The second page of this thread is so much better than the first page.

Anyway, some stuff I don't think has been mentioned:

That's your opinion.

Can we do ourselves a favour and not do the whole dickoff routine that includes:
-punk is dead looool
-70s punk is so much better than X0s punk
-This band sold out
-This band sucks
-This band isn't even punk...maybe ___punk, but not troo punk

I swear, all of the above are the kisses of death in any punk discussion.

Because, last I checked, punk wasn't about being exclusive.

Don't know if you're implying I said any of those things...because I didn't.

And yeah it's my opinion that The Ergs and Minutemen rock a million times harder than uh, some of the other bands mentioned in this fine thread. Sorry I guess? Didn't mean to bum you out.

I'm not implying that you said any of it, no, but stuff like that and stuff that's already been said have already started to slant the discussion.

Sorry if you felt I was pointing the gun directly at you. I'm just waving it in the air at this point, not at anyone in particular.

Some of my favorite punk acts include:

Hüsker Du
I don't know how to describe them, they're one of the first bands to mix pop-ish melodies into the hardcore punk sound, like louder ancestors of the Pixies or Nirvana.

La Polla Records
My favorite punk band ever, by far. Being angry never felt so good; I think they share some of the Dead Kennedys sound. They're from the Basque Country in Spain.

Bluttat
From Germany with love.

Rattus
The best non-metal band from Finland.

Massacre 68
Mexican cult band.

Madame Edwarda

Japanese goth/post punk. One of my new favorites.

Nice recommendations so far! I would love to find more bands from all countries in all languages.

Great band and song.
You can really hear their influences on bands like Against Me! in some sense. I find that most of the earlier AM! acoustic stuff really sounds like "Harp" by SLF.

EYEL1NER you should be able to buy the Koffin Kats CDs at any of their shows, and if you are in the states it's not TOO hard to catch them somewhere. Last year my boyfriend and I saw them about 5 or 6 times in just a few months, but I guess it helps that we live in the midwest where they are from as well. They are overseas right now but have a pretty extensive tour (they are ALWAYS on tour it seems) planned over here starting next month I think. Unfortunatly I don't think I can make any of the shows they have set up right now, but I bet they will add some that will work for me. Good luck getting those CDs and see them live if you haven't cause they give an awesome show.
I'll keep that in mind. I'll be out of the military in a year and might be moving back home to the midwest, so I'll try to keep an ear to the ground in the future. I wanted to go home back in the fall of last year and the dates I was looking at, The Nekromantix would have been playing right after I left town. That one bummed me out, but I ended up not going anyway.

Edit: And with that said, OH MY GOD THEY ARE PLAYING CHARLESTON, NC NEXT MONTH!!!
I need to go to that....

So can you make an a thread and just declare it an official |OT| thread? because I'd like to make a Jazz-Fusion/Jazzrock thread! Even if just two people read it!

Folk punk is pretty fun and i don't think these two bands have been posted yet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JbEGQLmOzo This Bike is a pipe bomb and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOdFl-6E0UQ Defiance, Ohio.
Folk punk! Andrew Jackson Jihad! Apologies, I Have None! Though the latter have started moving away from folk punk into a more pop-punk area, but it's all still good. In fact, I probably prefer where they're going, Sat In Vicky Park is an amazing song.

Blah blah....a lotof the bands already listed yadda yadda.....

When I was running my website I did snag an interview with Jesse Michaels.Ended up talking to him for like 90 minutes in the basement of Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, MI. Really great memory to have.

It was the Plea For Peace Tour in I guess 2003. It was just supposed to be me but Jesse took all my friends down there as well and hung out. One by one they started to spread out. One guy was a big Lawrence Arms fan and caught up with them, my brother-in-law ended up backstage drinking with The Bouncing Souls with another friend, who was eventually kicked out by some dickhead from Anti-Flag. It was a good evening.

Hey, just heard there's a new Flogging Molly album in May! Fuckin awesome. Second favorite punk band after BR. Maybe second favorite band period... tough call.

Just listened to 'Don't Shut 'Em Down'. Sounded... too produced. Too clean if that makes any sense. I guess it doesn't really matter because they sound great live.

One of my friends is really into Andrew Jackson Jihad, but I've never really given it a shot. I'll try queuing some up and give it a proper listen.

Shit I like:

Ceremony
Sabertooth Zombie
Black Flag
Minor Threat
Misfits
Red Handed
Against Me!
The Clash
The Ramones
Green Day(I mostly listen to pre Dookie stuff)
Leftover Crack/Choking Victim/Star Fucking Hipsters
Static Thought
Have Heart

High school for me was all about punk. Had jackets with patches all over them and went to Gilman shows every damn weekend. What a fucking great time.

