The Return of ABC's 'The Mole': Official 2008 Season Thread

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
After a slow start, the last two episodes were awesome.
Welcome back, Mole.

It's a shame it's doing so poorly :( My buddy who works in TV said they are considering pulling it! Bullshit! Why do people not watch this show? It's the best "reality/gameshow" on the market right now, period.

Is it too 'smart' for Avg Joe?

I don't think ABC will be pulling the show - they could move it to Fridays and burn off the remaining episodes a lot easier than that. But yes, the ratings have been fairly atrocious, won't lie.

They still haven't got away from the old problem of requiring people to watch every week to get the full benefit from the show. Sure, you can dip in and out and just watch random tasks, but you'll never be able to work out who the mole is. And I just can't imagine that there are too many people willing to invest that much time into a reality gameshow.

Saying that though, we're 3 episodes into a run of 10 so they can easily burn off the rest of the episodes if they needed to.

As for who the mole is, then it has to be Clay, surely? :)

As a big fan of the first two seasons (Celebrity Mole was mostly crap though), I've really enjoyed this season. It seems like they're playing the drama up a bit more than in the past (for ratings perhaps?) but otherwise it still seems very high quality. The focus is rightly still on the game first and foremost. It'd be disappointing if it disappears again due to low ratings though.

And it seems pretty hard to tell at this point. Way too many players seem to be playing an "honest game" (trying their hardest to get money in the pot) so it's hard to filter out who's acting up, who legitimately messed up, and who is the mole?

Craig and Clay are my top suspects.
Craig talked in the last episode, didn't he? But then in the second mission he was kind of the hero for finding the clothes at the laundromat.

Clay is just so suspicious. He was not going to give up that exemption and he backed out of the clothes mission last episode.

Nicole is soooo not the mole. She makes it so obvious to everyone that she tries to be the bitch and tries to lose money on purpose. So stupid.

And is it really doing poorly? That sucks. I would hope it would do well coming after The Bachelorette. Pulling in the reality show people.

I think it's safe to say that unless Mark is moonlighting as a High School Drama teacher he isn't the Mole, although that meltdown was almost so far gone that I'd call it as an act.

And yeah, I've been suspicious of Victoria's awful, horrible acting since Day One, and that she's not the Mole kind of shocks me. But it's a good shock: this game should shock you a little, and I thought this episode had a lot of good gameplay and strategy along with less of last week's petty bickering.

Shame Victoria went this week. Still thinking it's Clay, for no better reason than the way the show producers have tried to hide him from the spotlight more than anyone else.

I'd like Mark to win, but predict that Kristen and Paul will make it down to the final 3, which will probably mean they'll both get eliminated next week.

wow. she was in my top 3 to be the mole. now I'll have to pick a new one.

I still think craig is a good candidate for being the mole.

another week goes by and I'm still holding to this.
It could very well be. He has been extremely suspicious in the last couple of weeks. He basically caused everyone not to do that mission.

I've said it all along, the fat guy is the mole. He really acted suspicious today. The producers obviously told him to say "exemption" at the breakfast table. And an over the top nice guy like that doesn't go to extreme douchebag in a day.

Bullshit. 3 fucking hours? Why does the Bachelorette need that much time? Jesus... -.-

Also, my mom watches this shit... :p

My top two picks for the mole are Craig and Clay.

Craig was acting a bit suspicious last episode. Oh and another thing, When Jon first passed out the notebooks, the camera focused on the number 11, and if my memory serves correct, Craig was the 11th person introduced (or the 11th person to do the first mission, I forget which one). I think the number 11 is a clue. It's a bit far fetched, but Season 1 did have several clues for the viewers at home to pick up on, so I'm guessing the same could be true for this season. Oh, and Clay wore the number 11 on his soccer jersey during the second episode.

Perhaps I'm just looking too much into things and grasping on straws.

Oh yea, and this is my first post on GAF!

Yeah, he didn't even try and act nervous.
There's still always the chance of a shock reveal that Mark is the mole, but every prediction I've made so far has sucked so this won't be any different.

