The redhead and the dinosaurs: A Dino Crisis LTTP Thread

fihakfK.jpg

My first real thread with some meat and in turn my first LTTP so forgive me if something seems off or what not.

So I finally played and finished Dino Crisis over the passed few weeks. Yes, it was primarily Jawmuncher's idea at first but, it was also a sudden realization that I hadn't played a lot of those early PS1 era survival horror games. I was born in 1991 so at the time I was kinda too young for them, even barring the blood and stuff but the complexity of some of the puzzles in those games. I got most of that experience watching my big brother play but was kind of scared of the zombies in Resident Evil. That said I am glad I finally got around doing this.

My playthrough was:
Done on the PC version of Dino Crisis. Other than having extra modes unlocked at the start and looking slightly better than the PS1 version (probably the same as the Dreamcast version) it is the same game.

Played on Normal and took my about 9 hours in game time but I probably spent 12 hours playing this game.

Basic premise is you are in control of Regina, who is part of a special task force sent to investigate a mysterious island facility. However what awaits them is not something they could have planned for.

Before I get into the game itself though I kinda want to point out some things I learned playing one of these Survival Horror games from this era.

I get why people complain about tank controls now.

A year ago I wouldn't have really understood why people didn't like them so much. I played older RE games later in life but, not for long and only in passing so I didn't have time to really let it set in. However finishing this game I get the gripes people have with them. Especially after you even get used to them you may still flub a little. Up being forward in every situation possible is theory makes sense but, ones brain doesn't exactly want to correspond with that onto a controller. Can't say I miss them.

Shifting through multiple static camera angles.

This was something that I noticed and actually bugged me as a kid, even when I wasn't playing these kinds of games. It used to drive me insane that you couldn't just have had a camera follow you. Probably because at that point I was used to Mario 64 or something, since my older brother didn't play the RE games until later. This time though going through Dino Crisis it isn't really that bad. It's something that I got used to fairly quick.

Items and notes, oh man the notes. Oh and passcodes and keys

I always knew about items, and mainly ammo in early RE games was scarce and you would want to avoid combat if possible. This is no different in Dino Crisis. God though notes. Look I like the notes actually, they give you some backstory for a lot of things in game but, them combined with actual pertinent information you need to solve puzzles kinda what drove me up the wall at times in this game. There was probably 8 or 9 times where I got through a puzzle or got a crap load of keys and got to something that said I needed a passcode, that was more than likely written down a note 3 hallways back. Ugh.

Oh right the game.

As for the game itself though I like it, a lot more than I expected to. There is very few characters that even talk in the game that it feels like you are alone at times, despite being in contact with the rest of your team on the island. You have your typical guns in this game pistols, shotguns etc. At first it feels like your standard affair but, when you meet your first dinosaur. Man, it's something fierce. You shoot at it and it doesn't drop. You realize you will have to expense a good chunk of ammo with your starting pistol to kill it so your only choice is to run away. Running away from dinosaurs is what gives Dino Crisis it's sense of urgency, especially later in the game when you face some serious dinosaurs that can combo you to death. Before fast zombies were I guess a thing you had to worry about these fast ass dinosaurs. So yeah try to avoid fighting if you can!

If you played RE1 or 2 before DC, you will be used to the shooting as it is the hold to aim and confirm to fire so that isn't any different. I am not sure how many more puzzles DC has than the first 2 RE games (I assume around the same) but, there are a fair number of them I say. Some of them are a bit more annoying than others but for the most part the puzzles all make sense and were pretty satisfying when you solved them.

So yeah Dino Crisis and me playing more of these earlier survival horror games to completion. This was quite a journey through this game to be honest. Despite my gripes I seemed to have about, well the genre itself at the beginning of this post I really did enjoy Dino Crisis. Regina is a great character and has kind of a smartass and snarky personality to her that I really like. Rick reminds me of another character that I can't quite think of. Gail is alright, I liked him near the end more than I did at the start. The soundtrack when it gets serious or super fast really sets the mood, and of course the save room music is chill as all hell.

If you liked RE and didn't play Dino Crisis 1 back in the day because you said "Oh it's just RE, with Dinosaurs." I say you give it another chance. It may not be completely different from RE 1, 2 or 3 but I think it's for sure fresh enough that you will get an enjoyable experience out of it.

Soon...Dino Crisis 2, which I hear is very different!

I really hope this post is okay, ha.

Glad you came to enjoy it after your play through. Dino Crisis is a game I hope more and more people play. Especially considering the $1 sale it has been on multiple times in NA on PSN. It's a shame Capcom hasn't done anything with these DC or RE PC ports. Even a quick rerelease would be fine so long as the price reflects them.

With that said I agree on your points. While in a sense it can be seen as resident evil with dinosaurs, the added mechanics really help set it apart when you really compare the two. Dino Crisis is definitely a worthwhile game in the survival horror genre and stands right up there with the best of them.

