I thought it was over when Wood hit the HR. I thought that was the nail in the coffin, for sure.

come to think of it, it would be hilarious poetic justice for the stros to go to the world series, and win it, after all the shit talked by cubs fans this year about how they were going to win the WS.

my only concern is even if they just go to the WS, I have a sinking feeling steinbrenner will offer Beltran a $40 million deal or something and ruin baseball even more than he already has. watching this ALCS is like deciding between bush and kerry - both are privileged, rich upper class people nobody can compete with. you just have to choose between the lesser of two evils (sox).

This might possibly have been the greatest day in Baseball History. The two games were amazing.

I think the only place it falls short is... the Astros game didn't finish before the Red Sox game. If that had happened, I would have shit myself.
Ireally started to think it was going to.

I was stuck at my grandparents watching the game. I wanted to leave and come home back when it was about 7 or so, but I figured the game would only run another hour or two, so I stayed to watch. Then I couldn't in good conscience leave with the way the game was going. How was I to know the game would be 6 FUCKING HOURS LONG?!

Oh well, I'm not really surprised we're going to game 6. I know I predicted the Yankees in 7, but I don't think the Sox get through game 6. Close games like the last two would swing the Yankees way if they were in Yankee Stadium as opposed to Fenway. And I can't believe Schilling is going to be 100% tomorrow night (assuming there is a game tomorrow night). I don't think it will be a repeat of game 1, but it won't be good enough to stop the Yankees offense at home either.

But there had to be some intangibles, too, that helped spur that 19-game winning streak at Minute Maid Park to end a season that was hardly "regular."

Gotta be the park, right? A mystique. Maybe former Native Americans who lived in these parts made long-ago incantations to Mother Earth bestowing blessings on those hallowed ground.

Nope. This is still a place of brick and mortar, natural grass, plastic and optic fibers, a sound system that'll knock your caps off, and infield dirt that has great drainage qualities but still isn't made of pixie dust.

There's one answer: It's the waves and waves of sound thundering like a Texas tsunami, high-volume voices of 42,000-plus fans cheering at nearly 116 decibels, their homer hankies whirling like helicopter blades.

Loud? A 747 taking off registers 108 decibels.

The Astros didn't have to ask for whom the 'bels tolled -- it was for them.

This is part of Houston's secret weapon, its home-field advantage. While the park's dimensions and quirks and "feel" is a comfortable experience for the players, and they can sleep in their own beds, they love the fans' backing.

I'm sorry. Aren't the Astros the team with two of the Yankees' top aces of the last several years?

Enjoy Beltran while you have him. Some owner out there will break the bank for him. If its not Steinbrenner it'll be the Dodger's new owner, or maybe the Angels owner, letting them move Anderson back to RF and getting rid of Guillen, who's now a problem.

He'll see $65M plus over a 5 year minimum deal. I'm betting on $16M a year for 7 years, Boras will bring him the big payday.

yes, and yet they aren't getting paid nearly as much.

PS I'm not an astros fan, I'm just a baseball fan. part of being a baseball fan is that you have to hate what's bad for the game. That means you hate the big money garbage that goes on with the yankees and sox.

Well, you have to take into account that fans here are willing to let McClaine raise ticket prices... myself, I'd pay $10 more per ticket if that keeps Beltran here. There is a website that lets you donate money to Beltran's favorite charity to attempt to keep him here. The fans are absolutely in love with Beltran (myself included).

WHATEVER IT TAKES

It's funny when people bitch about the Yankees or other high salary teams like the Mets. If New York gets beaten by the Angels or Marlins in the World Series those bitches don't say a word but if the Yankees crush them then the arguments start up again. You can't have it both ways people. Just because the Yanks have a high paid team doesn't guarantee they can crush the competition so quit the gay whining already.

When that happens it's a case of david beating goliath. It doesn't make the salary gap between teams any less of a problem, either, it just takes the attention off it for a little while.

