Yesterday I caught "The Canine Mutiny" on TV.

I think this might the only episode in the first nine seasons that I have to force myself to watch whole. Not only is the episode rather boring and lacking in humor, but there's this really bizarre aura all over it that brings the whole thing down. Kinda like "Bart the Mother", except this episode is worse because I really don't buy the characters' actions.

Bart is really unlikable here, giving away SLH and barely feeling any remorse was quite the "WTF" moment. It's quite a leap from the relationship they had in "Bart's Dog Gets an F" or "Dog of Death". Then when it's too late and Bart finally realizes he wants his dog back, we get the whole third act with Bart stealing SLH from Mr. Mitchell. I really don't like this part, as it brings the episode into a whole different level of dark. It's almost depressing to watch and it simply feels wrong.

There's also the bit with the rest of the family being oblivious to everything that's going on. Bart somehow got all these expensive gifts? Okay. Repo men came to the house and the stuff back? This is never even mentioned after the first act break. Bart sent SLH to a kennel two towns away? Right. Way too much suspension of disbelief for this to work.

Definitely my least favorite episode of the classic years. A few jokes here and there work ("He unholied the holy water!"), but on the whole, a very boring episode with a really depressing feel all over it.

We're never going back to the golden age of classic era 1990s Simpsons... BUT there's still worthwhile content on offer here and there.

Definitely seek out Halloween of Horror if you have yet to watch it.

I really enjoyed this episode. I think the latest season actually had a decent hit rate of good-vs-bad episodes! Some nice 'traditional' ones in there.

Lisa's characterization has gone through its ebbs and flows. She had a big preachy spell that has thankfully been tapered down. She's far too sanctimonious for her own good; she has a problem where she tries to apply the same standards she holds for herself and impose them on other people. She is thankfully acting more like an 8-year-old these days although the writers still Mary Sue her far too often. My main criticism of her in recent years is that her relationship with her brother is virtually non-existent.

Marge had a terrible stretch through the early HD era where she was inexcusably bitchy and unforgiving for little to no reason. That has thankfully eased up in the last year or so.

I'm glad you brought up Nelson as his character has improved immeasurably in the post-classic era. He has exceptional depth these days whereas he was pretty much a one-note "Ha Ha" gag until Lisa's Date With Density. Conversely, Barney has regressed in the opposite direction - often to the point where they've taken to writing him out of flashback episodes and replacing him with Lenny, Carl and Moe.

Ned's been kind of all over the map in his development. Very inconsistent on an episode-to-episode basis. The brief Nedna experiment was actually good for him in terms of evolving that character out of a rut but that was short-lived given Marcia Wallace's passing.

I should really watch more recent seasons lol

So Barney's just background material nowadays? I kinda enjoyed him as one of the usual folks at the bar.

They still use Ned a bit more despite Edna's death?

Can somebody help me remember what character is in this scene. Idk what episode it is, it could be a very old one but someone gets in their car, starts it and it immediately explodes. Could be a minor character.

If you're going to take a chance on recent episodes, don't just grab one at random. Seek out recommended episodes, go in with an open mind (they're not going to equal the classic era) and you might wind up surprised.

Here are seven quick recommendations from earlier this decade...
- The Book Job (Season 23, Episode 6)
- Holidays of Future Passed (Season 23, Episode 9)
- A Totally Fun Thing That Bart Will Never Do Again (Season 23, Episode 19)
- Steal This Episode (Season 25, Episode 9)
- Brick Like Me (Season 25, Episode 20)
- Halloween of Horror (Season 27, Episode 4)
- Barthood (Season 27, Episode 9)

I've seen some few that I enjoyed, like the Fun Thing Bart Will Never Do. And the one where Bart wanted another sibling.

I'm curious: do you guys consider season 10 to be classic Simpsons, zombie Simpsons, or "transitional" Simpsons?

On one hand, it's quite a bit worse than anything that came before (except maybe season 1), and there are several episodes that foreshadow the show's downfall (Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, Grampa's kidneys exploding, Homer and Ned going to Vegas and marrying hookers, Loch Ness Monster, springs down the toilet, city flood).

But on the other hand, I'd say it's better than anything that came after, it's got the last great guest star (Mark Hamill), the last appearance of Phil Hartman, the last really good Halloween episode, and some of the last quotable moments (Max Power, Pinchy, Battling Seizure Robots).

I think if the series ended after season 10 it would be viewed as much better; sure slightly on the decline and zany, but it was the last season so it's not a big deal (kind of how Seinfeld's last season was very zany and on the slight decline, but people look at it fondly because it's still Seinfeld).

But since it's been dragging its carcass along for 16 more years after that, it just seems like the transition to worse and worse Simpsons.

I've forgotten, but has Simpsons ever made some homage to deceased actors that had played some guest roles in their show, like say Leonard Nimoy?
