For reference I made this list over my personal enjoyment of these games and how much I enjoy them playing them today. I'm not really a big fan of having "legacy" impact the rankings too much. I would MUCH rather create a "flawed" list than a boring one where #1 is Ocarina of Time, #2 is Super Mario Bros., and so on.
Not my taste but you clearly play way more games than I do. I do think there are some odd picks for the best of particular franchises though - you seem to often favour the newer over the best at their particular time
I approach this list in terms of how much enjoyment I would get for the game if I was playing it today for the first time.
Was this supposed to go under the Morrowind entry?
I feel that the genre didn't explode to casual console players until Oblivion. Hence why after it there was a barrage of WRPGs on consoles. Morrowind soles 1.36 million on the Xbox. Oblivion sold far more than that on the Xbox 360.
It's good to see some of my lesser-known favourites like Ghost Trick make it, though I think it's a shame The World Ends With You didn't (one of my favourite DS and Square Enix games of all time).
The problem with this title is, like many others, I haven't played it in almost a decade so I'm not sure how well it's held up.
Wait.
Are you implying you replayed some of the games that made the list just to make sure it belonged? If so, how many games did you replay before finishing up this article?
Not at all. I just either replayed them over the past 8 years or so, or I played them for the first time not that long ago.
As much as I loved SMT iv, I'm curious why you'd choose it over apocalypse given that I feel like it was an improvement over 4 in pretty much every way imaginable (I could see an atmosphere arguement I guess)
Great list. Shows a super varied tastes and a huge amount of gaming history. Though I also wonder why super metroid isn't on it, even in the appendices
I didn't include a single game I have played since before I made the list around a year ago. Apocalypse is a fairly recent release. Also I sold my 3DS a bit ago.
And yeah, I feel that Super Metroid doesn't hold the "wow" factor it once did. Side-scrolling action-adventure games (e.g. commonly called "Metroidvania" by others) are plentiful today, and weren't exactly alien some years ago. So that likely minimized it's impact when I played it.
Are there any genres you don't like?
MOBA.
