The Spikeout: Battle Street Thread

yeah, i'm going to be making a lot of phonecalls tomorrow evening. worst case i could overpay for it on ebay...there's a copy going for $40 already, with 4 days left.

I emailed Sega Support yesterday before I went ahead and cancelled my Amazon preorder... this is what I got back:

Thank you for e-mailing Sega Technical Support.

The game was just released and most stores have not receiced their copies.

You can check around but Amazon would probably get it first.

Sincerely,

-Sandi

Now I'm not sure how much solace I put in this, but I'm going to keep my preorder with Amazon and see what happens. So don't go bidding on Ebay just yet boys and girls.

And yes, she spelled received wrong... stupid Sandi. :D

the videos on soj's website look great, are you sure you guys just dont suck at the game?

LIke I said, there is some depth and gamplay mechanics to this. I;m having a blast with it, but I'm a beat 'em up whore. ;)

Been watching those vids.

That's the reason why the enemies run into walls after the boss is killed: So one player can easily combo them up and milk power ups!

I love this game. I like how you can charge while punching then stop punching and unleash a a Level 4 Charge..

"Bingo"

Can anyone confirm if the game is region free or not? It if is in such limited quantities I may import it soon rather then wait for a probably delayed local release.

Some of that stuff is a little harder than it looks. I'd say the players are really good at buffering charge attacks and integrating them with combos. But they still take a fair amount of damage here and there.

One thing is that all of the video clips on that site take place in Stages 1 & 2 of Story Mode, when the action doesn't really heat up until Stage 3. A few of the tactics in those clips just wouldn't work later on...

I'll look for this at Fry's today. I'm getting a good feeling about this game like that DC (or was it Saturn) beat em up where you could pick up a turkey leg or a big tuna and whack the dude with it.

local eb has one copy left. off to pick it up. this comes as a relief -- missing a rare game is its own special breed of despair. uh, even if it doesn't look that good.

Damn you GAF for introducing me to mediocre beat-em-ups. Every weekend we play games at work and we've been looking for a good co-op game to play for a couple of months now (the last one was X-men Legends). If you guys know of a better game out now that supports up to 4 players please chime in before I run to EB to get the last copy of this game.

EDIT: XBOX or GC (no multitap for PS2).

Just be aware that any 1-console multiplayer is a splitscreen affair, and the camera has the old-school issues.

It does support system link as well as Live though.

Surprised by that review, I expected a much lower score and utter disdain. As for the cointinues, I guess you can limit yourself if need be, you don't always have to say yes(though I can imagine, saying no is hard as hell).

BTW, what are the other beat 'em ups of this generation. The only one I can think of off hand was that detestable Bruce Lee game. At least Spikeout gives you all your moves from the jump instead of buying/unlocking them.

It would be nice if this game had some option in between "1 death and it's game over" and "Unlimited continues".
At least on Live it sort of does. If you pick no continues, you actually CAN continue, but only after the rest of the group has moved on to a new stage.

So for instance, if I die on a stage 2 boss and the rest of the crew survives and makes it to stage 3, I can then opt back into the game and choose a new character. If everyone dies at once, it's game over.

Aww great, ya just opened the door for Bouncer bashing.

If the SC3 pundits can include the DC in this gen to serve their shit arguements, then I can bring the the DC in for Zombie Revenge. I do love that game. It's less fluid then Spikeout, but I suspect that it's a better single player game.

why did they do this? Do you stray far enough from the other players that splitscreen is necessary? It just seems odd that a co-op brawler would split the screen if the group is fighting on the same block.

In some stages, enemies do come from different locations in large areas, so it is helpful for everyone to have their own screen. There'd be a lot of waiting around for people to catch up otherwise, it'd probably get pretty annoying.

Not to mention that there's so much going on that if all 4 team mates were in one screen space, it'd just be one huge mob assault with hardly any strategy. There's just too many enemies + up to four other players. People low on health would be goners without being able to retreat, and it'd kill the "fall back and charge up" strategy...

I've heard in some stages that people can even take different routes through the same stage, but haven't seen that happen yet.

Isn't that usually the case?

DC has a few awesome ones... Dynamite Cop, Cannon Spike, even Powerstone's more of a beatem up than a fighter...

The genre's been kind of lame this gen beyond DC though...

After playing a couple more hours online tonight, I think SpikeOut is a great beat'em up for what it's worth. Takes me back to the good old days in Shakey's Pizza, where me and my gradeschool buddies would blow our allowances on TMNT, Simpsons, Double Dragon, Golden Axe, or any number of classic arcade beat'em ups.

Had a great time romping through the Shipyard and Opera House tonight with a couple guys on Live. I went through the Opera House twice, and it's a completely different stage depending on what path you take. The outside balcony path is probably my favorite area so far.

A guy on my team tipped me off about a gate bonus you can get in the Opear House lobby... Supposedly you go all the way to the left and hammer on an unmarked door, which causes a huge armored guy to come out and fight you. The other guy on our team said he'd seen that before, but didn't know that's how you trigger it.

