The "Traumatized by Nintendo 64" thread - 56K get GT64

Experiment - I could have written your post. Exactly how it was for me. Except that I was interested in girls.

EAD - This thread is a subjective list of stuff that let me down in various ways. Mostly because I expected from many of them that I could really show to my friend who left to work for Sony that Nintendo 64 was the superior console. For example

"So you have Tekken - now take a look at Fighters Destiny!!! ... uh ... shit"
"Who cares about V-Rally, there is this game called MRC coming for... nevermind actually."
"Well Final Fantasy VII is really 2D, why bother when you can have a fully 3D game like Quest 64.. hey, where are you going?"
"GT is good, but I'm really looking forward to GT64 ... wait... not again!"

Nintendo was solid through the generation, and Rare right up until JFG and DK64. I really loved Super Mario 64, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, Star Fox 64, Zelda: OOT, Blast Corps, GoldenEye 007, Diddy Kong Racing, ISS.

Why would you care what your friends think of the games YOU liked? Besides the N64 had Goldeneye THE college dorm game of the late 90's you had nothing to be ashmed about.

And screw War Gods haters. I liked that too. Plus, there was absolutely nothing wrong with Killer Instinct Gold. It wasn't anything new, but people act like the game wasn't playable or something.

This thread is about to turn into a Mission Impossible 64 appreciation thread, I CAN FEEL IT! I mean, who can fucking forget the sniper level in the train station in MI64. You god damn well know that was fun as fuck.

missionfinal3.jpg

Or the semi FPS inside the train level where citizens would pop out from their chairs and bad guys would too so you had to be careful with when you shot?

missionfinal4.jpg

And then there was the rewarding "blow the fuck out of shit" gunboat level.

missionfinal10.jpg

And the aforementioned awesome mingling level.

The game was definitely a let down to most, and even to me initially, but now I really want to play it again. God damn you guys.

Okay, screw it.

I enjoyed

-Castlevania 64
-Bomberman 64
-Cruisin' USA (I think that was it)
-Donkey Kong 64

Haters die. :D

Castlevania 64 was nowhere near a bad game. It was just nowhere near being SotN quality and that is why it recieves a lot of hate but the sequel was better and more refined with great boss battles. Agree on BM64 I use to kick my friends butts all day long in that game.

EDIT: Yeah MW I was one of the "600,000 Served!" for Mission Impossible and I liked it a lot because it had a nice variety of levels and missions. I still remember the laser level to a tee. You could skip the first 5 altogether by dropping straight down. The only thing it was missing was a few more levels and some nice boss battles.

the N64's problem was support was so thin at times that EVERYTHING became a major release. I think for the first two years or so I literally played every game that came out for the system.

YES! And the cheezy disguises! And the "lazer level" where you have to navigate through the red beams down to the computer...CLASSIC!
The game even got ported to the PS - an even crappier version!!:lol

Killer Instinct Gold was a perfectly servicable port of an utterly abysmal fighter. It wasn't balanced, it wasn't original, it was sort of ugly, and it just wasn't very much fun. I fooled myself into liking the SNES port of KI, but by the time KI Gold came around, its weaknesses were obvious.

agreed.. you have to remember half of the arcade games apeal was the fact that it broke into FMV for the finishers and shit, which is what made it a big deal at the time..

then we get a pretty shitty port without FMV, and they tried to make it pseduo 3d and that actually made the game nearly unplayable.

Experiment - I could have written your post. Exactly how it was for me. Except that I was interested in girls.

Girls were interesting to me around 8th grade. It was just that I was such a gaming nerd back then that I'd rather play N64 than talk to them.

I think back and realized if I wasn't such an idiot, I would have sold off my N64 mid 98. I would have definitely given up gaming for sure after this machine was sold and probably would be several thousand dollars richer.

I also remembered:

- When Mario Kart 64 was called Super Mario Kart R. It also had Magikoopa in it. I wanted to race with him (or it?) so badly.
- How pissed I was when six months later, the price of the N64 dropped. I was insulted to believe that people could get $149 N64s instead of a $199. I tried to steer people away from it by convincing them the cheaper priced N64s would be all defective. Damn, I was a douche.
- Same as above but with Player's Choice. Damn these assholes for paying $40 for a game I paid $60 for.
- I rented a few games too like QB Club 98. I think everyone got burned with this game, whether it be bought or rented. My favorite rental had to be Blast Corps. I rented all the time in 97 but didn't bother any other years.

