The White House finally settles the .GIF debate, NeoGAF celebrates, NeoJAF cries foul

Pronounce character. Pronounce variable. Shorten those. Neither of those sound like "Charlie." So stop that mess with the inappropriate pronunciation of the abbreviated term.
As opposed to the GIF/JIF debate (G as in graphics), this one at least makes sense to me, though I won't be changing my ways any time soon. Saying "car" instead of "char" would feel weird.

I see alot of folks pronounce bmp as B-M-P, am I weird for just always saying bitmap? I know it's not spelt like that, but it seems so much easier to say (two syllables compared to three).

Edit:
no it's not, char is short for character and the 'char' is character is pronounced as care.
Wait, people pronounce "character" as care-actor?

It's always been gif with a hard g, despite what anyone wants to believe (including the "creator"), much like it's always been giblets with a hard g.

If you pronounce either gif or giblet with a soft g - let alone both - you are clearly some kind of mutant.

I'd like to see what evidence they based this on. (Hint: it was based on opinion, just like this duscussion)

#teamgif

(Pronounced jiff)

This isn't even worth talking about. Hard G is what the majority say. The White House should quit wasting time and start focusing on important things like piezo. How am I suppose to say that?

Uh yeah? People prounounce "character" as car-actor?

I just saw this.

IT'S NOT LIKE THE PEANUT BUTTER.
Suck it haters, get it stuck on the roof of your mouth.

Hard G, as in Gangsta as fuck.
Thanks Bams.

Also perfect thread title Cyan.

I've been pronouncing it NeoJAF since forever.

Hate more.

So you call gaming 'jaming', is that what you're saying?

You're a monster. I'm glad this has government support and I say people saying JIF need to be re-educated.

It stands for Graphics Interchange Format, not Jraphics, people.

I really don't give a shit what Steve Wilhite said, he mis-pronounced his own damn creation.

On the contrary, it's pronounced gif. As in how it's spelled.

Would love to hear you say these words:

gem
genuine
gist
gymnast

Also it's logical because it's a rule of English for the most part to use the pronounciation since it's used with basically every other word:

How To Pronounce 'g'
The letter 'g' is most often pronounced like in 'go', however sometimes it can be pronounced as a 'j' sound, like the 'j' sound in 'just'

Rule: It is a 'j' sound when it is followed by 'e: 'i' or 'y'

I pronounce it as jif. Gif sounds awful, like it's a piece of candy, here, have a gif! Doesn't roll off the tongue as well. Jif may be peanut butter but that has more protein and nutritional value than candy so I win.

I've always been a bit baffled by this debate. I've pronounced the word "GIF" for as long as I can remember. My best guess why is that "JIF" was already associated with the peanut butter for me
and I don't like peanut butter.

The guy who named if gets to, you know, name it. And he named it with a soft g. Soft g it is.
He created the format, but he merely interpreted the pronunciation.

I'm for hard g myself. The existence of the word "gift" seals the deal.

We all have particularities though. For me:

.bin = binn
.bmp = bee em pee, or I say bitmap.
.exe = exee (ecksy)
.wav = wave
.flac = flack