Tell that to the Knicks and Rangers. They lose a lot WITH the highest salary. I think in the case of the Yankees, they are just better as an organization. So the problem isn't the high salary with most teams. It's the way they spend it and how competent their organization is (ie. managing, scouting, etc.). If the Yankees win the WS, it's because they were the better team. That's what it comes down to: whoever is the better team. Period.

The rest of the league is getting free money from the Yankees too. Curiously, no complaining there.

When's the last time a low salaried basketball or hockey David beat a well financed and managed Goliath?

53.3 million vs 64.8 million. Pistons don't sound like no David (salary-wise) I know. Plus they are over the salary cap.

Rasheed was the 3rd highest paid player in the league too.

I can't speak for the Knicks, but the reason they lose is because they never have any team chemistry AND because, since Richter dulled out, they haven't had good goaltending. So they're basically like the Yankees, minus any good pitchers. Hockey (and most other big sports) is much more a team game than baseball, you don't need that chemistry outside of maybe the pitcher and catcher, but if you don't have it in hockey, you're fucked.

It DOES give the Yankees (and Rangers and Knicks) a big advantage, and you've got to be fucking blind not to see that. But as you, and everyone else has mentioned, it doesn't GUARANTEE success. But if you use it right, which the Yankees have done, it DOES give them a big advantage. Simple as that.

I actually think the Yankees of the mid/late 90's were a better run organization. At that time the Yankees won with players like O'Neill, Tino, Brocius..etc.. Those were everyday players without superstar status, just a bunch of team players.

LeBron loves his girlfriend. There is no other woman in the world he’d rather have. The problem is, Dwyane’s not a woman.
Kiss my ass Poojuls..

"I thought he got lucky," Pujols said. "He got away with some pitches and they made some great plays. We hit a lot of balls hard right at people. They made a great play on Reggie. They made a great play on Edgar (Renteria). Woody hit the ball hard. Jimmy (Edmonds) hit the ball hard. It just went their way tonight.

Yea well Woody got lucky too douche and you didnt hit the ball hard once all game...grrr tip your hat you punk....CY BACKE ATTACKE ON YOU!

Bagwell got 7 years, 120 million. What's to say Beltran doesn't get something similar?
I'd say thats pretty accurate to what he'll see. The only real question is, what team is going to pay that or (maybe) more. If the Yanks make him priority number one they'll eclipse that $17M a year average without batting an eye. The Dodgers want a guy like Beltran and Bradley is quickly removing himself from their future plans. The Angels could be casting Guillen off, and they can't be happy with Anderson's D in CF, despite his injuries he was still bad. Thats three big money teams who won't be afraid to drop a $120 over 7 commitment to him, and then some.

I also wouldn't count out the Orioles. They want pitching but Angelos was also pretty pissed to miss out on Vlad last year, they want a difference making OF and CF is an open spot in their field. They might just try to wait for their pitching to develop, sign Beltran who'll definately be around long enough, and hope Tejada and Lopez can wait that long too.

The team out there last night was tired and lifeless.

While I hate to see the Yanks in a top 10 chokes list, if the Sox do win, they'll have earned it and you have to respect that.

Loaiza pitched great last night to be wasted. Everyone should be ashamed of themselves. They should be in the locker room, pointing at themselves in mirrors and making jokes about their own manhoods. Then they can spend some of the millions hiring therapists to help alleviate the pain they've caused themselves via self ridicule.

That 19 run outburts may have been a little much on the ego.

I almost forgot to mention something very important...

Seemingly everyone has lost sight of the fact the Yanks were pretty much expected to lose this series, and a home team in an LCS is suppossed to win. The Red Sox should have taken 3 at home, and the fact that we at least stole 1 is definitely a silver lining. Sure they couldn't close the door, but in reality, they did what they were suppossed to.

DAMAGE CONTROL! ALL HANDS ON DECK! DAMAGE CONTROL, AHOY!

Sure, damage control. That's what it is.

Considering I never once came on this board and said "Suck it down Sox", even after the 19 run thrashing.. I don't think that's warranted.

I'm sorry, that was completely out of line. How about...

