The Wii U in a worse or better shape after the PS4 reveal?

The PS4 "reveal" fell flat. Reading the thread as it happened was very telling. The Sony cheerleaders were rationalizing their pre-event hype by repeating ad nauseam "Sony is KILLING it", etc., whereas the more neutral video game fans were a bit puzzled by what they were witnessing. (What was wrong with the bald headed, crazy-eyed Geoff Tate look-alike spewing nonsense? Good God...)

Regarding the more intense Sony fans, reading that thread reminded me a great deal of the official thread leading up to the release of the Vita: lots of hope founded in the pure power of the system. The PSOne/2 dynasty days are well behind.

because you're saying some low polygonal cubes in the far distance makes what is a bloody impressive looking image "not impressive", there's no point debating it really.

Yeah just like the people saying the very clear draw distance of X is 'doable on current gen' and unimpressive (there aren't any examples of PS360 games pulling of such scale on a pristine level), yup double standards all around.

Of course, but the whole point, of my original post, was that it's not consumer's jobs to think up IPs for them. That was what I was originally responding to. The whole idea of 'well if you can't think up new IPs then why expect them to' is ridiculous, it's their job to do stuff like that.

I personally think some of Nintendo's best games have been new IPs and I'd like them to introduce more.
I'm pretty sure they will introduce new IPs. Hell, they introduced so many new IPs this gen. They were just largely ignored or scoffed at because they weren't 'interesting' enough...

Maybe it would be doable? I don't see anything in that screenshot that makes me think it isn't.

I remember thinking Assassin's Creed 2's draw distance was amazing, and the fact that you could go to every place blew my mind. There was a lot of geometry there too.

It's not really the graphics that excite people about X, it's more the ideas behind the gameplay and the fact that it's from the developers of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Yea but some people were "excited" about the graphics. They compared it to killzone 4.

Nintendo fans grasping at straws. X looks good for current gen. Not even mindblowing for current gen. We've barely seen anything though.

Oh, it's time for X vs KZ again!

To the man with a Killzone gif every thread looks like a good place for a Killzone gif.

If Killzone is the best PS4 has going for it Sony should be extremely worried.

There is a pretty drastic difference...but at least Nintendo games will look great and last gen had a lot left in it, especially games that would suit Nintendo consoles well.

Yeah, it didn't impress me at all. At the end of the of the day, Killzone is just the same tired first person shooter game mechanics that have been done a million times, this time with a slightly shinier coat of paint.

I can't imagine the Wii U being in any worse shape than it is now, but I don't think it's better, either.

I'm sure third parties already knew the basic idea behind all three systems, so I don't think anyone at a major developer was seeing the PS4 for the first time this week. Those allegiances have already been made, and it is readily apparent those allegiances aren't with Nintendo.

Sure. But Wii U's fortunes aren't 100% intertwined with the PS4's success/failure. But neither are its problems 100% caused by the PS4. There is some overlap though, but it's too early to tell how much.

Devilijho if you dont see that jump you are definantly blind.

I don't see how folks want to get sucked up in such debates in the first point. It's like playground posturing on who has the most valuable baseball card collection based on the brand of gum that included said cards.

Now, I don't really care about the whole X vs KZSF debate. People who didn't care for the Killzone piece either don't like typical FPS games or just want to prove another agenda. X looks ok, and I'm glad there is something else in the future for my Wii U system to utilize, but trying to set that up against as a Wii U champion is laughable on gauging the quality of the systems. Setting up two entirely different games that may or may not (we've only seen them once each) be good at what they do is just a bad move in my opinion.

Typical dance of new consoles though, so better just break out the popcorn and try to embrace seeing it over and over again.

Oh I know Im just kidding with devilijho he knows that I think lol. I would not mind comparing a ps4 game to Wii U game but just atleast make them similar comparison. As of now Wii U has nothing compare idk why X was the standard but its a different type of game than killzone. Might as well compare wario mini game to killzone just for comparison sakes. Id say wait awhile until theres a similar game say metroid prime 4 by retro if it is being developed. That would be worthy comparison imo. But people love their instant gratification so whatever.

if the Wii U already struggles to move units now, I just can't see how this would change when the next Sony/Microsoft consoles arrive. The Wii U pad clearly doesn't appeal to the masses the same way the Wii remote did, and now Nintendo stuck in a low-tech corner without the hype that surrounded the Wii. It's quite problematic

Haha well I think I was mostly just piggybacking off of the comment to launch a point. You're one of the more...objective (?) folks on GAF, so I figured you wouldn't get on the offensive/defensive on that view.

