The Nintendo hate has being going of for years.
In the 90's, Sonic and Sega was perceived to be "Cool" in the way that Nintendo and Mario never was. Can you imagine the kinds of articles you'd have if sites like IGN existed back then?

Yeah, who the hell wants to play as a blue collar worker, a dude in tights and a girl?

me

edit: wow, we're on fire today. ~940 posts in 21½ hours. I wonder if this madness will continue through to the next week and even increase.

I mean, it's crazy to say this right now, but that UE4 demo, the Zelda demo, and all these launch titles are probably going to like like complete and utter shit like 3 years from now, compared to the games then. Just think about that. Crazy.

Everyone apparently wants Avatar graphics but Unreal 4 gives us Lord of the Rings

How do you know the third-party situation is resolved? We basically know nothing about Next-Gen right now. We have no real details about Nintendo's online system, we can only guess how strong the system is, we don't know if it will support UE4, we only know of a handful of games, we really don't know who is on-board and who isn't, we have no idea how strong or even what the 720/Ps4 will be, and we don't even know if the Wii-U supports TWO U-pads.

Hasn't this generation taught us that NO ONE is guaranteed to win the next one?

I DON'T think it's fixed... yet. I think that if some of the early core titles sell we'll see a fairly significant reversal of fortune though. I've seen enough already to know that the chances of this happening are fairly high. All I'm saying when it comes down to it, banking on the market leader to fail at anything isn't a smart bet. Even when that something is recapturing a significant chunk of audience they let go by gambling on motion controls and weaker hardware.

Sony and MS have to beat Nintendo, not the other way around. This is Nintendo's generation to lose. Nothing's certain but come on, play the odds here. Nintendo won't be launching a $600 over engineered console and I see no other obvious achilles heel issues thus far so...

At the time, I didn't own any console, but I definitely came away with that impression.

There were gaming mags! (well I only read a few...I vaguely remember them as less cynical).
And I'm going on the official record now to say that the release of these pics is so that the word about it can get out, and expectations set, for when Epic do the worldwide reveal running on Wii U at E3. Confirmed. No other scenario can unfold from here on in as I've explored all possibilities. If you see any high-end PC's, please ignore them.
And the Gaf's reaction will be "well no wonder it looked like crap, it was running on Wii U."

IGN put up its second survey of what 62,000 gamers want out of the next-generation. Overall, the results for the Wii U were poor. Click the link for to see the rest of the coverage.

Which is your most desirable home console?

- 63% are very or somewhat interested in PS4
- 60% are very or somewhat interested in Xbox 3
- 40% are very or somewhat interested in Wii U
- 30% are very or somewhat interested in a console from Valve
- 18% are very or somewhat interested in a console from Apple
- 10% are very are somewhat interested in generic unified Cloud-based system

What Specific Upgrades do you want ?

- 72% want major graphics upgrade
- 44% want more media connectivity
- 40% want streaming digital games
- 37% want innovative controls
- 10% want smaller, sleeker hardware

The numbers for PlayStation 4 are broadly similar (see chart). For Wii U, people are more likely to opt for a new controller (44%) and are less interested in a graphic upgrade (57%).

Would you pay $300-400 for Next-Gen consoles?

- 33% for Xbox 3
- 35% for PS4
- 13% for Wii U
- 12% for Valve console
-8% for Apple console

-Only 11% (Xbox 720) and 14% (PS4) say they will pay more than $400
-23% say they’ll pay $250-$300 for Wii U against 13% who’ll pay $300-$400 and 3% who’ll pay more than $400

I always find these surveys ridiculous.

We know NOTHING about the 720/PS4, and very little about the Wii U. How could they possibly know what they want? Might aswell be asking which company someone prefers.

.

I talked to a developer recently who worked with UE3, Unity and NintendoWare and he praised NintendoWare as the best engine he ever worked with.

It would be great to see Nintendo presenting it at GDC at some point...
Really? That's... unexpected. But then again, assuming Nintendo uses the engine internally as well, and most likely has about a dozen highly capable teams contributing, it should be very feature rich, flexible and streamlined, and compatible with a wide variety of possible pipeline configurations. Would really love to learn more about the technology.

It's pretty much a fanboy survey, same as you'd get (well, with different answers) if it was up on beardnintendo.com

Maybe having a well-designed engine to start with is why Wii got third party entries of multiplats in the beginning at all. Maybe they would have given up entirely otherwise on account of the lack of cross-platform engines at the start and the (in such a scenario) lack of an appropriate alternative on the system.

Scre Avatar movie graphics, I want avast cartoon animation!

I would be happy with Dragon's Lair quality graphics (but in real time, no pre-drawn cells, maybe at a higher resolution). ;)

ninjedit: and, no, I'm not talking about the side-scroller port. :P

realedit: I legitimately had no idea that this launches tomorrow

Also, the problem with IGN polls. You can fill them in several times over.

Is there some news I missed about a Nintendo engine?

So... could Wii U run this:

maybe at 720p?

That IS Wii U - Believe!

What we know is, Nintendo is making it a priority to have third-party developers on board. They have designed their console to match the development styles of other consoles. Power means diddly when it comes to ports, it's about supporting the programming style and a base set of features, something that the Wii did not do. This is something Nintendo says they are providing this time, and as proof they showed a number of third-party games last year which will be coming to Wii-U.

I dunno about *this* generation proving anything, but you're right, the previous generation's successes are never proven to continue on to the next one. But that doesn't matter when asking if third parties are going to include your system for their ports - even systems that sell horribly, like PS3 during its first two years, got lots of ports from third parties.