It sucks that my original and second picks (victoria and clay) left so early. I didn't want to believe that craig was the mole, but now it seems to obvious.

I should watch this. I loved the first season. Sadly, I'm late to the party. I'll watch next week's, but will probably get confused. Until, next season I guess. Should be more on top of these things. :lol

such bullshit that they're making us wait!

I'm still positive it's Mark.
They've done this every season. :p

I think I'll download the series and catch up.
It's been pretty good. Tonight's episode was awesome.

Did anyone catch a backwards message right before a commercial (may have been the second)? It sounded like one.

Never watched it before this year.

Yeah, it's for the best: let's the reunion show have a bit more interest as they don't know who won yet, so they can get in on the game and it results in some great stuff.

Thought that the final tasks could have been better, and am pretty convinced that it's Craig at this point as well. Still, loved Jon and Nicole's phone conversations - totally reminded me of Anderson Cooper, no question.

Jon seemed a lot more comfortable in the last two episodes. I also loved the phone conversation and the way he talked in a baby voice to the contestants last episode.

I haven't seen the last episode of the first or second season in a while, but I remember the last missions being nearly identical and a lot cool than this year.

Season One's was just plain stunning - it was the whole Hotel puzzle where each person was locked in their room with a strange assortment of objects that would help the other escape as long as they all figured it out.

Season Two, however, had no such brilliance as far as I can remember, but I do know that its final challenge very closely mirrored the one we saw here with the race for the dossier. But with Season Two not on DVD, I can't say for sure.

 i didn't know the first season/celebrity mole was on DVD. I'll probably get them.

Yeah - Season One is awesome on DVD, and while far inferior the celebrity version is at least worth the low asking price.

Can't complain at $15. Is there much behind the scenes stuff on the dvd about how they made the show?

My DVDs are an hour away right now, but if memory serves correctly...no. Sadly.

That's a shame. The amount of planning and organisation that went into each task (and the show as a whole) must have been phenomenal, it would have been nice to have got an insight into that.
Maybe they'll fix that with the 2008 season DVD release? :D

That game was AMAZING. Quality reality television right there.

Its been so long, but didn't the
mole figure it out? She looked out her hotel room and noticed some numbers or something on another building. And obviously the producers told her how to solve that puzzle.

Okay, so I was right. There is definitely a backwards message before the first commercial (you can watch it here on ABC.com). I tried recording it (the only way I could do it is record it on my cellphone and send it to my computer). I reversed it and slowed it down and what I hear is 'Craig _____ mole'. I could just be hearing what I want to hear becuase its very hard to make it out, but I think I definitely hear mole as the last word. The second word isn't 'is' it sounds longer and I though it started with a 'D'. (it sounds like 'daring' to me.)

Can anyone else record it (it's right before it cuts to commercial for the first time, and I mean RIGHT before).

I think it was something to that extent. I barely remember anything about the first season (that was by far the most memorable challenge though).
Wasn't there a truck outside their window or something?

psh, I'm still holding to my original prediction.

It's Mark.
I'm with you. Mark's been my #1 ever since the whole journal burning episode. Just seemed like an excuse to give him a sympathetic slant.
He initially comes off as genuine, but I think his sabotage is more subtle.

Also, his over-performance on a few occasions could be an attempt to garner goodwill and throw suspicion off himself for a while. The coordinate scavenger hunt is a good example. Not only did he effortlessly run the treadmill for nearly an hour (I admit, old dude's a MACHINE), but he also managed to solve many of the chalkboard puzzles Nicole and Paul were having trouble with at the time.

Genuine ass-kickery, or devious mole tactics? I'm just preparing for my absolute shock when I find out he's NOT the mole...

Thew Mole knew the solution all along, and did of course slowly start figuring it out to keep from being awful at it. But the rest of the game was them poking and prodding at the other two to stop being awful at the game and actually put some money at the pot, but they proved really, really useless.

It's a great task, either way.