Not sure if I answered the OP, but I say it could go either way. My personal view is that it will do better than the PS4 initially when they are next to each other on shelves. The Wii U is the cheapest option (whether by a difference of $50 or $100, it doesn't matter), family friendly, and will have established a bit more in software at that point hopefully. Another way to look at it is that the audience being targeted between the PS4 and Xbox will be divided between the two consoles.

The Wii U may finally receive new GamePads, if anything to have an option with a greater battery life. Nintendo is notoriously sketchy on delivering products on time, but that would clear up the controller issues while the OS issues and additional entertainment providers/apps are set to be settled as well this year.

To counteract the above, the 360, PS3, and Wii may still be selling well enough, as there is already late 2013 support confirmed for those systems regarding some major titles (Watch Dogs, BF4, Destiny), with others such as COD and AC assumed to be as well. Those systems are likely to also see some discounts and sales from retailers to help gain revenue that can actually be profit as opposed to the new systems that sell at a loss with each unit.

As I mentioned above, Nintendo isn't exactly Mr. Punctual when it comes to bringing features and even games out for their systems. While the OS hasn't been that much slower than what I have experienced on the PS3, it's still an issue many want to see solved. The VC is currently rather bare and divided, rather than a universal setup seeing active support. Features that were promised in the past are still absent and lacking the vision presented.

There's a lot more riding against the Wii U system than that, but at this point everything has been said that could be said.

The big thing that it is going to come down to is the pricing and marketing of the Wii U vs all of the other systems, and whether or not everyone is ready to jump to brand new, costly systems this Christmas.

Here's my reasons I feel Nintendo Wii U will be okay.

1. IT'S NINTENDO - In case most of you forgot. 3DS was doing horribly in it's first year. Nintendo finally had to make a price drop and did so right when a major Super Mario game came out. Now, it's doing great and totally killing the poor Vita. Nintendo just needs some of their big name IP games and they'll do just fine. Also, Nintendo isn't a "division". This is all they have and you can bet they'll keep fighting to stay relevant.

2. THE WII U IS DIFFERENT - In the last generation, we had three systems. PS3, 360 and Wii. Wii was able to compete okay because it was so different from the competition. 360 and PS3 for all intents and purposes are pretty much the same damn system. Especially when it comes to 3rd party software. Also, it tends to cater to an entirely different audience. Mainly families. Not the hardcore crowd.

Not only that, the Wii U has two big game changers. The Gamepad and Miiverse. The Gamepad touch controls and ability to play most games off of the TV along with using it as a universal remote control help change the way you game in the living room since you can still play Call of Duty even if someone else wants to watch TV. Miiverse is a great, twitter-like social media tool that make sit much easier to pick out new friends to add to your list or just follow your favorite internet celeb even if their friends list is filled up. Plus, the art. The awesome, awesome art done by the community is incredible!

3. THE WII U WILL BE AROUND HALF THE PRICE OF THE NEW SYSTEMS - The Wii U launched at a minimum SKU of $299. Chances are that will drop to $199-$249 by the time PS4 is launched. With PS4 rumored at anywhere from $399-$499 or higher. Most families don't have that kind of income on an expensive luxury so a much cheaper Wii U will be more attractive at that price while PS4 will cater more to the hardcore crowd and enthusiasts. I seriously doubt Wii U will overtake it in sales (in fact, I'm sure it won't), but it will do okay.

4. THE GRAPHICAL LEAP IS NOT THAT BIG......FOR NOW - Remember in 2005 when people compared the 360 to the original X-Boz? Originally, the only real leap was into HD and a lot of those early games didn't look much better. Now, we got Killzone 4 on PS4, but compare that to Crysis 3 on PS3 or 360 and they look about on the same level. Wii U is on par if not more powerful than PS3 and 360 so you can see that those launch titles just don't look like a huge step forward for now. But in a few years they'll really differentiate itself. But it's not gonna be the same as the differences between Wii to 360/PS3.

