The "Traumatized by Nintendo 64" thread - 56K get GT64

Hey hey hey hey hey!!! Fighter's Destiny was actually quite decent, don't knock it.

Btw, this thread makes me realize just how far graphics have come this generation, also that when N64 games looked bad, they LOOKED BAD!

And when they looked f'in awesome, they looked F'IN AWESOME.. for their day. PD, Turok 2, Conker, etc. :D Can anyone tell I'm a big N64 supporter/fan? :lol

Does anyone have there N^4 still hooked up with a copy of Perfect Dark handy?
If you do, thry this. Load up the remake of facility, go to the tanks near the stairs leading upto the bathroom, and keep walking into them, let me know if anything happens.

Does anyone remember that N64 game where they got the N64 controllers and made it into a racing game? I can't remember what it was called. If anyone remembers, post pics thanx.

MAN, This game was SO much fucking fun. God damn.

Dear Reggie,

if you are reading this, please port this to Nintendo DS:

I'd also like some wireless multiplayer please.

Thanks in advance!

Weren't those unlockables in Aero Gauge or something? I faintly recall something along those lines..

Quest 64 and despite what SOME people in this thread might have you believe, it was atrocious.

Ogre Battle 64 was where it was at on the N64. Perhaps it's only truly great RPG, but it was a f-cking stupendous one.

OB64 was awesome too. But I thought Q64 was a decent play, especially the battle system. If you were hoping for a long, story driven game, then I can see how it was atrocious. It certainly wasn't the best RPG on 64 for that matter (that would go to OB64 -- man, I loved that game...CF = 100! Best Ending!)

And while I'm here.....

Whenever I'm driving through fog with someone else in the car, I still make a joke along the lines of "Oh nooo, I'm in an N64 racing game!!!"

Ah crap, I do that too. :P

Oddly enough, the launch night for Gamecube was one of the foggiest I've seen around here. I found it somehow fitting...

You'll probably enjoy it. It's dated, and not as charming as the original. The mechanics were also simplified. You could only use items on something in the environment, you couldn't use items on other items in your inventory, like on the N64. This may sound like a terrible thing, but I did feel that they instead made the puzzles themselves a lot tougher, since you didn't have that extra layer to complicate things.

The end had a really well done music-based puzzle, IMHO, where your hearing and attention span are key. Great stuff. Some of the puzzles were so impossible to figure out, but once you did, they made perfect sense. Ugly graphics, slow 3D engine, but excellent atmosphere and singularly great (and moody) music, IMHO. Also a nice story, IIRC.

Have you become jaded these days? Looking over this thread, I can't even begin to understand how you could be so harsh on a number of more recent games after having enjoyed some of the titles in this thread. It's quite shocking...

Jarrod, I can't believe I forgot Paper Mario. You're right, of course. I wouldn't classify OB64 and PM in the same category as the Zeldas, however.

dark, what do you mean, exactly? Shadowgate and its N64 sequel are competent examples a woefully under-represented genre, particularly on consoles these past two gens, imho. There are a bunch of games in this titles which were, if not great, at least very good and certainly not 'traumatizing.'

Edit - I don't consider myself particularly jaded, no. But, generally speaking, the more a genre is represented, the higher my standards on any particular game within that genre.

*sigh*

I actually bought Quest64. It was before I discovered the internet so I had no idea what I was getting into. I just remember thinking "Hey! I liked playing some RPGs on the SNES and NES, I'll check this out! They're all pretty much the same right?"

I think I played it up until the last boss before I realized how crappy it was and just quit.

Oh boy...what an amazing thread...this is what I expected when I joined.

Being quite a bit tipsy, this might come off as incoherent, but I had a ton of fun playing Quest 64. But there was method to my madness...I was fiending for Zelda.

I rented it as it was the only game out at the time that offered a full 3D Interactive field to explore, as well as a day and night cycle which I knew both existed in Zelda. So I rented it and pretended it was indeed Zelda (I was in grade 7).