WHO'S YOUR DADDY BECAUSE IT IS NOT THE YANKEES BECAUSE THE SOX WON TWO STRAIGHT AND PEDRO WAS ON THE MOUND SO GARY SHEFFIELD CAN TAKE HIS STEROIDS AND SUCK IT WHILE A-ROD WATCHES FROM HIS HOMOBILE ALSO I HEARD THAT MARIANO RIVERA IS A WOMAN MAYBE THAT EXPLAINS WHY HE THROWS LIKE A GIRL

Yankees supposed to lose this series? I wouldn't take it that far, most sports writers did claim that if there ever was a time the Sox could win this is it...but I never read where it was going to actually be an upset if the Yanks won.

And to say the Sox should have taken all 3 at home? So every time the Yanks had a 3 game series at Fenway this year you believe the Sox should be sweeping everytime? Cause that's what that amounts to. Don't even try to convince me the Yanks are happy to have "stolen" one at Fenway, they wanted this series closed out plain and simple.

It's the general expectation of the home field advantage. Home games are must wins, and road victories are what you strive to attain. I'm not talking Sox/Yanks, that's general baseball. Houston just did it.

The Yankees should have closed the door, I said that. I hoped for it like everyone else. I watched 400 hours of baseball hoping it would happen. However, a 4 game sweep was definitely not the expected outcome of the series. Anyone not expecting a challenge was delusional. The Yanks were not suppossed to go in to Boston and win out. It would have been nice, and after the thrashing many people expected it. Honestly, though, after watching these teams play each other all year, did you really expect this series not to go long?

Yes, coming in to the series, a lot of people said this would be the year the Sox would take it. Alot of talk was about a lousy Yankee pitching staff not being able to hold off the onslaught.

The fact that the Yanks are up 3-2 right now coming home to Yankee stadium shocks me, and I'm a Yankee fan.

I just don't understand the part where a team that won a 20 something game season series automatically becomes the Bad News Bears upon losing 3 straight. They're a great team and should be respected as such.

Hehe Houston...well any team that has lost 1 home game in the last like 25 is an anomaly :)

I also expected a 6/7 game series, which is what we are getting. Of course I didn't think it would come from a series that was 3-0 so that is a surprise.

I'd say .667 for home games and .500 on the road is about what you'd realistically aim for. That's about par for what the Sox did this season, and doing that in this series would mean a win of course.

Tim McCarver told me, baseball is a game about winning at home. If Tim said it, it must be true.

"The key to any good strikeout is getting the batter to swing at balls that aren't strikes."

F'in genius that shmuck is.

I like when Ortiz fouled one off, he said something along the lines of "That's one was foul so the game continues" well OF COURSE we keep playing. If it wasn't foul, I sure would be confused why everyone would just keep on going.

McCarver has some good insight sometimes, but I'd rather have Leiter do all the analysis at this point.

I can't believe no one has said anything about Brandon Backe's 8 innings of 1 hit baseball. The LIDGE made the fucking Cardinals look like a Little League team. He made Pujols look SILLY.

And that CATCH by beltran. AND THE HR BY KENT! HOLY TOLEDO!

It seems like they will have to postpone the NYgame as it's raining.
Perhaps it's good for players to have an extra day of rest - but it will be tough for both team to group up and face NLCS winner.

I am rooting for NY to win, of course as being a moderate yankee fan - but the momentum that Boston is having right now is going to be pretty hard to stop. I am just disappointed that NY lost to Boston almost identical way. What's even worse, my favorite pitcher Rivera was one who was responsible for it - although last night's situation wasn't anything fair. 1-3 base with no outs? It's rivera's amazing feat that had stopped them just 1 point - but i guess it's too late now to play "what if" game.

Yankee's extra inning performance was just not acceptable too. Jeter did pretty bad during this series except that 3 RBI hit. A-Rod was just a standing duck, who was just trying to get a easy homer all the time, and Matsui didn't do well in many chances yesterday it seems. There were several chances that they could have pulled together and turn around the outcome - but all I gotta say to is the kudos to Boston defense and pitchers. (wakefield was really good.)
