Gaming Press? Probably not. Though I am sure there could be a few who have stupidly low expectations that could be exceeded

The gaming press at large expects on-par at the absolute best, so I think in that sense it exceeds their expectations. :p Just in a, "It's better than expected, but not quite where we'd like it to be," kind of way.

Honestly, without knowing anything and without making any concrete predictions, I have a feeling the Nintendo E3 conference will be mind blowing. I'm talking better than E3 2010 - which was one of the very rare cases when even most of the enthusiast press was completely on board. I expect a great show, tons of games, and very unexpected surprises. Nintendo had extremely impressive showings unveiling the Wii in 2006 and the 3DS in 2010, and now we also have panic mode Nintendo which gave us stuff like the 3DS Conference 2011, one of the events with the highest density of new announcements I've ever seen, and finishing with a completely unexpected megaton to boot. Nintendo might even exceed all that this time.

I'd tend to agree with you, but mainly on the basis that we'll be seeing Nintendo franchises in HD for the first time, after over a decade on Gamecube-based hardware. There's also the fact that, apart from Pikmin 3, we have almost no idea what Wii U games they're going to show, so there will definitely be some surprises.

Did we ever figure out who made the bird demo? Last I heard everyone was being really coy about it, with wink wink nudge nudge and all of that.

Were they really being coy though? AFAIK, it was just that one interview with Reggie where he said 'I can't say', which could just be that he literally did not know/recall that bit of detail. It seems like such an odd detail to keep secret. I'm 90% sure that it was put together by Nintendo own R&D team.

Oh I agree.

If anyone pays attention, they'll notice that the gaming media has been trying to kill Wii U before the can even properly show it at E3.

They've thrown every negative article about it possible from low specs, to nobody having interest in it, to devs finding the dev kits hard to work with.

The media has thrown everything but the kitchen sink to kill Wii U's hype and excitement.

It's no wonder investors are scared of Wii U's future. The media is trying to kill the console before anyone knows much about it.

I believe it.

I saw the same thing happening with the Wii. They tried, but failed, and found-out that no, they don't matter as much as they think they do. 1Up and G4 were particularly bad at times.. :)

I've always thought Epic had a hand in it.
Their "Water meet fish!" quote and the fact that the demo features a fish jumping out of water...

"'If Nintendo made a system that could run our engine, we'd be on it like water on fish.' And so when someone asked me what I thought about the Wii U, I said, 'Water, meet fish.'"

People are reading far too much into that quote.

It would be pretty hilarious, though, if BY2K were somehow right, and Mark Rein goes up on stage at Nintendo's conference at E3 and says "You're probably thinking that you're about to get your first view of our new Unreal Engine 4, but you're wrong ... because you already got your first view of UE4 last year" and then shows the bird demo again, along with some newer UE4 demos. The meltdowns would go down in GAF folklore.

Edit:
Ninja Gaiden 3 for what it's worth.

Not worth much to me (and I wasn't even a fan of the series to begin with).

Hmm, so there's obvious things that we haven't seen yet. Well I guess it won't cripple the system in its early life, a point that you've already made, bg.

I don't know, guess I was underwhelmed by what they showed.

What I saw in those screens was more or less what my original expectations for how Wii U's best games would look like.

I've said this before, but I am convinced that the bird demo was made in Kyoto. This is because the setting is extremely reminiscent of the grounds of a famous Kyoto temple, the Kinkakuji

Wow, hadn't seen that before, the demo's definitely influenced by it.

Keep in mind that we're at a point where graphical improvements will be far more apparent in videos than screenshots. I'll wait until I see actual games running with the engine before I pass judgement.

Here's my completed E3 Bingo card

I rather like that new Wii U logo for some reason. >_>

We have to get price and release date. I've been thinking that's a given. I would understand if it was coming out next year, but this baby is ready to come out of the oven. They need to let the whole world know when, and how much.

I'm sure this was already handled by a bunch of people, but just in case:

E3 is Nintendo's testbed for new consoles. They use it to gauge interest in their upcoming products. It was in part because of the frenzy at E3, for instance, that retailers asked Nintendo to raise the initial MSRP of the Wii to $250.

Similarly, if the feedback for a product were intensely negative, they would have the opportunity to retool it and plan for a later release date. Though the waiting for the release date is probably more a matter of wanting to make sure they have a certain minimum number of parts and/or systems already in the warehouses before they commit to a release.

(edit: Also, Nintendo pretty much nearly always makes their big releases on the Sunday before Black Friday, so they practically don't need to tell us)

Okay, now time to start catching up…

The Atari (which created this segment) along with Commodore and Sega platforms are long gone. Only Nintendo survived from that initial wave, and currently, they are on death watch. Sony is only in better shape because it has broader business, but the company is hardly what anyone calls health. While Microsoft can likely last forever, even the Xbox is looking a bit old. Given a choice between an iPad and an Xbox, it would appear that most continue to pick an iPad.

They said that Sony is in better shape than Nintendo. They really said that. Da fuk?

What it says if anything is that even with impressive tech behind it, people will be "tripped up" by the art style and will have a hard time telling the difference. The lighting and tessellation effects were the most noticeable things in those pics to me, but as shown in the UE4 thread a lot of people seemed to be underwhelmed.

If Nintendo took the proper measures they could look at the features available in current GPUs and/or talk directly with AMD/Epic to know what they needed. Considering the hardware UE4 is running on, the only reason IMO UE4-based games couldn't run on Wii U is because Nintendo didn't put forth the effort to make sure the GPU had the necessary features.

I thought the press was pretty positive on the 3DS when they first unveiled it at E3. It was only after launch sales weren't that great that the press was down on it.

Honestly, I would like to see a Metroid tech demo of sorts. Nothing elaborate, but just something to give people a direct comparison to their previous system. Right now all we have to compare is a Mario title, which doesn't look anywhere near as impressive as the last console mario. It looks pretty decent to me(boring, but decent visuals I guess), but we know how this will go over with people. Maybe it's been overhauled though, who knows.

We need something to make a more direct comparison again, like we did with the Zelda tech demo. You know people are stupid. They didn't even know the system was a new one when nintendo said they would be unveiling a new system, then showed a new system(after telling the crowd it was new, again) with features that were impossible to implement on the Wii.

For completeness's sake, we do have vids of Rayman: Legends. I think it looks a hell of a lot better visually than what little we saw of New Super Mario Bros. Mii, though I don't think it comes close to really stressing the system, either.

edit: Damn, things really slowed down here. Still, you guys get kudos (or the shame finger, I'm not sure which) for pushing through four consecutive thousand-post days this week.

So, everyone except IGN.

I thought Nintendo's Press Conference was the weakest of the 3, though.

And just... just listen to the Microsoft guy...

3DS Hype from RawMeatCowboy / the site you Go to for Nintendo news' twitter feed

I just got confirmation of a 3DS game to be revealed at E3. It's a franchise I love. Sorry to tease, but that's all I can say!

Recently, I've been trying to really get into this thread, but there's simply way too much doom and gloom. I'm totally excited about the system (specs and all), but anyone reading this thread as an outsider has to be thinking there's way more negativity here than anything positive. It's kind of sad.

It's better that way because E3 will wash away the sorrow even if temporarily.
