I think they've dropped a lot of storylines for the rest of the cast in favor of the whole strike team thing.
This is what bothers me - on the Season 3 DVD set there's a documentary on how they actually write the episodes, and in it they talk about how the Strike Team is the "A" story (most important) followed by Dutch + Claudette as the "B" story, another group of characters as the "C" story, etc. The problem I have with this is that I wish that they would mix it up on occasion. Have the strike team as background characters during an investigation of Dutch and Claudette's - or have Aceveda be the protagonist during an ep. Heck, they even did a Lemonhead-centric episode in Season 1, now he's been relegated to mostly background. Julian's troubles with his sexuality have been completely ignored this season - it's as though they weren't able to make the story go anywhere so they decided to ignore it. He should still be facing harassment from his fellow cops if this were trying to be a bit more true-to-life.
My favorite season so far has been season 2...it has the most interesting antagonist (Armadillo), a lot of development for Dutch and Claudette, the Money Train heist, the beginnings of tension between Shane and Vic...but most importantly, Vic didn't dominate the show as much as he does now. The fact that we're following Vic every step of the investigation makes him, to me, less dangerous and unpredictable. This is a guy who killed a cop in the first season pilot, after all - we should sympathize with him but always remember, the guy is scum.
Dutch and Claudette should get their own spin-off show - they're great characters who've basically been spinning their wheels all season and not going anywhere. And the cases they've been handling are crap - the cuddler rapist in Season 3 bored me, and the killer they can't convict in this one...maybe Dutch'll kill Corrine to try to figure out this guy's mentality, lol.
