Time for everyone to fess up. I know there are Kent Staters and some Buckeyes' on this board, so come clean. Lurkers, this goes for you as well. I'm just curious how many Ohio collegiates/alumni are roaming these parts.

As for myself, I'm a junior at Miami. Not the one in Florida mind you, I mean the real one.

So get cracking.

Its Miami University, damn you. There is no university named Miami of Ohio ::sob::

I wasn't expecting to find a Bobcat in here. I hear there used to be a rivalry between Miami and OU, but that was long ago...

You know, when OU was competitive in something.

No, only the alumni band (of which I am a member) attacking your football team. They tried too hard to make Marshall our 'new' rival. Yeah, that failed miserably.

I have no idea what this alumni band story is about.

Marshall seems obsessed with West Virginia and Miami. Only difference is Marshall actually gets to play Miami. WV typically won't give them the time of day.

I for one will miss the Herdiban when they go to Conference DOA.

What the hell, trying to make Marshall your rival? West Virginia's already got dibs. :p

Oh, don't even get me started on the redneck, classless, waste of flesh WVU fans. Needless to say, there were several fights between band members and yokels as we left the stadium that day.

You've never lived until you've beaten the shit out of some dumbfuck.

Haw! Most of my relatives on my dad's side of the family (that is, those who actually went to college) went to Marshall...So I hear the spiel regularly. :p

Long story short, it was OU homecoming 1992.

First things first, a little info about the Marching 110: if you're in our way, we WILL RUN YOU THE FUCK OVER. We don't care who you are. Player, coach, ref, Tv crew..whatever, it doesn't matter, prepare to be trampled. We also tend to attack on sight if you think you're funny and try to go through our parade block. I tackled and beat the fuck out of a guy last year for this at homecoming, plus countless other times I've punched people in parades and run others over coming off the field.

OU Administration doesn't particularly like the fact that we'll beat people down, but frankly, if someone comes running into the block you don't know what they plan to do. Maybe they're just doing it for kicks (in which case they get beaten down,) maybe they're just ignorant (in which case we may be nice and catch them before anything happens,) or they might be lunatics with a knife trying to stab someone. Better safe than sorry, AFAIC.

Apparently the a Miami coach (can't remember if it was the head coach) didn't know/realize/care and decided it was fine for his players to stand right in the way of the Alumni band as they were coming off of the field. All the while, the crowd kneqw exactly what was going to happen. Hell, the alumni were probably either yelling at them or not caring since we're bloodthirsty as fuck.

Anyway, players start getting run into, coach starts swinging, BAND FUCKING SWARMS.

Miami will NEVER be at a homecoming game ever again, because the Alumni would attack on sight. There's just too much bad blood due to lots of stuff that has happened over the years, and as much as the two schools try to play down the rivalry, the alums won't let it happen.

I've got a video of this somewhere, if I can dig it out I'll cap it.

Band members are hardcore.

Perhaps another reason the rivalry no longer exists is because the fun disappeared a decade ago.

Speaking of football... Hey Matlock, isn't your QB under house arrest?

I visited a friend who went to Ohio University in Athens once. I'm now told I decided to drop by during a "slow" week, because apparently the partying there is legendary, and it was rather quiet. And this is coming from a LSU grad, who knows a thing or two about partying.

Nice town to walk through, though.

One street with something like 20 bars, you make the call. :)

Is that huge Taco Bell that was once a movie theatre still open?

Quick story: while visiting said friend, she had to do something involving school one day, so I decided to take a walk through town. Got a quick bite to eat at that Taco Bell whilst on that walk, and for some reason, they were playing that Joan of Arc movie from a few years back. The unedited version. So I'm munching on a Chalupa while watching someone get raped, then killed by the invaders.

It was really odd and has stuck with me since.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I never saw one bar in Athens, mind you. We ended up driving about an hour away to some other bar to see some band play. Can't remember the name of the place of the life of me.

And can someone explain Palmerfest to me? I bought the shirt for one.

That Taco Bell is indeed still there as of last fall, and I'd assume it still is now since it does INSANE business. In fact, it used to be the world's biggest, but they rarely opened up the upstairs.

They've completely renovated the movie theatre across the street too, it's quite nice and they play a good mix of hollywood and indie flicks.

I'd stay away from Taco Bell and just eat at the Burrito Buggy parked across the street though, it's like 1000x times better, and open until like 4am.

edit: NEVER SAW ONE BAR? I'm assuming this means you never ENTERED one, because how you could miss them means that you strayed no farther on Court street than the two bookstores going no farther down than the Courthouse. There are 5 or so in one direction and 15 or so in the other from that block.

Palmer St. has a big party every year. They close off the street and much fun is had by all. The people who live in the houses organize the whole thing.

You are correct, sir.

I visited during Christmas break. Looking back on that decision, maybe not my best one.

Yeah, it's pretty dead then, since break goes from Thanksgiving to New Years as OU is on quarters.

I don't go to school in Ohio, but my accounting professor just moved here from Ohio.

She used to teach at Ohio State, but she hated everything about Ohio, particularly the weather, so she moved to Florida.

She was appalled to see that only 3 people in a class of about 50 had bought the book. And it's only the first day. She said probably 90% of students she's taught at Ohio State have their books on the first day, AND those kids always come to class, unlike students at my school, where the attendance rate drops to about 50% after the first week of class.

I have many friends going to Kent State, and a lot of my middle school friends are going to OSU. Miami University was my first choice, but when I visited the campus, I was practically the only black person there. :p So, I opted for Ohio State University (plus, Miami University didn't offer as much money....)

So, I'll be at Ohio State University later in September (classes start the 22nd).

I received my room assignment in the mail today, but my mom put it away and I'm not sure whether she took them with her when she took my brother to the store.

But I DO remember that I'm in Morrison(sp?) tower.

(BTW, Miami University has an amazingly beautiful campus).

Ohio weather DOES pretty much suck ass. Here in Cleveland, you'd be better off by reaching your hand into a hat filled with various temperatures and weather forecasts scribbled on folded slips of paper.

Mimic, its a white campus but, lucky me, my three room mates are black. So you wouldn't have been the only one. In this suite, I'm the minority.

Edit: And yeah, the campus was a major reason I came here as well. Well that and it was the only school I applied to so if they had turned me down I would have been up a creek.

I visited friends at OU and Miami University last year and drove through OSU before a concert. OU and Miami were extremely pretty campuses (at least compared to Pitt).

Question for those going to OSU:

Do we absolutely HAVE to read that book we got at orientation? I've searched their website, and while I haven't come across any definitive answer, I'm getting a lot of mix signals.

Anybody know?

If I was back home I'd be so Northern Kentucky I'd be Ohio.

I had boys up in Oxford, but they've moved now.

Anybody know Game Junkies in West Chester?

duderon

rollin' in the gutter
I'm gonna be a sophomore at OSU...

And MIMIC you don't have to read that orientation book, but it does have some helpful stuff. I assume you have a survey class and that's where you'll look at the book the most.

edit: wait if you mean the book they gave you for your major, then no you really don't have to..

Are you referencing the game junkies by Skyline Chili? If so I think I bought Viewtiful Joe there.
