The polarizing reactions to My Little Pony

I suspect that it might have something to do with the ponies themselves being posted on the internet with wild abandon, regardless of relevance. Its not a problem on GAF, but I've seen a number of forums in which threads were consumed by pony stuff.

That kind of thing can obviously be irritating, and can result in negative responses to just reading and seeing references to the damn things. It probably puts people off actually wanting to watch an episode.

Imagine if Warhammer 40k fans started posting images of Space Marines and Imperial Terminators in threads and discussions that had no relevance to the images, under the justification of meme. It would surely result in negative responses to the awesomeness that are Space Marines, and would probably disuade people from wanting to know any more about this whole Imperium of Man business. People could even become quite hostile to the various random images of The God Emperor's of Man's finest.

And now I've made it relevant I can post the image.

*snip*
Finally a decent response! I'm in complete agreement with this, seeing all of these images posted is getting really tiresome and downright boring. GAF had about a couple of weeks of this happening before it was stopped, but ever other forum is filled with this.

Even once you finally see the show and see the reaction images and gifs in action, it makes it all underwhelming to me. The show isn't particularly memorable or fantastic enough to warrant the use of those images or making it the theme of your avatar/signature on your favorite forum.

Avatar is hundreds of times better, which is why I'm curious it doesn't get a similar fan reaction.
Because Avatar isn't polarising. Nearly everybody who's seen the show likes it, and those who don't can at least acknowledge the value of the series, just admit it's not their cup of tea.

Ponie people feel they need to defend themselves and therefore they bring it up at every opportunity, annoying the shit out of everybody else.

On topic, I don't think the show is quite as polarizing as you say, it's just that anyone only ever notices the extremes. Like, I'm a fan of the show, I post in the |OT| occasionally, and I find some of the music videos and trailers amazing. (Obligatory example 1, and 2.) But I don't go around posting gifs in completely unrelated threads, visit sites like ED everyday, I totally don't get the characterizations of background ponies, etc. But I still love the show.

Like, Xbox Live has a ton of great people who are nice, not racist jerks, etc. But who do you notice? The loud ones. It's the same with everything. What annoys me more than the crazy fans posting gifs everywhere and going overboard all the time are the people who hate and bash the show with no reason. It's easy to get turned off the show without ever seeing it, I know I thought I'd hate the show at first. But that doesn't mean you have to attack the fans.

I avoided it for the longest time, too. I felt I should give it a chance. Just finished the last three episodes this past weekend. It's a real good show and I am looking forward to the next season.

I just enjoy the show. I try not to hype it when I'm not with other fans of the series other than an occasional mention now and then, and I make a conscious effort to not bring it up where it isn't accepted (hi GAF!).

It's a funny show which generally has a positive outlook on life, and that's a nice change from the usual crass humor you find in comedy shows these days. The awesome songs and writing have helped me with some darker parts in my life, and very few shows that I've found can put a smile on my face like this series can, hence the avatar I'm sporting at the moment.

Hahahahaha

HAHAHAHAHAHA

This'll be almost as good as the show itself.

For reference, Applejack totally deserves the dip.

most of the hate is thanks to the fans posting it all over neogaf when the show was released. that and lots of avatars as well. guess some neogaf members got overwhelmed and then ended up hating it.
The normal thing whenever something gets a very fanatical following. Just look at Community and Lost. It is sadly the truth.

Pony macros rarely get posted outside of pony threads, and when they do there's nothing different about them from the standard GET HYPE/FOR THE WIN gifs that are abundant in every internet community.

I will get bored if I attempt to watch the show, but I actually like most of the Pony related gifs. Maybe it's the colours or the animations, but most of the gifs are pretty cool.

I'm talking specifically about GAF. PonyGAF may have had a brief outbreak back when the show was getting popular around here, but they've been careful not to be too in your face.

That's not what I meant. I meant that Avatar has a huge fanbase, yet it doesn't get shit like fanmade games that look somewhat professional and all of this fancontent on the level of MLP. In terms of positive reactions, it just seems odd to me that MLP would have such a level of hype to it that something like Avatar never really had.

The only backlash Avatar got was from the shippings wars that occurred on boards.

Can you expect pony fans to vouch for the insanity that is the internet? r even the people out there who troll pony subjects? 90% of the time they're more into trolling than they are MLP and have just latched onto the most recent recognizable fad.

I'd much prefer if the sickos and freaks avoided stuff that I liked too, but then the entertainment industry would be nowhere.

correction, human ponies have been officially sanctioned, as long as they meet board guidelines.

Because if you watch Avatar, you are simply a nerd.

If you watch MLP, you are trying to be an ironic nerd.

I'm sure the show is good at what it is. The fan reaction is so full of overcompensating that it creates a schism. If it could just be a show for little girls that has some wider appeal then it wouldn't be the net-shitstain that it has become.

But the post-ironic tends to ruin anything it gets its hands on.

My Little Pony? People keep saying it's a show for little girls but I doubt any children actually watch this show - it's a little too condescending and cynical towards children to have that kind of appeal. Just like the show Invader Zim before it, which had a large following from the "hot topic" crowd, My Little Pony seems popular with the "internet meme" crowd. The types of people who do things like say the letters "L O L" out loud in real life, wear t-shirts with internet jokes printed on them and know what /b/ is and probably post on it regularly.

All niche products with a dedicated fanbase get some incredible things. The difference is that ponies insist on broadcasting it.

...

this is retarded

those are just the people who you associate with (by reading things on the internet) who watch the show

how many goddamn children do you regularly communicate with to make sure theyre not watching this show

its literally a show for little girls, i dont know why ponylovers try to argue so much against this

Not even trolls touch my little pony threads on certain other, larger, internet boards. Everybody is sick of that nonsense. I'm not saying that trolls don't use my little pony images to troll, I'm saying they are using them because they're also fans too. Annoying, macro-spamming fans.

We still get stupid Avatar reaction shots in half the threads. Nobody's safe.

Katara is a bitch that doesn't deserve the fucking Avatar

So the purge continues. Nice seeing the Pony fans coming out of woodworks; if you guys only stayed in Pony OT, there would be no problems. Yet the infestation, the direct pestilence, of your persistence on converting GAF into Pony land. I can't shake the feeling like..I don't know man. I just don't know.

I still love you guys though; you're kind of like Creepy GAF lite.

they argue against it because the show's creator posted that it wasn't for girls on her deviantART page

she says it's for everybody

The shipping is still what makes the fanbase so fun to be around when a new trailer airs.

You mean to say that trolls would't trawl the depths of MLP threads for pony subject matter because they know how many people hate it, and it's so provocative that it would only cause trouble if posted abusingly? So they wouldn't do it, you say? That they must be legitimate fans of the show, in order to troll post the show, because they want to annoy people and hurt the reputation of the subject matter by being obnoxious? Because they really like MLP? Just crazy fanatical about MLP? I don't buy it, mister.

Hey if you like little girl stuff and have reasons to justify your little girly girl tendencies like you think it has"great animation" its "funny!" and its "adorable" more power to ya. You should meet sonic fans. You have much in common.

I didn't realize making a reasonable post would result in such hatred, oh lawd. What a terrible post

Alright, it seems a bit strange, but in my experience with me and the trolls I know we're just so sick of the whole goddamned thing that it's not even worth trolling. It only makes us angry; like the our hate is only fueling the fire. But I'll admit that there are surely some crazed, brave,
foolish
men still going into those threads and saying "this is a show for little girls.

You win this time, internet.