Turbonegro - Apocalypse Dudes

A fucking classic if you ask me, the ultimate party punk rock album!

Absolutely. Turbonegro was my first "real" concert, that I went to with a friend. It was amazing, really sad that soon after Euroboy was ill for quite a while after. Now waiting for them to tour the US again.

You'll be waiting a long time then, as Turbonegro is no more :(

In memory of Turbonegro, hail to the Prince of the Rodeo

Fuck it, time for Turbonegro and beer. I got a Selfdestructo Bust!

WHAAT?! :C I saw they played at a festival last year, what happened?

I'm not 100% on all the details, but Hank announced last year that he was out of the band, so the other guys basically said 'yeah, well, Turbo's over, we're packing it up', and Hank went on to say something like 'I didn't mean I quit the band, I just wanted time off to do some other stuff' (he played Cornelis Vreeswijk in a recent biopic). Hank did make some strange statements before the band broke up though, like how letting homosexuals marry would possibly lead to letting sheepshaggers marry sheep (he did apologize for this one though), and going on about how the Church of Scientology helped him get clean from his drug abuse.

He's got a new supergroup going, but it just won't be the same as Turbonegro :(

I'm sure most of these have been posted but here are some of my favs:

Bad Brains
Minor Threat
The Clash
Minutemen
Crass
Conflict
Gang of Four
Wire
Blitz
Misfits
Rancid
Opivy
Leftover Crack
Bad Religion
Dead Kennedys
Subhumans
Citizen Fish
Skoidats
Zombie Ghost Train
Tiger Army
Social Distortion
Descendents
The Adicts
etc..

Glad you mentioned that; it prompted me to check if they're touring. They're in my area in three weeks. :D

Another involving Tomas Kalnoky is spun gold. Not strictly punk rock, but ska punk so it will have to find a home here.

I used to be quite the punk back in the day but my tastes have varied as of late. I still listen to some of the best stuff though: Refused, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, early Against Me!, Propagandhi, etc.

Funny you mentioned this as I was listening to 500 Channels just the other day for the first time in years. So good.

Also put on Turbonegro's Age of Pamparius in my car to pay tribute.

edit: Yup JLG-, we would be friends. Especially considering the current avatar.

I think I was at that show. Was that the year with The (International) Noise Conspiracy, where Dennis Lyxzen was hanging upside down from the balcony?

I don't know if they count since I've heard people refer to them as "proto-punk" but New York Dolls is the band that really kick-started my love for punk rock. In addition to The Stooges, MC5 and that first Modern Lovers record.

I think the "proto" tag is kind of silly, so hopefully those listed are relevant to this thread.

I actually saw New York Dolls live last year. Was a pretty good show, though was sorely missing Johnny Thunders (RIP) and his hair.

Yea, that's why I didn't try to define punk in the OP because of all the awesome subgenres which can be completely different sounds from one another. If you think it fits, mention it!

I was listening to Fugazi's Red Medicine today. Fucking awesome album. It's pretty rare that a punk band can jam, but I always love the instrumental Fugazi tracks.

I could go on for pages and pages of all the bands I discovered in my record store/random P2P files journeys in high school but I'll just put this here:

One of the most underrated bands ever.

I find it really funny that my Google search of that brought up Zounds Hearing Aids!

Never heard of them before and so far I really like them! They have a little Rockabilly in them from my initial impressions. Thank you!

Naw let's not get into post-punk territory...It's my favorite genre, but it really is quite different. Although there are some bands that straddled the line like The Wire and Gang of Four.

In addition to Wire and GoF, I'd add Joy Division & Bauhaus for bands that could (and did) deliver punk intensity, and so much more.

I suppose it's about the time that I introduce the song that 'hooked' me. There were so many bands that I discovered after the fact and some that I knew about going in...

The Ramones? Awesome.
Sex Pistols? Fantastic.

But they were not what drew me into punk. At the time I was listening to Anthrax and Black Sabbath. Then I heard this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiprAOKkYW0

After that, I broadened my horizons, and it's been a glorious journey. Some I like... some I don't. Doesn't matter.

Folk punk is one of my favorite genres. Check out The Riot Before, The New Dress, Attack In Black and Fake Problems.

My favorite musician in the world, however, is Aaron Scott. He has the best voice in contemporary punk I've heard. He was the singer of Marathon, a super fucking smart melodic punk band which everybody who likes Bad Religion should give a listen to. Sadly, they broke up in 2006, but Aaron Scott continued to write folk punk music under the moniker Attica! Attica!. His second album on Bandcamp is priced for pay what you want, so there's no reason why you shouldn't have it. Just click on the album cover; you won't regret it.

more new wave than punk imo.

Rudimentary Peni is another band from that scene that deserves attention.
