time. If I am not having fun with a game I will drop it quickly as my gaming time is limited and valuable to me.

because that was what kevin was saying, that it grabbed him more as the game went on so perhaps the same could be true with greg. honestly it was a point that didn't really need to be made that way seeing as greg is enjoying the game. kevin could have just said something like "I'm curious to hear your thoughts as you keep progressing" or something like that. I think the "talk to me when you're 80 hours in" just got a default response to that kind of thinking that may not have been totally valid.

Yeah, even on the show that comment wasn't well articulated. I meant that the game seems laid out to exponentially build upon itself. From the combat, the gear, the world and of course the story. Even though I have played all of the main Zelda games, BotW was a mystery to me. Discovering new things in the backstory and the world was a constant driver for me.

As always I appreciate the feedback and hope to better voice my thoughts next time.

Don't sweat the complaints, P1 crew. I find Phil's voices and singing to be quite awful, I think Ethan is borderline certifiable at this point, and the show has been Nintendo central for a long time BUT ALL OF THAT IS OKAY. Seriously, I say that with no hint of sarcasm. Keep doing what you are doing because no matter what annoys me I keep coming back and I like hearing what everyone has to say. The show is great and it doesn't have to be all things to all people.

Also, being so heavy on Nintendo right now should be expected. When have we ever had new hardware come out and had podcasts stop talking about it after two weeks? Sheesh! Also, the new Zelda game is huge and I know I'll be playing it off and on for months so get ready to keep hearing about it. There are people who are just salty because it's a Nintendo game and they're out of their comfort zone when Nintendo isn't getting dogged on. Pretend it's Witcher 3 and suddenly talking about it for a month doesn't seem so crazy, does it?

Anyway, that's all I have for now. Keep on keeping on, P1 crew. Your show is a weekly treat that many look forward to.

Maybe the third week in a row into the Switch/Zelda hole is a bit too much if you are not playing Zelda.

I really hope they play Horizon and do the comparison. I am not sure if you can make more things in Horizon, but probably the world is faster to between quests. Hint: don't spend too much time in small side quests. They are boring.

Screw Nintendo! Talk about Sotenbori's favourite runner-up instead!

Still enjoy listening to the show a lot
except when Kevin is on :P
and look forward to it every week!

P4 (G) is great because of its setting. Maybe the combat is boring, but who cares when the writing actually makes you want to see what happens next?

True !!

Usually i dont care about the bitching since you cant satisfy everyone...but at this point you can hear Greg being fed up with it so it probably best to somehow restore the order again.

A reason why i never understood ppl hating on Ethan so much - because he also tried to talk about other stuff like Vita, was very hyped about VR and had a lot of impressions and played "new" current gen titles like WatchDogs2/Gears/REVII and co. - yet we only hear people bitching whenever Nintendo is brought up. He was bringing alot of different impressions when the rest of the cast wasnt playing too much new stuff.

Couldn't help but relate the final argument of the show to that of pushing one for joining a cult, but I totally get the passion surrounding the strengths of Zelda. Kind of perpetuates Greg's point about certain games(Zelda/Nintendo) being framed as having a bit too much fanaticism attached, but I certainly would not at all equate Kevin's response to being close to the villainy seen on the internet surrounding differing viewpoints(which I presume Greg was alluding to).

Still, I have held many of the same critiques as Greg before even hearing this episode, and though not all have been as problematic in my time, they are constructive and act as means for future-proofing the concept rather than condemning. It really does feel like there is a general resentment that equates objective flaws with damnation which is entirely unhealthy and hinders discourse.

It's a wonderful gem of a game with positives that do outweigh the faults, but one can't help but feel we must walk on eggshells to avoid conflating their existence with some unwarranted pushback against flared passions.

I share this sentiment, let your crew talk about what they want and less sarcastic "ugh great, we have to talk about Nintendo again" I've noticed that Phil jokes around or does the "turning on Mario" bit when a topic doesn't interest him, but majority of the time if a topic doesn't interest him he just goes quiet instead of going full snark, that's a lot more respectful.

Yeah i liked that about Phil in the past weeks - sure he didnt have much to say.but he was also just fine accepting most of the other opinions without the need to correcting them or convincing them of their wrong ways.

Most of the times both sides had valid arguments...for example when Greg said that Pro Controller or the bigger card seem like hidden costs if you wanna have a PS4/XBO type home experience on Switch. At the same time there are people that are fine with the Joycons or expected to have to upgrade to a bigger micro sd card like with most portable consoles.

During these argument i felt like Phil....just listening and both sides made valid points, not much to add.

I would like to think the Zelda fanbase has matured a bit since the Twilight Princess review hysteria. Skyward Sword certainly got a lot of backlash.

I am sinking dozens of hours into Word Cookies these days.
as the late Greg Ford once said, "mobile games aren't real games"

I dropped this podcast a year or so ago once I realized Mik was never coming back, and CJ didn't want to move the podcast time to accommodate him(this may not be strictly true but it sure felt that way).

I'm sorry you feel that way, but that is an extremely unfair statement.

It's not unfair as much as it's just false. And... made up? I don't believe any of us ever said that.

So I just finished Breath of the Wild with one missing memory and 8 missing shrines. Probably 150 hours put in. I'm with Kevin. This is easily my game of the generation. A top 5 all time. I have no problem if someone thinks this is the best game ever made. These last 3 weeks have been incredible.

