Don't compare. That was a joke.

Nowadays they use it for entire episodes just so they don't have to name the actual brand.

They have been using brands like Krusty Burger, Malibu Stacy and Playdude for forever though. It is just the uncreative names that suck.

the delivery of that line was good

Emphasis on 'good' reminds me of:

"Lisa, I'm Faith Crowley, Patriotism editor of Reading Digest."
"Oh I love your magazine. My favorite section is 'How to increase your word power.' That thing is really, really, really...good."

Has any of the old writing staff gone on record by criticizing the show in its current state? I know that Harry Shearer for awhile would take oblique shots at it for its diminishing quality a few years back. Surprised he could get away doing that. I know that the actress, Chloe Sevigny got in some hot water for inferring any criticism to the direction Big Love took in later seasons.

I know this is a pipedream, but what would it take to change the fortunes of The Simpsons? At this point right now, it seems like the cast and crew of the show do an annual walk of shame each year at Comic Con when they unveil a new season. Shouldn't they drop the celebs and product endorsements? Maybe sack a few writers? The show feels too safe, formulaic, and slapstick for its own good. I remember a time when they were the animated equivalent of the Bundy's from Married..............................with Children. Nowadays, the family seem so..... functional. WTF happened? I know the argument can be made that the show is nearly a quarter century old, but Saturday Night Live is nearly half a century old. And while hardly the irreverent barnstormer that it once was when it began airing, it's nowhere near the embarrassing parody that The Simpsons has become. What advantages does SNL have going for it that The Simpsons doesn't?

Saturday Night Live changes it cast completely every few years. You can't really compare the Chevy Chase/Dan Akroyd/John Belushi era with the Eddy Murphy era or the Jon Lovitz time with Tina Fey. If The Simpsons could drop its entire cast and change directions every 5 years; it would feel a lot of fresher too. The Simpsons tries to go with its time, which pisses off oldtime fans like us but actually works for some people. People actually like the Lady Gaga episode for example.

A serious question here. I know the show has taken a pasting over the years. That being said, how safe is this show from being cancelled? The amount of criticism it gets would warrant it's cancellation if it were any other show. I haven't watched this show since the late 1990's, but the recent episodes I see now and then are just plain awful. What the hell happened? Has its past success made it bulletproof to network executives?

In 2011, Fox said that the show was losing money. They had been keeping it going just because they were terrified of what might happen if they stopped, but it had reached a point where they were willing to take that risk.

Fox said that the voice actors had to accept a 45% pay cut, otherwise the show would be cancelled. The VA's apparently counter-offered, saying that they'd accept a 30% pay cut... if they got more royalties, but Fox said "Nope, we're totally serious. 45% pay cut or you're done." Both sides supposedly quietly agreed to some other compromise offer.

That contract is running out and they'll need to negotiate a new one. And apparently neither side was happy with the previous contract. If the show keeps losing money, that'll keep the pressure on Fox, which will keep putting strain on their relationship, until maybe it breaks. That could end the show, maybe. Fox might just replace the VA's with their non-union Mexican equivalents.

Fox might have been lying though because they want to syndicate the show even further and there is a problem with that as long it is running, or so I have heard.

So...does anyone know when the new season starts? I know it won't be good (hopefully it'll at least surprise me to some extent), but I'm merely sticking to it, out of principle. I grew up with the series and I just want to stick to it until the very end (hopefully the last one, as rumoured).
