The Player 1 Podcast Topic

I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed in Chris and Greg. I know that they aren't into the artistic aspect of video games (not that Catherine is a straight-up Lovedelic art game, but it's a unique combination of gameplay and premise), but I thought at least 1 of them would have demonstrated more interest. I found the discussion about the experience and its relation to the developer trite.

They can buy what they want, of course, but they also didn't explain why they didn't want to play it. I'd rather have heard that than the _th discussion about feelies.

? Greg said he was pleasantly surprised by both Catherine and El Shaddai. He even put it on his queue on whatever rental service he uses.

From his past references to it on the show (though maybe he was joking), that queue amounts to "infinite backlog." He did say that he wouldn't play it at full price and when it comes out, even though there's very little new stuff competing with it.

I don't know; their appreciation for thriller stories in other games ought to have carried over here, I think.

Yea, sounded like Stewy liked both demos and he said he'll play them.

Lately it's actually been the other way around - I play anything on my gameaccess queue pretty much immediately, whereas I still buy the odd game that sits on my shelf untouched for months.

And I do like both demos, but neither enough to pay full price for them. And that has nothing to do with whether there are other new games to buy right now or not. It has to do with the basic fact that games are expensive. I want to experience both games but not to the point that I want to pay $70 to do so.

Sure, and that's not that big a deal. But, you know, why? That's an interesting question, since it ought to be right up your alley. What makes Heavy Rain or Bioshock immediate-plays to you and not this? That's not an accusation so much as a point of conversation.

Stewy, have you got your new TV yet?

I'd be very interested in hearing your opinions on the passive 3D technology - if this tech works well it may be enough for me to go for a similar TV at some stage.

Cheers :)

I'd be interested to see what you thoughts are also.

I'd say try out Gran Turismo 5, Wipeout Fury, and Super Stardust HD first, as they are said to have the best 3D images.

I grabbed the 47" version on sale for a very good price from Fry's and I have to say I'm very impressed.

Would have got the 55" version, but it was not on sale...

Are we talking about Catherine here?

Easy answer is I just don't buy many puzzle games anymore. The last one I spent any real time with was Picross 3D. And before that...I can't remember. I tend to lose interest in them pretty quickly.

Better to rent and find out for sure than get burned again.

and if you happen to love the game. buy it later.

I've been so busy over the weekend that I haven't had much chance to try anything. I fired up GT5, but that was before I'd really set anything up and overcome the input lag, plus I didn't fiddle much with the various 3D settings. Gonna give it a real try tonight or tomorrow.

The one thing I have (happily) discovered is that the interlacing caused by the passive 3D setup is pretty much a non-issue in our living room. We're sitting far enough away from the tv that it's pretty difficult to notice at all.

I found it weird you guys bemoaned Microsoft for never having sales. They have the Deal of the Week, which usually have something of worth (Stacking for 600 a few weeks ago) and for a while now have had other random sales on a lot of content.

I was under the impression it was Sony who was lacking in the sales department.

they mentioned Xbox had DotW but didn't promote them that well like Sony does with their sales on the dashboard.

So, a unique story doesn't make you more or less likely to play a game outside of your biggest genre preferences?

Also, how does Heavy Rain play into this? Is it a gameplay-less/interactive movie game to you, since it's ostensibly a sort of graphic adventure/puzzle game?

I thought it was interesting, since, I think, Bioshock Infinite and other sorts of games are pitched as story-driven experiences. Catherine's the same. So, I found it interesting that Catherine was boiled down to its gameplay essentials whereas excitement toward Levine's next game will be demonstrably story-based. That's not "wrong," but I don't think the reasoning was expressed well on the podcast.

I can't comment on elsewhere but in the UK at least the Deal of the Week is always on the dashboard, usually under the spotlight section.

Actually learning a bit about the story is the precise thing that's got me interested in playing a genre outside of my usual preferences.

The promised story was the same reason I ended up playing Heavy Rain, as well. Not to mention I enjoy graphic adventures and the visuals were very pretty. All of that got me interested in Heavy Rain early on.

Honestly, with Catherine, I just kind of tuned out on the early hype. My interest in anime is pretty much dead, although I will watch some every now and then. It's just that nothing about the early looks spoke to me at all, so I stopped paying attention.

It's interesting you mention BioShock. Despite being a story-driven game, I think most of the discussion re: BioShock 2 on our cast has been centred around game play.

I'll let you know if Catherine has tentacle monsters. ;)

I'll get back later, but thanks for the responses! Great show otherwise, per usual.

Another good episode, the PS3 hdd talk had me rolling, classic CJ :D

Been listening since around episode 20 (back in the Dormer era) and it has constantly been one of my favorite gaming podcasts, I never miss a week! Great job guys!

And Greg, I got one of those TV stands from Walmart a few years ago, I love it. The swivel action actually comes in handy more often than I thought it would.

Yeah, the stand is great. I'm very happy with it. Though I did realize today that the tv's not quite level.

Oh, wow, so you enjoy graphic adventures where the puzzles are contextualized but not abstracted/puzzle games (parts of White Birds, Myst)? I, personally, connect the 2.

I definitely caught the Bioshock 2 thing, which is why I skipped it to mention Infinite. At the time, you guys mentioned that the story team moved on and it didn't need a story sequel, anyway.

I suppose I'm looking for a grand reasoning that isn't there. Your interest got derailed by its __ and you hadn't been given a reason to jump back on board. Fair enough!

I have listened to the latest episide.. Enjoyed it.

My previous post was with regards to Stewy's 3DTV and if he had got it - and thus my question was answered! Looking forward to hearing about the Passive 3D, Greg.

I do have to say, in the last but one Podcast I was impressed by the responsible attittude towards buying the new TV.. taking time out to save a few more hundred dollars, ensuring it wasnt put on any credit cards.. Zen-like, totally un-gamer behavior.. next episode, BOOM, it's in the living room unboxed :)

The real question: result of saving said cash or a credit card cave-in?

Sale :)

No credit cards were used in the purchase of this television.

I don't post in this thread often. But I just want to say that I look forward and listen to the show every week :) . Loosing Ford isn't really a big deal to me. I don't feel the show changed one bit, which is good obviously.

Keep up the good work fellas.

PS: I almost got into a car accident because I of "Forever Finals". Totally lost it there :lol .

Just started listening to the latest episode...Sewart, regarding the 3DTV input lag on Game mode...

I don't know if you have read over at the AVS forums thread about the LW5600 line of TVs but that (like you seem to have found out) is a common complaint.

That thread also has some good recommended settings as well as other general info about the TV. Don't read the thread too hard or the people over there will make you hate your purchase (like the will with any TV you purchase) ;p

Also, question for you. How does the internet connection on the TV work for you? Mine seems spotty at best (and I've the a pretty nice wireless N router --- Linksys E3000). Just curious if it's something on my end, or just the set in general.

Today was the day when I discovered that I had somehow deleted my P1P subscription from iTunes. Very confusing.

I've currently got it hooked up through ethernet, since my router happens to be right next to the TV. Thinking I'll use the wifi dongle eventually, though.