Quest 64 sucked, but it was fun to play , for some reason. :lol

Seriously, if you take a purely objective look at what the game has to offer, it's fucking horrible. I don't know why the game is so damn enjoyable to play, though. Maybe it's the battle system?

Plus it has a kickass soundtrack. :D

Worst N64 game I ever played: Hexen 64

Most unique one: Buck Bumble

Buck Bumble ruled.

Anyone have the main menu music? :lol

It was charming and had a unique battle system that begged to be expanded upon. I have no idea what the soundtrack sounded like because I would play OK Computer everytime I played it. It made it more surreal.

Hexen 64 was an awful port but the 4 player mode was pretty damn addictive.

Shit, a Playstation version of this thread would be quite an undertaking. I don't think there's enough space in the fucking world.

There's a certain nostalgic charm about 3D games crammed into a cartridge - especially the crappy ones!

I really liked Quest 64. Its kinda sad to see it on your list.

Yea, same here. Too ba :) I got my hands on a pre-used one, haven't played it yet, although, I've always wanted to finish the game ever since I rented it.

What's cool is that the towns of Dondoran and Larapool use the same melody, but different arrangements. I didn't realize it until a few months ago, actually. :lol

I'm ashamed to say that I was one of those people who bought Quest 64 new for the whopping $65 it went for, just because of the novelty of it being the first N64 RPG.

And yeah it sucked, though i've played worse console RPGs...

I remember renting that one when it came out. I recall that it was pretty fun, but the fog ruined it in some places. Didn't it also have some sort of a soccer multiplayer mode?

Fighters Destiny was fun to play and the cow rocked. Quest 64 and Hybrid Heaven actually had interesting battle systems, but were just a bit slow with them. Top Gear Overdrive wasn't bad either.

You know what game was pretty cool: Snowboard Kids. I remember playing that multiplayer for hours.

....

never did player the second one.

Aidyn Chronicles! How could you miss that, Chittagong? Obviously you didn't care about impressing anyone by then, but that shit ranks right up there with Superman 64. In fact, I can see Aidyn and a pointy Supes with their arms around each others' shoulders (well, Aidyn's non-steroid shoulder). That game was very hard to stomach, if not unplayable. Yes, this was obvious from the screens of the game, but part of me hoped it was at least fun. That part of me is dead now.

Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness is one of my favorite games. I don't know why.

And Quest 64 was fun with a GameShark.

That's all.

Can I get some Duke Nukem 64 love here?

You know what? It had bots, alright? F'in bots. Does Halo 2 have bots? No. End of story! :lol

Another game I loved. Get some friends or play alone. I was also a huge Duke Nukem PC fan before I even bought a Nintendo 64. Got all sorts of expansions and stuff.

It's good to know there's intelligent people on this board still. :D

It's pretty clear that the N64 was the place to go for:
1) Platformers
2) First Person Shooters
3) Fighters... wait scratch that..
4) Enjoyable Multiplayer Games

:D

Oh Hell muthafuggin yes you can. Best PC to N64 port period. That was the only FPS that could peel us away from Goldeneye. GT Interactive did a awsome job. Remember the Fast Food Burger Joint secret level? Oh where art thou Duke Nukem?

*Shakes fist at 3D realms*

KI Gold is thoroughly playable, and has a fucking stunning soundtrack.

No doubt. The bass coming out of that little cart was impressive at the time. It beat anything I had on PSX at the time.

Hybrid Heaven was very cool and Chameleon Twist was a cute little game. I don't remember being traumatized by them

I used to make fun of my brother for liking Quest 64 but I've had the urge to try it myself... it doesn't really seem that bad.

I regularly replay (once or twice a year) the original NES Shadowgate. Would you recommend Shadowgate 64 to me? I've looked at it, but always been afraid it would burn me, and I don't want to distill my fond memories of the NES game.
Allow me to be the dissenting voice. It's got nothing on the NES game, especially not music. Its languid pace and leisurely shuffling put me to sleep better than any other game. So, I guess I'd recommend it for insomniacs rather than Shadowgate fans.

This thread got me playing my N64 again. Beat Bomberman 64's final boss 3 times, beat OoT for the umpteenth time, rolled around Termina as a Goron a little bit in MM. Fun. :)