I understand why some may be annoyed if they only get an hour or two of playtime. Especially right off the bat because this is a game where you keep on learning, keep on advancing and if you are stuck in the early aspects of the game for 10 or 15 play sessions then I can see the annoyances. For me it was eons since I last had to cook or worry about weapons. That to me was just my beginner phase. Now I'm at a point where I'm like "sell all this food" "which weapon should I drop from these 20".

Long story short, Wii U purchase justified. Some of the most beautiful videogaming I have experienced since Super Mario Galaxy, Persona 4 (this game is off the hook Kevin. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. You know you're right, dammit.) and FEZ. Too bad I can't wipe my memory like Link and experience the whole journey from scratch.

No, you're right no one ever did. I could explain why I got that impression from the episodes, but since you've both refuted it I won't belabor or spread further inaccuracies. Sorry I got the wrong impression.

In the end, the point is I missed Mik on the show. But podcasts change just like all of us do, so keep on doing what you're doing.

Nice episode.

Lol@CJ reaction to Ethan suggesting FF7R being at e3.

Phil so quiet this episode.

Also, don't understand Ethan sometimes. He says he isn't into games as a service but then lists like 5 games that fit that category that he would like on the Switch.

Phil was wicked sick this episode. Honestly, the only reason I showed up was because I had missed last week.

Hope you feel better soon Phil.

I understand you guys love Zelda and the switch, but wow - barely any discussion on anything else was a bummer. Hopefully Greg returns next week - at least with him bringing some logic to the switch talk it makes things more interesting.

phil. i hear a slide whistle after the palmer lucky nazi joke. i'm assuming it's yours. do you have a recommended make/model?

I like that a slide whistle is used in P1 and it is automatically assumed Phil is the one that used it (which is always going to be correct).

When editing this week I still lost it at Ethan yelling "MOTHER'S FART!"

it definitely got me laughing in my cubicle at work. good episode!

Didn't quite get the point of the Lego discussion after it was revealed to be a mistake but okay... Still a good listen.

Nintendo won't increase internal storage of the Switch.. they didn't do it on Wii, WiiU, DSi or 3DS. I'm fine with that, why should everyone pay for a more expensive console thanks to bigger storage if they might not even need the extra space?

Switch is less power than the other systems on the market, so if ports were to happen, devs would have to downres the used assets to make it work for the specific card size and the systems graphical capabilities anyway.

DQH1-2 were brought up as an example... Both of those games together are well over 50gb on PS4 yet the Switch release fits on a 32gb card. Another good example would be the last Tomb Raider game that was developed for Xbox One and still got a rather solid 360 version.

If there is money to be made the devs/pubs will make it work. Switch won't be an exception to that rule.

Sure. Except due to the fact that it will take greater effort - and thus greater cost - to port something to the Switch it needs to be even more potentially successful to justify the extra money. That was the point we were making.

While CJ thinks everyone needs a memory card for his alternate Chris Johnston Shot Donald Trump timeline, I'm planning to hold out until I actually run out of space on my Switch.

I'll be surprised if that happens before next year, and wouldn't be surprised if it's closer to 2019. I need to find a way to set a reminder so I can post in this thread when that day comes :)

My PS4 is still on the launch HDD (500GB?) and I never did upgrade my 360 past the launch HDD (20GB?).

Nintendo did raise the size of the bundled SD card size between the DSi, 3DS and n3DS. A short term (weak) solution may be a bundled 64GB card. I'm sure we'll see a Switch hardware revision announced within 18 months.

Sure,

just saying that if a pub/dev were willing to port AAA games designed for the other systems on Switch - they already would need alot of ressources in getting the game running well on Switch, i think whatever extra work needed to make it fit into that card at this point would be a non-issue.

These titles wouldnt run at 1080p/4k or whatever on Switch, likely wouldnt run/need the same HQ assets and textures like on the more powerful consoles etc. - a lot of stuff that adds up and result in a smaller data footprint.

GTA V, Rise of the Tomb Raider (360) vs. GTA V, Rise of the Tomb Raider (PS4/One)

would be good examples of this. So yeah the space is something every dev will have to consider, but i dont expect AAA hitting Switch unless the dev i sure they can sell at least 1m copies...and at that number, whatever they need to do to make it fit into Switch specification will be a non-issue.

I dont expect many AAA games to hit Switch at all - but if i were to bet on one it would be the CoD title and i would be interested to see how they handle the whole Switch approach compared to the other systems.

For the most part they just bundled it with the cheapest SD card they could get on a mass order. You had to upgrade your card on all of these systems if you were serious about digital content.

Dont see the point of bundling a Switch with a 64gb card when many customers wont need it to begin with and the other half likely needs more anyway and would upgrade to 128/200/256 asap.

Its all about having choices, whatever Nintendo adds to the packet will result in a more expensive system. If they add in a lets say 64gb cards and the system has to be priced higher because of this i dont really see the benefit, if i could use that money on the card that fits my need instead.

It might be an EU thing, but since Android phones are much more popular here the likelihood of someone already owning a bigger micro sd card is likely, same for people who upgrade from 3DS to Switch.

Edit:

What i would like to see down the line - an option to use USB HDD via Dock when playing on the TV. I think thats something they are looking into and that would help out people like Greg - who play mostly on the TV - quite a lot.

If i use my Switch only as a homesystem - i shouldnt have to spend mayor bucks on a micro SD card if i could buy or use 2TB USB HDD for much less.

Totally agree. This would be a great option.
