The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Great episode so far (as usual).

The controller talk about offset sticks was funny.

Mike made a point I really loved. Just say you prefer the 360 controller and stop trying to tell me how it's objectively/factually/scientifically superior somehow. It's fine to prefer one over the other but don't try to convince me how wrong I am for not liking it.

So they'll charge $499/549 if not 599. If this thing is a "supercharged PC" I have a hard time thinking they're going to charge less than that. But IMO it's probably better that I think it's going to be more expensive so I can be surprised if it's not.

As always, I really enjoyed the podcast. Regarding the console price, I'd rather pay the extra $100-150 if it meant that it included all of the features and peripherals that Sony and its third party developers wanted. We'd all rather pay $300 instead of $600 for a console, but if gaming is one of your main hobbies, I don't see what the big deal is, particularly if you have 9 months to save if money is an issue.

You're forgetting about scale. "Supercharged" PCs are expensive as much because of their limited production runs as they are for their component costs. Sony will be producing hundreds of thousands of these at a time, reducing the costs as a result

Doing one to one part comparisons to try and derive a per unit cost and thus divine a price to consumers is real dumb.

I don't understand how the talk is that "offset sticks" somehow are important (or that it's objectively the right way to build a controller). I do prefer the 360 controller myself, and it's all about how close the analog sticks are together on the Dual Shock and my grip in general... but I totally get why some people prefer it... it's not like it's poorly designed.

Anyhow, that's just an aside... the thing I didn't think about until listening to the show is the question of what these controllers are going to cost. I'm not sure if it's real or not, but I definitely have the sense that controllers continue to get more and more expensive with each generation. This isn't a Sony issue in particular, but maybe we'll see $60 this time around? (Yuck.)

You know that the MSRP of the Dual Shock 3 is $54.99 now, right?

At launch, Xbox 360 controllers were pretty pricey as well - I think they were close to $60 if they weren't $60 and came with Charge n' Play cables.

I'm with Mike on this one, I'd bet on $400 for the cheaper version.

When they say supercharged PC what it means is that they took an affordable PC architecture and beefed up its gaming-related capabilities. They didn't start from a thousand-dollar PC, on the contrary. The Jaguar+Radeon APU that will power the PS4 is something you'll find in $400 laptops. The difference is that the PS4 won't have the added costs of a screen, battery and portable form factor, instead they'll use that budget to beef up the GPU and memory and other things that suit a games machine.

That's pretty much the same approach they used to design the Vita. The Vita's specs are similar to what a standard $250 ARM-based device was back then (iPod Touch for example) but with a beefed up CPU (4 cores vs 2) and GPU (4 cores vs 1) and a memory architecture better suited for games (dedicated VRAM). You could say the Vita is a "supercharged" iPod Touch.

And since this post is super boring with tech talk I'm going to leave this link to Mark Cerny almost blowing the whistle on PS4 a couple months ago. I thought that was pretty funny.

I didn't, actually. I've been seeing them everywhere around $40-50 lately. So MSRP of $65, then? :)

I have four controllers for all my systems, but damn I hate buying them. Happy that my Wii controllers will carry over, assuming I do indeed buy a Wii U.

For Vita they set a hard internal price limit of 250. I would imagine they'd do the same for PS4 at 400, so yeah, I'm with Mike. 360 started at $399 too, didn't it?

For the controller preference thing, totally agree. I can suck a more convincing argument out of my thumb than I've heard so far in an instant: if someone stands, they usually balance their weight on one leg. Similarly, it would be more comfortable to lean the controller in the left hand and hold the controller while the right hand can then move more freely and apply more pressure pressing the face buttons.

Sounds convincing, right?

But give me a DS3 anyday. There is definitely some room for improvement though. Triggers on 360 controller and the analog sticks are definitely better.

I was recommended this podcast and this latest first episode was my first one.

The first 10 minutes were great. It hooked me on listening to another one.

What I liked is that the different hosts don't automatically agree with each other when someone makes a point, while still keeping it jovial.

Fuck time gating. I don't care how good a game supposedly is I'm done with em.

Great Corky reference. I'm finding that as I get older fewer and fewer people on the internet get it, which makes me sad. Especially since there isn't really a contemporary replacement for the reference.

I like how Finn, after getting a few laughs from "oh no," proceeds to say it over and over and over again until it's not funny anymore

Just like his father Mr. Wayne

I forgot to say how awesome Phil's Genesis music impression was a couple shows ago. I listened to it like 4 times, haha.
Thanks! I was pretty pleased with that my own self.

Haha you guys really don't like Polygon.

I don't think that's the case at all - I think Polygon is one of the only sites I actually go to regularly anymore (the rest are mostly in RSS feeds). I disagree with this particular decision and how their living reviews have been handled thus far.
