Frankly, considering how abrupt that episode was it might have worked better as a movie. Although that would be dependent on them having more of a story to tell on Rigel VII and I'm not convinced that they did.

I can vouch for, maybe, 4 of these episodes as being good.
Of course, when your standard of recommendation is that they're not the worst ever, you can just steer clear of the obvious landmines and recommend just about anything.

I want to say it started with season 21 or 22 where the delivery for the jokes started to feel really "off." Sure, you could say that everything after season 10 or 11 is where it just stopped being funny but you could tell through the delivery of the voice actors that they were trying. Last couple of years it just sounds like the voice actors are just reading the script and just don't have the passion for it.

Last couple of years it just sounds like the voice actors are just reading the script and just don't have the passion for it.

I'll argue against this contention. The voice direction is certainly not consistent and isn't necessarily synonymous with a good script. But I wouldn't say anyone is phoning it in on a regular basis... with the possible exception of Harry Shearer. The rest of the cast has their good episodes and bad episodes (just like we have bad scripts and good scripts) and it's simply a matter of sifting through the clutter to find the good ones.

Hank and Yeardley are the most consistent. Nancy needs a while to get into character - so long as they're not using her early takes, she tends to be fine. Dan is the most talented but is also the most script-dependent. If the writing sucks, he gets dragged down with it. Julie needs the most direction... but she can still pull off Marge fine if she gets it. She sounded great in this year's Christmas episode. And Harry largely doesn't care - this is just a paycheck for him but a capable director can drag a decent performance out of him should they want. He's probably the next most talented after Dan. Just lacks motivation... and youth. I'd say his Flanders has held up the best out of all of his roles.

That's the general hub-bub right now. Main reason they've delayed an announcement relating to the next production run (post-TABF) that would follow the Season 27 holdovers is they're working on a long-term commitment that would keep the show on the air through at least Spring 2019. Clearly the network isn't the roadblock here so I would imagine working things out with the voice talent is what's taking time. An extension that long would take Harry Shearer through his 75th birthday.
