The REAL reason Zelda was delayed

Actually, I didn't... but would be interested in hearing about that...

Basically, when Miyamoto showed Yamauchi Yoshi's Island for the first time, a game that he had been laboring over for two-three years, the big boss was less than impressed. Yamamuch then pointed towards Donkey Kong Country, which was in mid development ,and which he was totally enamored with, stating that it was the direction that they should be going., And then he told Miyamoto to make YI less cartoony. Feeling a bit insulted, he told his team to make it even more child-like.

But by the time it was all said and done, like veen mentioned, it was past the point of serious interest for most, perhaps even Yamauchi, hence why he probably let it pass by despite his objections to the art style. Or maybe he was impressed by being proven wrong.

Miyamoto has actually been quoted as saying, something to the effect that, Donkey Kong County is simply proof that many people will often play a game just because of pretty graphics, and be fooled into thinking that might possibly good, even when its clearly not. And as far as I know, that's the only time that the normally very upbeat and positive guy has ever been negative towards a specific game.

So I wouldn't say it was a total redesign when it came to gameplay, just the graphics.

I think it was because of DKC's look (OMG TEH ACM!!11) that Miyamoto wanted Yoshi's Island to stick out, so they redid it with the handdrawn or whatever look.

True, but DKC was pushed far harder by Nintendo's marketing department than Yoshi's Island.

Personally, I think Yoshi's Island has aged better than DKC. ACM and Rare's designs are rather cold and were merely a fad with all things considered.

u mean the PSP and its movies? Cause I dont see one damn game worth getting yet.... And since the PSP wasnt even at E3 (well it was, but it was like in a 3ft section of the booth), there were no good games there either.

DS will have no worries this christmas.
Do you really think that a platform's game selection has anything to do with holiday sales? It's important for the rest of the year, but most people buying hardware during the holidays are clueless parents of clueless kids who just want something. To them, Death Jr is a killer app.

His quote was as follows, "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good."

I'd rather play Donkey Kong Country than Yoshi's Island. It's just more fun.

Agreed. Miyamoto was probably just pissed because DKC sold a helluva lot more than Yoshi's Island.

Actually, I think the OP has a point. Zelda would have sold well on it's own if it was as good as WW. It'd get more points though solely cause of the realistic graphics.

Also, I don't think Nintendo wanted Zelda to cannabilize the DS's Mario Kart sales either.

Two different platforms... The wouldn't even affect one another.

That shouldn't matter. Having too many important titles released around the same time will cannibalize each others sales.

This theory seems a bit farfetched for me. I understand the logic behind setting the DS in the spotlight this holiday, at least for the western markets (although I think this might hurt Nintendo more than benefit in the end in financial terms).
But why would Nintendo delay the release in Japan, where the DS is outselling the PSP 40,000:20,000 and the Cube sells 2,000-3,000 units weekly (as opposed to the US, where both the DS and the Cube sell somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 a month) ?