Seems like something they need to improve to compete next gen. I feel like they have so much potential with the VC what with the vast library of games at their disposal, but they don't take advantage of it as much as they should. Are there weekly sales? Are there at least ads for games? I know everyone hates ads, but they usually foster more sales for titles.

Having gamertags are a given. No more archaic number code bullshit. It was fine, but that shouldn't even be considered for next generation. If Nintendo wants people playing games online on their system, they need to at least have that.

I'm glad that they're planning day and date releases for full titles. That's definitely a sign that they're at least interested, and a step in the right direction.

Yeah... it was not a guy working on AAA games so I assume that the engine is very flexible and easy to use, especially with smaller teams and smaller projects, compared to UE3.
But it would be interesting to get to know more about it, especially with a more competitive hardware coming up...

As buddy-buddy as Capcom is with Nintendo right now they were probably the first ones to know about the Wii-U and that had to have been at least a year and a half ago. That's plenty of time to get their resources straight to at least have a version of RE6 Wii-U in development at the date of that interview.

A release any later then the PC version would not be a good sign.

Lack of RE6 on Wii U would just puzzle me more than anything. Developing two RE titles for the 3DS in its first year but not giving the Wii U a cheap port of RE6 strikes me as an odd set of business decisions.

Didn't Sony once claim that the PS2 or PS3 would be capable of Toy Story level graphics?

Umm..... I am playing the odds here. Nintendo hasn't had significant third party support since the SNES (It even failed to with the second best selling home console ever in the Wii). Once again, I never said the Wii-U would fail and I have yet to make a prediction on who will "win" this generation (it is way to early to tell). But I have seen no signs yet pointing to the Wii-U having better western third-party support then the GCN.

From Confession thread:
Since I'm being more careful this time around (though not *quiet*), I wanted to *confess* that I' m currently posting on Gaf under another nickname than "Sennorin", which was banned without any real justification.

I won't go into detail about who I *am*, but if you ever clicked on one of the Wii U-hype-threads, you've probably read some of my postings. So, just wanted to get this out there and let's have a great E3 2012. Eternal Darkness 2 for Wii U and Paper Mario 3DS, gonna be great!

Who are you :o

Never did this:

1) Price? - 300$

2) Release date? - November 6th

3) Bullshit xbox360-based Multiplier Equivalent? - No idea

4) Nintendo conference surprise(s)? - Wii U more powerful than expected; awesome 1st party game(s)

5) Predict Miyamoto's role/costume/appearance context in this year's show. - escaped prison convict in orange jumpsuit, trying to escape the casual audience's prison

6) Any special MS or Sony predictions? - Microsoft has a complete shit-show, with one highlight; Sony has a solid, but uneventful show, besides one or two surprises

7) You know we're going to hear some, umm, interesting excuses from third parties. So.. what'll be your favorite? - My dog ate my tablet

8) Any special E3 plans/arrangements of your own? Taking off from work? Skipping a final exam? - watch it on TV

9) Your favorite bullshit gaming media critique of Nintendo's performance at E3 this year? - Peter Molyneux farts on a microphone for 3 minutes straight, then asks you how emotionally invested you were.

10) Your own predicted complaint/peeve/angering issue regarding Nintendo's E3 performance this year? - Not enough 1st party games.

Didn't Sony once claim that the PS2 or PS3 would be capable of Toy Story level graphics?
PS2, IIRC.

I actually kind of wonder if we're at the point where we probably could render Toy Story-level graphics without too much issue. It wasn't exactly the most detailed movie in existence, pretty much being the first fully CG one and all. Still, there are still details like fully polygonal blades of grass that they could get away with in render farms, but probably not a real-time situation...

That's besides the point. The point is, you can't just scale down the lighting. That would mean devs would have to either remove lots of light sources, or, by hand go in and script/bake the lighting into sequences.

Don't some consoles games already do this? If so then nothing special about it except that UE4 will finally support it.

So.. a question, and pardon my ignorance here..
are these images supposed to be representative of average/typical games with UE4, or are they more representative of the high-end that the engine is capable of?

(oh.. and I'm not the guy from the secrets thread. I promise!)

I'm sticking to my guess that Microsoft will do the but before you leave thing at the very end of their conference with a bunch of target videos to try to take attention from Nintendo. Give the gamers a taste of the future (even if the videos are a bit exaggerated) so they stay brand-loyal.

I'm loving playing all that "proof" that Nintendo provided for strong Western Third Party support for 3DS during E3 2010. Oh wait........

Assassin's Creed, Arkham City, and Darksiders 2. These are all from western third party publishers that full supported the GCN and Wii when they could (Wii made it impossible to port most of their titles though). Show me Bethesda, Valve, Crytek, Dice, Bungie, Bioware, Rockstar, Take-Two, etc. at E3 Nintendo, and you will have me convinced that Wii-U will not be another GCN when it comes to western third-party support.

I don't think it's representative of UE4 high-end, more like a showcase of certain UE4 features.

The strangest thing is, despite Sony doing badly at the moment, despite the Vita's absolutely abysmal launch, I still haven't seen a single article suggesting that Sony should go third party and make games for iPhone - whereas you see lots of sites practically demanding this of Nintendo.

Despite bleeding money for the past 500 years, Sony is a much larger company that so many people are invested in. They aren't just a hardware company. Movies, music, film production products, tvs and computers (lol) and so on. It'll take a lot to bring them down.

Don't some consoles games already do this? If so then nothing special about it except that UE4 will finally support it.

...yes... a lot of games do this. But he's saying UE4 would work for Wii U... that would be possible, but it doesn't mean down porting easier. People would take these simple to make fully dynamic worlds while if they down port it, they'd have to go through the "last gen" process of scripting everything.
