The "Trippy" effect in games where it doesn't belong...A trend?

Final Fantasy XIII-2 has this stuff, as well. Very cool the first time through, but grates when you're replaying parts to Platinum the game.
 
I love trippy/dreamy/hallucinatory moments in games. Max Payne 2 had great ones (Max Payne's were good as well, but MP2 did it better). Liked it in Alan Wake, Uncharted, Dead Space 2, etc.
