The Simpsons Original Aspect Ratio (4:3) coming to Disney+ May 28

That was definitely me. Nice that one of the biggest reasons to give the service a spin is now what it should be.

Bad cropping and shitty DNR on a cartoon still isn't ideal.
🤷‍♂️

I watched the simpsons in 4:3 and shitty 480p on 27" CRT back when it originally aired. Now I get to watch it again, in 1080p with 65" to gawk and laugh at. It's funnier 😂

Why would I sacrifice that? I mean, each to their own of course, I'm not having a go, just wondering

That's cool. I don't have Disney+ yet myself, and I heard some of the Disney Afternoon cartoon series had this same issue, can anyone confirm or deny this? If they do, hopefully they get fixed as well, though I wouldn't be surprised to know they're nowhere near as big a priority compared to The Simpsons. Also, I have The Simpsons Seasons 1-10 on DVD, so I'm curious if the Disney + version did a resolution upscale or anything that offers a visual improvement.

No the Disney Afternoon shows are all in 4:3 SD.

Checked out the butchered versions on Disney + just now. Good lord that looks atrocious. Literally hurts my eyes to watch.

Stretching looks like shit, cropping anything out of the original image is just as bad, if not worse. Hail the original aspect ratio. Good on Disney? I’ll...get used to that maybe

Nice, I'm finally going to go back and watch the early episodes

Fuck everything that crops or stretches

Still waiting on that 4:3 HD of the The Wire

It's funny how people wanted to force 16:9 movies into 4:3 versions so that movies were even released in both versions separately. They accepted cropping the screen to get to watch them in 4:3.

Now people want 4:3 originals to be 16:9 and they accept cropping and stretching to get them in 16:9.

It's because goobers just want the image to fill their screen and 20 years ago everyone had 4:3 tvs and now everyone has 16:9

It's still the same retards using the same logic

While they are at fixing the aspect ratio, any chance they can add back in the Michael Jackson episode? We just all about erasing history now are we?

Off topic but I'm pretty sure The Wires 16:9 presentation is not cropped as it was shot on film.

*EDIT*
There is some cropping but I think the widescreen format works.

Yeah, The Wire HD image was messed with through cropping and zooming and whatnot.

But even if it wasn't, the show was framed with 4:3 in mind - that's the important part. Doing anything else is messing with the way the image was originally intended to be presented.

I just hate that they went through all the effort to crop and zoom to make all the individual scenes in the 70hours show look as best they could for the 16:9, rather then just... not doing any of that and leaving it at 4:3. All so some chumps wont be put off by 4:3

Kinda the same story with The X Files and The Sopranos. Initially cropped for a 4:3 presentation, but I prefer the compositional framing of the 16:9.