5. STRONG IP'S...NOT JUST FROM FIRST PARTY - Mario, Zelda, Metroid, they'll all be there for sure and keep the system alive. However, while Nintendo doesn't usually get the 3rd party support Sony and MS do (unless you count portables), there's still several third party titles that are either Wii/Wii U exclusive or started there. Lemme show you some examples.

UBISOFT - Raving Rabbids, Red Steel, Just Dance, ZombiU.

SEGA - The Conduit 1 and 2 , Mario and Sonic Olympics, Sonic Storybook series, Sonic Colors. (Obviously Sega did well with Sonic on Wii.)

CAPCOM - Tatsunoku vs. Capcom, Monster Hunter Series. Taking it away from PSP hurt Sony's sales and I believe is the main reason Vita is doing poorly in Japan.

Not to mention all those smaller publishers that took a chance on the Wii console and hit it big with casual fare like Carnival Games and such. If the third parties keep bringing original, exclusive content to Wii U it should do just fine.

BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY AND THE E-SHOP - Oh, look! I get to keep all my games and saves along with all my downloads! Too bad PS3 owners won't be able to say the same for PS4. Not to mention how cumbersome the PSN shop channel has got while the E-Shop is simple and easy to navigate with a front page for the latest games and deals while having categories like "Top selling" for older titles.

Am I gonna buy a PS4? Probably. The PS3 made me a loyal Sony customer. It would take MS a lot to get me back after going through five 360's. Not to mention gouging the customers with $60 a year LIVE. But whether it's one or the other, they'll always have the same games that will look the same as well outside of a few IP's. That's why I'll always keep a Nintendo system. I'll know I'll get something a little different to play when I'm in the mood.

I can't believe we're still comparing X and KZ. Are you guys for real?

Pachterballs isn't worth conversing with either. Like, really?

I figure more parents will be willing to pick up a Wii U during the holidays for their children over a 400 maybe 500 dollar console. price is still unknown but the Wii U could have a better advantage because of pricing not to forget the ability of off tv play

Which is why Nintendo needs to get it's games out between now and the holidays. Price wise it will likely have the others beat. The key is to make it appear an as a viable alternative in terms of content so when parents especailly see the prices they go towards the lower one initially. I think it can do that with popular Nintendo brands and a few key third party games that look really appealing visually even if they don't look as good as the PS4/720 titles. In the end games on all three systems will look great. The degree of great will certainly vary of course and will simply vary even more when it comes to the different genres and art styles used. No one system is going to have ugly looking games though. Can we at least all agree on this?

Agree on something? You'll have an easier time in the U.S. Congress. ;) But in general, yes.

Just looking the idea that OP would ask his question means somewhere he feels the PS4 reveal was "not so hot." But, the Wii U needs games and marketing irrespective of the PS4 reveal. Early adopters/gamers and publishers have been expecting things for this Holiday for some time. Depending on the timing of both PS4 and 720 release and their price points, Wii U should have a solid collection of console exclusives compared to the other two, at launch. But I'm not so sure MS (and Sony to a lesser extent) will make it so easy for Wii U to compete on price alone. Cross-gen games will make it slightly tougher for PS4/720 but not as much for Wii U.

Not if Sony and Microsoft drops the price of PS3 and 360. There is a reason why it's not dropped yet. It's going to happen probably at E3.

I agree especially when CoD will be making another appearance on the Wii U. Its a no brainer for a parent to purchase a cheaper console with the newest version of CoD than to spend money on a next gen console plus the newest CoD. I forsee "hardcore' gamers adopting the Ps4 and Nextbox during initial launch with more "casual" gamers, strapped for cash parents looking for the next best thing with cooler features than the current consoles.. and oh yeah Mario especially since most parents probably grew up playing mario and arent as informed as the people who frequent video game websites.

That happens generally with new product announcements. Pachter (the real Pachter, not Pachterballs) could probably explain this better than I could, since it's somewhat in his area of work, but I'll do my best.

To these stock holders, these products announced aren't viewed as having the potential to make money and move the company forward. Instead, they signify the amount of money the company has lost in their investment into the product, and will continue to lose as they move forward into the manufacturing and shipping process. To these stockholders, there is no guarantee that the product will net in the revenue necessary to cover all the cost involved in the product and move the company forward.

