Yeah, my understanding is the Russian Orthodox Church can basically torpedo any council on the Orthodox side that would have to happen in order to mend the schism.

It's sad that they use this issue to inflate their own flagging importance on the world stage. That's what's really behind all this, organised religion desperately needs a bogeyman to puff out it's chest at to show it's still relevant. Without the huge acceptance of homosexuality in the developed world what else would they have to raise their hands up about; pre-marital sex, contraception? Nah, this is a much better target.

It also makes me physically sick how many conservatives and religious people use the word "family" throughout their bigotry as if gay people aren't part of families and don't have their own families. There's some real disgusting newspeak stuff going on here, especially from politicians who know exactly what they are saying and why.

Marriage is point #21, by the way. There's also anti-abortion and anti-euthanasia drivel in there, but the main point is that two monolithic organizations which managed not to talk each other for four times the time the current US government has existed are actually talking, which is indeed a big sign that they're not so monolithic anymore and are stepping up to change their place in the modern world.

Which will soon include the various human rights points, in all likeness. They're not really enshrined in doctrine, and churches are what believers want them to be.

Merely cautioned against. Can't even be bothered to preach and finger wag with words stronger than "cautioned", as if LGBT persons in Russia aren't victims of constant assault and harassment by church bannermen.