I remember I got Dino Crisis and the Prima strategy guide as a birthday present a long time ago (thanks Dad!). I absolutely loved it. And while some may say it's RE with dinosaurs, I remember being impressed by how the dinosaurs worked. It was WAY different than zombies. They were far more aggressive and way more efficient than a stumbling zombie.

Better way to put it: Zombies in RE were based on proximity. If you got up close, they would lunge, bite, etc. But the Raptors in Dino Crisis would bee-line towards you, and give chase. That made for an intense scare and an excellent game.

One day Capcom will wake up and put them on Steam or something.
Or the pipe dream of HD versions.

If 2 really is as different of beast though like you have told me before I want to see how that will play when I get to it.

Yeah that's the thing. The dinosaurs are also a lot more faster acting. A zombie and a dinosaur will see you about at the same speed but Dinosaurs are just so damn fast and are so much more persistent it isn't even funny.

All I ever think about from Dino Crisis is the sneaking suit with the leather granny panties over them. It still makes me feel weird. I know it's probably like a leotard one piece but the belt separates the top from the bottom.

Haha yeah, Regina's clothing on her model looks a bit funny.

This was fun to hear how a younger gamer enjoys one of my favourite games of all time! I always found the game more different from just a RE game with dinosaurs too, fans of the genre and especially RE really should give it a go. If the popularity of the recent RE Remake HD has proven anything it's that slower paced survival horror games still have a place in the gaming industry.

I would love Capcom to remake this game in some form!

I've always been interested in playing the Dino Crisis games, though I never have.

To be honest, the title of the thread made me think of Horizon: Zero Dawn, lol.

Thanks! I like the slower survival horror games in general but, controls at times kinda drove me away. Glad I went through with Dino Crisis though. I hope Capcom does something with it!

Give it a shot! You might like them. Funny enough Horizon was my favorite game of E3 this year.

Alas, I don't have a system to play them on. I gave my gf my old PS3 which she's turned into a Netflix machine, lol.

I hope Sony allows for PS1 emulation one day.

If Capcom keeps the series in slumber, that's going to be the first thing people think of when they hear Red Head and Dinosaurs.

The first Dino Crisis is a masterpiece.

Two is great. A little bit different but still great.

Three is absolute garbage. Understandable that Capcom didn't wanna make more after this.

But I feel now is the time to get stuff done and make another one, now that sound design has evolved to something amazing.

A Dino Crisis with the sound design of Alien Isolation would be terrifying.

One Raptor that stalks you through the jungle or an old facility.

T-rex wouldn't work that well since you can hear it a mile away approaching.

Raptors are sneaky as fuck. Catch you off guard.

Give me Dino Crisis.

Imagine me back in 1999. I was a completely addicted of Resident Evil and loved Dinosaurs.
This game was like a dream come true. Still have my PSone copy in the shelf. :)

I wish Capcom would bring the series back in one form or another....

Well yeah, an action sequence would work, would make my heart race like a motherfucker.
Absolutely, but what I'd love to see most are some suspense scene with the T-Rex. Have you seen Jurassic World? You know the scene where they hide under cars and shit from the Indominus Rex? I think that would translate greatly into a game. Imagine you have to cross an area the T-Rex is roaming and constantly have to try to stay out of sight... Man, that would be so fucking amazing.

It seems so obvious that you could make such a great dinosaur game these games, I'm baffled that no has done it so far. What is wrong with devs and pubs? Don't you want that moneyz?

I'd love to see a hiding scene, but I'll point out the scene you posted from Jurassic Park is kind of re-created for the final boss battle in the original Dino Crisis... Kind of.

There's two different versions of the final boss fight depending on which ending you're going for,but they're both pretty much the same mechanically. The T-Rex is rapidly approaching you at ridiculous speeds as you have to shoot it to make it stay the fuck away from you for a small bit.

Given this is also pretty much the most ridiculous part of the game, especially the water variant where he looks like some speed-surfing T-Rex able to keep up with how fast you're going. XD;

I wasn't too interested in Alien Isolation when it came out mainly because of how it moved and the Alien AI but, thinking about it now that game does do a great job of making you feel vulnerable. Dino Crisis did induce a good amount of panic in me when one of the dinos would pop into the room randomly or a scripted trigger happened. Or later in the game when they start chasing you through doors, Jesus Christ. Even DC with better sound would probably mess with me. Sound is what get's me the most in video games in terms of catching me off guard so sure, I am for that.

I would bet that DC has more puzzles than all of RE 1, 2, and 3 combined. I like to call it Puzzle Crisis. You spend far more time solving puzzles than you do fighting/avoiding dinosaurs.

One of Mikami's best, and IMO Capcom's strongest survival title until REmake. Story is mostly window dressing but the fun quips from the small cast help to flesh out the B-horror feel. Big shame that the franchise ended on a low note.

Yeah I wasn't sure as I haven't played the early RE games as extensively but, I figured DC probably had more puzzles.

Maybe it doesn't have to!
