Because, last I checked, punk wasn't about being exclusive.

Some of my favorite punk acts include:

Hüsker Du
I don't know how to describe them, they're one of the first bands to mix pop-ish melodies into the hardcore punk sound, like louder ancestors of the Pixies or Nirvana.

La Polla Records
My favorite punk band ever, by far. Being angry never felt so good; I think they share some of the Dead Kennedys sound. They're from the Basque Country in Spain.

The best non-metal band from Finland.

Massacre 68
Mexican cult band.

Madame Edwarda

Japanese goth/post punk. One of my new favorites.

Nice recommendations so far! I would love to find more bands from all countries in all languages.

Great band and song.

You can really hear their influences on bands like Against Me! in some sense. I find that most of the earlier AM! acoustic stuff really sounds like "Harp" by SLF.

EYEL1NER you should be able to buy the Koffin Kats CDs at any of their shows, and if you are in the states it's not TOO hard to catch them somewhere. Last year my boyfriend and I saw them about 5 or 6 times in just a few months, but I guess it helps that we live in the midwest where they are from as well. They are overseas right now but have a pretty extensive tour (they are ALWAYS on tour it seems) planned over here starting next month I think. Unfortunatly I don't think I can make any of the shows they have set up right now, but I bet they will add some that will work for me. Good luck getting those CDs and see them live if you haven't cause they give an awesome show.

I'll keep that in mind. I'll be out of the military in a year and might be moving back home to the midwest, so I'll try to keep an ear to the ground in the future. I wanted to go home back in the fall of last year and the dates I was looking at, The Nekromantix would have been playing right after I left town. That one bummed me out, but I ended up not going anyway.

Edit: And with that said, OH MY GOD THEY ARE PLAYING CHARLESTON, NC NEXT MONTH!!!

Folk punk! Andrew Jackson Jihad! Apologies, I Have None! Though the latter have started moving away from folk punk into a more pop-punk area, but it's all still good. In fact, I probably prefer where they're going, Sat In Vicky Park is an amazing song.

When I was running my website I did snag an interview with Jesse Michaels.Ended up talking to him for like 90 minutes in the basement of Clutch Cargo's in Pontiac, MI. Really great memory to have.

It was the Plea For Peace Tour in I guess 2003. It was just supposed to be me but Jesse took all my friends down there as well and hung out. One by one they started to spread out. One guy was a big Lawrence Arms fan and caught up with them, my brother-in-law ended up backstage drinking with The Bouncing Souls with another friend, who was eventually kicked out by some dickhead from Anti-Flag. It was a good evening.

Absolutely. Turbonegro was my first "real" concert, that I went to with a friend. It was amazing, really sad that soon after Euroboy was ill for quite a while after. Now waiting for them to tour the US again.

I'm not 100% on all the details, but Hank announced last year that he was out of the band, so the other guys basically said 'yeah, well, Turbo's over, we're packing it up', and Hank went on to say something like 'I didn't mean I quit the band, I just wanted time off to do some other stuff' (he played Cornelis Vreeswijk in a recent biopic). Hank did make some strange statements before the band broke up though, like how letting homosexuals marry would possibly lead to letting sheepshaggers marry sheep (he did apologize for this one though), and going on about how the Church of Scientology helped him get clean from his drug abuse.

He's got a new supergroup going, but it just won't be the same as Turbonegro

I used to be quite the punk back in the day but my tastes have varied as of late. I still listen to some of the best stuff though: Refused, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, early Against Me!, Propagandhi, etc.

I don't know if they count since I've heard people refer to them as "proto-punk" but New York Dolls is the band that really kick-started my love for punk rock. In addition to The Stooges, MC5 and that first Modern Lovers record.

I think the "proto" tag is kind of silly, so hopefully those listed are relevant to this thread.

I actually saw New York Dolls live last year. Was a pretty good show, though was sorely missing Johnny Thunders (RIP) and his hair.

Yea, that's why I didn't try to define punk in the OP because of all the awesome subgenres which can be completely different sounds from one another. If you think it fits, mention it!

I suppose it's about the time that I introduce the song that 'hooked' me. There were so many bands that I discovered after the fact and some that I knew about going in...

The Ramones? Awesome.
Sex Pistols? Fantastic.

But they were not what drew me into punk. At the time I was listening to Anthrax and Black Sabbath. Then I heard this:

My favorite musician in the world, however, is Aaron Scott. He has the best voice in contemporary punk I've heard. He was the singer of Marathon, a super fucking smart melodic punk band which everybody who likes Bad Religion should give a listen to. Sadly, they broke up in 2006, but Aaron Scott continued to write folk punk music under the moniker Attica! Attica!. His second album on Bandcamp is priced for pay what you want, so there's no reason why you shouldn't have it. Just click on the album cover; you won't regret it.