And Mission Impossible has some of the most memorable scenes ever, like the aforementioned 'mingling' bit. Also, Winback (which was originally supposed to be MGS's killer) was awesome. Such a fun action title, I remember reading in Nintendo Power how Nintendo took an interest in the title and delayed it to ensure a better product.

I just wish it took place at night, so the fog wasn't so bad.

How was the PS2 version?

But yeah, the N64 was the time when I was into gaming the most. I know more now than I did back then (I'm a multi console gamer now, but I prefer Nintendo to all else), and I am more of a fan of gaming in general now, but I used to love my 64.

Fuck, I miss those times :(.

I still consider Paper Mario to be the best N64 game. It was everything you could want from a game that was essentially an homage to Mario, and it was everything that Super Mario RPG wasn't. The "RPG" gameplay was simplistic at best, but everything else overrode it.

Ogre Battle 64 was really fun, although not as cool as Tactics Ogre in the longrun. Still, it was solid B/B+ SRPG entertainment despite some flaws late in the game. It was miles better than the only other SRPG released for N64, Super Robot Taisen 64.

Furai no Shiren was fantastic also. I had both Torneko for PS1 and Furai no Shiren for N64, and while both games were great, Furai no Shiren had an edge over it (and that's saying a lot). Jarrod did you even play Furai no Shiren or are you just trumpeting it because it's by Chun Soft? :P

and no, the Zelda games aren't RPGs.

Harvest Moon 64, Majoras Mask and Ogre Battle 64 were hot games, and all the best in their given franchises, oh, oh! (Well, not counting TO:LUCT in comparision to OB)

Anyone have the main menu music? :lol

I remember my brother rented this when it first came out. I didn't even play the game, but I remember that menu music, after only hearing it for about 30 seconds.

I was pretty into the N64 up until Final Fantasy VII. Months prior I got Final Fantasy VI which had rekindled my love for the genre, and I was begging my parents for a Playstation. They didn't buy me one, but my older brother did the Christmas after FF7 came out. Damn, I wish I could have that much fun with games again. 1997-2000 it was almost solely JRPGs for me, aside from Mario Kart. The Nintendo 64 was almost irrevelant to me, as I didn't care for Goldeneye or Ocarina of Time.

Tell me something, do JRPGs predominately suck nowadays, or have I just burnt myself out?

Jesus Christ, my experience with N64 was almost the same as The Experiment's. Up until the selling off - I have to be exactly the same age. I remeber when I first played Mario 64. I remember Goldeneye being the talk of 6th grade, I remember pre-ordering OOT with a bunch of my friends, I remember playing Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. But I stuck with it through the end, buying Perfect Dark, Majora's Mask and Conker's Bad Fur Day towards the end.

I was more of a happy gamer back then. I didn't know so much about all games, I was younger, and I didn't come to this forum, so I wasn't jaded yet.

I still hold that the N64 > Playstation in terms of quality over quantity. Playstation had more good games, but N64 had a bunch of fucking amazing games.

What a great game. I never finished it, though.

Rocket: Robot on Wheels!

From Sucker Punch

awesome

IF THERE WAS EVER A GAME MORE TRAUMATIZING

Seriously. Rocket deserves NO love. Trekking through a soulless physics lab as a gimped and helpless unicycle IS NOT FUN.

I remember renting this:

and my sister telling me how much it sucks. She'll play a game or two but most will play Zelda to play the fishing game for a few hours.

I remember trying to convince myself that it wasn't that bad. God, that game sucked.

Fighter's Destiny was the "3D fighter" in which you tried to knock everyone out of the ring, right?
Err... I think you're thinking of Smash Bros... how you could get that confused with Fighter Destiny, I have no clue.