Also unlocked some cool characters: Rodriguez, Scorpion, Keiji, and Hong Long.

HOLY CRAP, $152.50?!?

You aren't kidding, Goodcow! I wish I'd ordered an extra copy myself.

I think most people didn't have a chance to purchase more than one, or two at the most. I got the only copy at the local EB, and that was almost a week before the release date.

Something's up with some of those auctions... Last night that one at $150 was sitting there next to a Buy-It-Now listing for a brand-new copy at $55. Either the bidders are idiots or people are shill bidding to inflate the prices.

i got mine, didnt even open it up yet. looking forward to sitting down with it sometime later.
only reason i bought it now was because i didnt wanna pay exorbitant ebay prices. :D

The popculture video actually shows this girl doing AKIRA's (of Virtua Fighter fame) SPOD and DLC- during the last part (bottom left screen)... also, there's a Sarah Bryant look alike doing her PPP(b+K), soccer kick, and kik flips. Shit, I need to buy and XBox and actually play one of my 2 unopened copies.

That video shows what just is possible with proper play.

Funny how this thread has "button mash" and "crappy game" written in the same sentence more than once.

Is there any way to unlock Astro Mall besides beating it in Story Mode? I notice that even in "All Levels" battle mode games on Live, you don't go to the Mall. But I have seen some Japanese games where they are playing it.

If Story Mode is the only way to do it, fat chance of me ever playing it. Level 3 is an absolute bitch.

Also, please list all alternate routes you've taken through levels. I've stumbled across a couple in the Opera House... Is that the only stage that has them?

I can't believe Jacky's flipkick is in the game performed by that guy in red. DId you see that sick floating combo he done? Naughty!

Just got this game on Saturday - exactly what I wanted, game has that classic Sega arcade feel to it.

I tried to get online on Sunday and could not find any matches - any GAFers still playing this online?

Oh yeah, I try to play every night if I have time for a game or two. It's usually late night Pacific time for me, like after 11PM. Gamertag: Teddman

Anyone have an idea about Astro Mall or the alternate routes through stages yet?

Astro Mall is a little hard to find. The path lies in Diesel Town after the second boss. When you defeat that boss instead of taking the path that the arrow point to go up the street in the other direction and you should see a blinking gate. This will atke you through the sewers. When you come out of the swers make sure after you beat those bosses (Hewie, Dewie, etc.), you go through the warehouse. Then that should lead back around to the original path you could have taken, you should finally end up on the basketball court and after you beat those bosses you'll go the the AstroMall instead of the Shipyard. I hear there a way to hit the mall and the shipyard but I'm still playing around. I know my instructions sound cryptic and I'm rambling off the top of my head, but I know how to get there. If you want to hook up and play, I'll just show you where you need to go. ;)

I love this game the network code is broken (i.e. you CANNOT have a 4 player game without issues), but it's still fun as hell to play with pals.

Thanks for the tips... So I don't need to unlock the Mall in Story Mode to play it online?

Do I have to do anything special to go through the warehouse (i.e., is that a hidden path too), I can't remember.

Sure, it'd be cool to play on Live sometime, what's your GamerTag? Somebody really needs to cobble together an alternate path FAQ for this game.

After seeing that last movie, well... I must say I really really really have to have this game! Only 11 days baby! 11 long and tiring days!!!

Edit:

Oh, and you guys better still be playin by then! However, my only hope is that the lag won't be atrocious if we want to co-op through Live.

Cool - I'll look for you, though i'm on the east coast - gamertag is soupbone

That sucks to hear. I'm trying to get some friends over here to pick up the game, but it's impossible to find outside of Ebay.

Fucking Sega, they release a great game like this, and skimp on the quanity.

Am I the only one who found the default controls retarded? I changed mine to A(attack) X(charge) B(jump) Y(special) Right trigger (homing) Left Trigger (shift) and white to jump attack (but never use that).

Makes picking up weapons A LOT easier.

I one more thing (i'm all over the place, I know) - I noticed in a video someone posted before that a lot of the characters are doing Sarah (from Virtua Fighter) back flip kicks - anyone know how? I am only on the second board in Story Mode, so I'm not even sure if I have a character that can do it.

Let's just set up some time to play together. My gamertag is in my profile, but I thought it was obvious that it's Apharmd Battler. Send me a friends request with voivemail so I know who it's frm and let's do this. I'll show you HOW to play as well. I love how Trojan X puts up a video then al of a sudden people are like wow, I didn't know you could do that. Only took me a few hours to figure a ot of that stuff out. Button masher my @$$!! This game is fun if you take the time to learn the gameplay mechanics, but most people don't have the patience or can;t get past the fact that it doesn't have the latest eye candy. <puts soapbox back under desk>. :)

I may play a little bit tonight, that way I won't be up all night on Doom3.

Sounds a lot better, maybe I'll try that.

As for the game lagging a bit with four players, it does, but I actually find three people the optimum crew for Live games. With four, there's so many cooks in the kitchen that you often can't try new combos on enemies without things turning into a mob assault.
