The women of "The View" weighed in on a now-viral video of a New York City subway brawl on Wednesday, arguing that the woman who was slapped by the man in the footage might have gotten what she deserved.

The video, posted to YouTube on Saturday under the title "Man smacks the soul out of girl on the NY Subway," shows a woman taunting a man on the train, making fun of his style and calling him "stupid." When the woman smacks the man on the head, he turns around and ferociously slaps her in the face, spawning a messy, sprawling brawl in the subway car.

Whoopi Goldberg began the discussion, warning her audience: "I'm about to piss you off."

“If you slap anybody -- but particularly women -- if you slap, put your hands on somebody, you cannot be guaranteed that he’s not going to slap the [blank] out of you," she said.

Goldberg has a history of making similar claims, arguing earlier this year that Jay Z had "the right" to hit Solange Knowles back during their now-infamous elevator fight.

“If I slap a man, he has every right to slap me back," Goldberg said back in May after former co-host Barbara Walters questioned her comments.

But this time, both Goldberg's co-host Rosie Perez and guest-host Ashanti ultimately agreed.

"I felt a little hypocritical when I saw this," Perez said. "I was like, 'Okay, she needed to get slapped back.'"

Ashanti concurred, saying, "She definitely needed to get slapped.

Surprised this coming from The View of all places.

Well, I think it's obvious that if someone slaps you, you have the right to slap them back, no matter the gender.

What I'm really confused about is what this has to do with Ashanti. Ashanti is on The View now? Like, the singer? lol

i personally wouldn't have slapped her back due to the guy's size. I would have pushed or shoved or held her down.

BUT i don't blame the guy for his reaction. under the circumstances shown in the video, he had that right to defend himself. and a slap is a better alternative than a punch.

Says in the article she's on as a guest.

The old case of if a woman says it's okay, then it must be okay.

So she verbally abused him, then slapped him first? And he's in the wrong?

tbh, the only thing he could have done was leave the train car. But he was really stuck between two bad options. There was no good ending for him. At least she got a felony charge for her actions. The instigator got the worst of it all. But no one came out better than before.

See, here's the thing... personally, I'm not a guy who hits women or cares to hit women. And if I'm being honest, that applies specifically to women and because they're women. I feel like it's the same way for many of you guys as well. The feminist viewpoint, on the other hand, is to say that "all violence is wrong," which is better for equality. But even if I tend towards pacifism for the most part, I'd be lying if I said that I thought that all violence is unacceptable. So if I were to apply my view equally across the sexes, I wouldn't really make a distinction between a man and a woman being hit. But since I'm not going to do that, my current view is going to be by definition sexist.

So I mean... I can see where everyone's coming from in the upcoming argument, at least.

And they are right. A man can only take so much before he breaks. That girl made fun of him on multiple levels then assaulted him. He responded with a great amount of restraint and was attacked by multiple people.

Why the hell would she even want to damage that beautiful man's face? Only thing I'd want to do to a gorgeous mug like his would be to kiss it.

She deserves it for potentially damaging a national treasure

I wouldn't personally do it but don't start none won't be none etc.

Should of just restrained her though.

I feel like we already went over this.
Whoopi asserted a while back that it's okay to defend yourself should push come to shove regardless of gender. I tend to agree, the guy didn't seem to do much other than throw one slap out to stop her beating on him, the rest of her crew just jumped him anyway smh. The law seems to agree as well given the outcome of that incident.

Don't hit people and expect them to not react, it's silly.

This is one of those cases where it's so obvious, everyone agrees. Some outliers of course but I'd guess you'd see over 70% approval of The Slap.

Especially because it was an open handed swat. Had he punched her it would rightly be seen as far different. But he didn't,so yeah. She had that shit coming.

These threads are always a joy to read through when they're done. I don't particularly think anyone deserves to be slapped but the guy had every right to stand up for himself.

8-Ball man looked upon her, his vision free from the clouds of binary gender, and instead of casting a judgment on her as unequal due to her gender, race, creed or sexual identity -- treated her with the same respect and dignity as he would afford any human being, regardless of who they were.

Anyway, ideally, don't hit anyone. It gets murky with self defense because the heels she was hitting him with could have done some real damage to his face. If there's a downside to this video it's advocating that some people simply deserve to get hit, cathartic as it second-hand feels.

Its good to see people still take context into account before forming an opinion on a situation. For awhile there I thought that word was completely removed from our vocabulary.

In our current climate, I can see click bait articles and bloggers writing an article titled "Man Assaults Woman on Subway".

Were Ashanti and Rosie Perez just special guests, or are they full-fledged co-hosts of the View now?

Because that's not a lineup I would have ever predicted.

if he was smaller, then it would be ok by you?

I agree with her this time. But let's not forget that Whoopi has said some crazy things in the past, as some others here have pointed out.