Fighter Destiny is the fighter that was based on a point system. 7 points to win. Really good idea because ring outs were only worth 1 point (and not an entire round like VF). Throws would automatically end the round, but were worth 2. KO's were 3 points, while KO'ing with a super gave 4 points.

it's kind of cool to see a thread like this where people talk about some of the best (and worst) N64 games there were. In my high school years I had like a few friends who loved Nintendo and all the rest had turned to SOny and told us all the time how the PSx was better and how much our N64s sucked.

Every day at lunch time we would go to a friends house that lived nearby, eating our food on the way to e able to play more when we got there. We would play Smash Bros and Godeneye, replaced later by Perfect Dark. Man thsoe were the days!

The N64 was a pretty good console with some great games. It might have been missing a lot, but if you weren't an RPG fanatic i think it had enough stuff to keep you occupied. Plus it was the ultimate party console!

Was ShadowMan any good?

Hell yes! I still weep for it's terrible sequel. God I remember my stomach churning when I saw the beta running in Acclaim's booth at the first E3 I went to.

Great voice acting, some good music, and just a good action-adventure romp all around.

Damn, now I want to play the original again.

N64 was better than the GCN, but it's gone now :( *sniff

Yeah it's pretty amazing that despite the Gamecube being on par with PS2/Xbox in terms of technology (more or less), it failed to have the same kind of memorable classics that the N64 did. It wasn't even as popular as the N64. Oh well, I guess this downwards trend will continue until Nintendo realizes they need to go 3rd party...

Eh. I don't think PS1 has the same kind of memorable classics that the N64 had either, but that doesn't make N64 a better system than the PS1. Both are good at what they do.

GCN not as popular as the N64 isn't a good indication on which system is better either. Cuz much damage in image/brand to the GCN was due to N64 anyway. Plus better Sony brand than ever and more serious competitors.

GCN is basically better than N64 in every way imo.

N64 lacked great 3rd party support, GCN had awesome 3rd party support but Nintendo wasn't in its brightest moment.
Basically the lesson says that best Nintendo systems (GBA/SNES/NES) have had both.

That's all.

why is there no "rolls eyes" emoticon? :(

seriously, i've heard this song way too many times. put something else on.

The PS2 version was excellent. Worth checking out (especially when you consider the low price).

Final Fantasy VII?
Gran Turismo?
Metal Gear Solid?
Resident Evil?
WipEout?
Ridge Racer?
Tekken?

Obviously I still respect Mario 64 and OoT, but the N64 is one system I know I'm never going to boot up again. When I think of the time I invested in games like Turok and NBA In The Zone '98 (because there wasn't anything else), I wonder what was wrong with me.

Dual Heroes was quite terrible.
Back when I was nine this one kid would come over my house just too play my N64, and for my birthday party he bought me Dual Heroes so he could play it at my house sometime. I played it when I got home, worst game ever. And that dumbass who bought it is a major pothead now, might explain why he used to come over everyday too play it.

Chameleon Twist, Wayne Gretzky and Quest shoudl be off your list, I enjoyed those games quite a bit. Good memories of those games.

IQ wise is the worst system ever...But just remaking it's library to DC levels of IQ (not gfx) would have produced timeless games.

They might suck now, but Rare are what push the N64 into being better than the GC, imo.

And the Goemon games. And Ogre Battle. Those things make the N64 better.

It's arguable to say that the GameCube has better third party support. The N64 had much more third party exclusives than the GameCube will ever have. While the Cube may have more overall third party games, they are mostly shovelware found on the XBOX, PS2, and PC.

Nintendo also developed much higher quality software on the Nintendo 64. Actually, Nintendo, RARE, Acclaim, DMA, Factor 5, Quest, AKI, Paradigm, Midway, BOSS Games, Konami, Genki, and Sucker Punch made some great exclusive n64 games.

Speaking of which, whatever happened to BOSS Games?

And by the way everybody, fine work on turning my perfectly fine hate thread into a N64 love fest!

Ogre Battle 64 is my 3rd favorite game of all time, surpassed only by Resident Evil 4 and Ocarina of Time.