This is how conservative share holders operate. They move out when the company puts in an investment, and then return if the situation favors in buying stock once the product is close to selling or has been selling.

Nintendo's went up because the image of the competitive environment became clearer at that point. Sony put in a lot of money in the R&D, and its clear that this is going to bring out a heavy MSRP that the overall consumer market will not be in favor of in comparison to a cheaper system like the Wii U. They could also be factoring in the likely price cut that, while there will be a bit of a loss there, will probably net more business than a $399-599 system.

Given the glamor and glitz that will come with next gen consoles people who cant afford to purchase one may look to get the next best thing, I for one being a parent of a 10 year old would choose the Wii U because I can tell my kid hey its not the PS4 or XBOX 720 but this one has a cool controller that you can use as an alternative screen and brag to your friends lol. In tems of cool and appeal I would pick the Wii U for a child over the current consoles anyday.

Depends on how old the kids are I suppose. I don't think "Hey, check out this second screen." will really hold that much weight compared to, "Hey, how are you finding GTAV."

True, but Wii-U doesn't really have the advantage in this case. Sony and Microsoft wouldn't mind seeing their older console sell more due to the profit margins. The consumers usually buy the cheaper console.

Yeah but.....um.... [insert X gif]

This also applies to ps4/720 too.

lol, pricing will be interesting this holiday for all the related consumer electronics. it's gonna be fun!

Depends on how old the kids are I suppose. I don't think "Hey, check out this second screen." will really hold that much weight compared to, "Hey, how are you finding GTAV."

GTAV is on PS360. Kids still like/want a Wii U. It's more likely people will have a PS360 + Wii U than a PS360 + PS4/720 by the end of this holiday. It's never as black and white as people claim, nor is it reasonable to have confidence in what our opinions of the children's market is. It's not as simple as "check out this second screen" vs "GTAV" or "GDDR5 Killzone"

And he'll scream, "Yay! Another Mario game!" with a genuine smile ;)

not sure if your being sarcastic, but my son has all the Mario games for his 3Ds and guess who bought them all with pleasure? Hes actually playing LBP now on my Vita as I type this. We will see which console has a better holiday this year in terms of sales. Im getting both next gen consoles day 1 because I already have a Wii U and gaming is my outlet other than p!@#y.

I think Wii U system sales may be affected by PS360 getting a holiday price slash. It's too early to tell with its release schedule being a complete mystery though.

Advantages of Wii U over PS4 in terms of sales and level of appeal to the mass market:

-Less expensive hardware. This is a big one especially with the economy still bad.
-Nintendo's stellar 1st party software which actually moves tons of hardware.
- Wii U gamepad. It's interesting gameplay applications will come more to fruition as more games are released.
- Product differentiation. PS4 and next Xbox are likely to be identitical.

Disadvantages of Wii U:

-Probably won't get most multiplats.

That's the only disadvantage that really is important in appealing to the mass market.

It looks like to me Wii U is going to outsell PS4 and the next Xbox. Even if Wii U is a 2nd console to Sony's and Microsoft's new console the Wii U will mathematically outsell either one 2 to 1. Of course I am just speculating and I could be wrong but I seriously doubt it :)

No one buys a Nintendo system to be wowed by its graphics or tech, at least not as their main focus.

Nintendo's selling point has always been their quality first party.
That being said, the WiiU need to start releasing more first party games to stay relevant.

Not since the snes... ah those were the days!

all signs point to you being totally wrong. its current performance will be aided by future games, but not nearly enough to stifle the excitement over the next gen beginning with the PS4/Next Xbox.

No....and I just wrote a big long post about how Nintendo will do just fine, but I also live in reality. The Wii U has a lot of catching up to do in terms of sales. It's got long legs and will do fine, but beating the PlayBox is not gonna happen.

What excitement? The excitement of being able to play the slightly shinier version of last gen games for $400+? Where exactly is the PS4 going to make it's millions I wonder. It's certainly not in Japan based on what we've seen so far. Microsoft could screw up America but otherwise a, likely expensive, console with very few exclusives and no blu-ray/DVD 'new media' to get it out the door like the previous Playstations will likely struggle initially.
Don't get me wrong, there do seem to be some people here excited for it and more to them! They're getting what they want in a high tech box, just it seems to be for no one else but the hardcore Sony minority.
