The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

I wonder if Nintendo will have anything that rivals the production values, polish and technical wizardry of The Last of Us, Crysis 3 and God of War: Ascension.
I seriously can't imagine it, and it's not even a slight towards Nintendo or anything, but I just have this barrier in my head possibly enhanced by the wii generation that just makes it so hard for me to believe that they are capable of something like that.

The grandeur of Uncharted/Last of Us/God of War 3 is something I'd love to see somehow emulated with nintendo franchises. Or at least A nintendo franchise.

Something unique to Nintendo's platform. Not a third party port that can be found everywhere else. Games like The Last of Us and God of War will represent pretty much the best of what you can milk out of current generation hardware. It's part design (game and assets), part technical wizardry, and part budget. They're expensive, glorious looking games.

Crysis 3 probably isn't fair if they show it on PC, where it is bound to shine. Same goes for Metro. Not sure how the console builds of either will shape up. From what we know, Crysis 3 is not coming to the Wii U yet, and given the delay I doubt Metro will be demoed for the Wii U.

So, I'm wondering if Nintendo will have a exclusive game on show, and not a tech demo, that can really turn heads towards their direction. Because what I mentioned will, in the realm of graphical showcases, be their biggest competition when it comes to making average joe go "oh wow that looks incredible".

I feel like MonolithSoft and Retro are perhaps our two bext bets to see games that turn heads like that

But really depends on the type of game

Let's be honest, The Last of Us, Crysis 3 and God of War: Ascension, won't be anywhere near as polished as Nintendo's top first party games.

Nintendo first party games are always amongst the best as far as polish and technical wizardry goes.

Higher production values is the only area where Nintendo could possibly be beaten there.

I think you're severely underestimating Naughty Dog in Santa Monica in terms of polish. That's pretty much their thing.

All three of those games will be graphical showcases because of their technical wizardry, budget and asset polish. Naughty Dog is well ahead of nearly everybody in the industry in that area, and I speak as someone who doesn't really gravitate towards their games. There's no honesty in saying these games "wont be anywhere near" the kind of technical polish Nintendo is capable of.

Right...

Naughty Dog are the technical wizards. The Last Of Us, I'll be fucking amazed if Nintendo bring anything to E3 that looks as promising as that game, to be frank.

Fair enough with asset polish I suppose. I was thinking all around game polish, of which Nintendo are always hard to beat.

Production values will definitely be interesting this gen for Nintendo though. Something like Mario Kart has always felt a little cheap on that side, compared to say Smash Bros.

Well ND's foray into survival horror has been foreshadowed for years now.

Enemies in t-shirts taking 20 rounds to the chest have been a staple of theirs all this gen.

I think Nintendo can and will make stuff that graphically surpasses what is around today. Stuff like Brawl and MP3 and even Super Mario Galaxy show that they have the chops when it comes to art direction, and that's 90% of the battle to begin with.

I'm fully expecting Wii games in 720p, so no, nothing approaching The Last of Us.
haha although I know that won't be true (I hope), I've been saying the same thing. We're gonna get dolphin games. And I know people post the pics and say "I'd be happy with that!"...but cmon.

My hopes are sky high.

Based on Uncharted? I've always been underwhelmed by everything else they have done from a technical stand point.

Eventually they should, easily. Ninty has been working and training for the switch over to HD for ages now, and last time their teams were on fair footing hardware wise Nintendo's games were always up there with the best from any other platform in those aspects. They haven't got worse at developing since then, their first party Wii games were fantastic, and a new 3D mario, Zelda, or retro game (and MonolithSoft's new game) should be at least as good looking and polished as those games, and quite possibly look better due to the more powerful hardware.

I mean, perhaps not launch software, but Nintendo's best studio's are still elite and they will have the superior guns to work with for a year before anything mroe capable comes to the console scene, and the style of many of nintendo's games (whimsical, stylized) will possibly still allow them to have some of the most beautiful games of the entire generation, even accounting for PS4/720, who won't be nearly as noticiably visually above Wii-U as PS360 are above Wii, and even so the galaxy games, xenoblade and Skyward Sword are still some of my personal favorite visual experiences of the gen (I have a PS3 and many of those games are pretty too, but there is alot to be said for great art direction and style, which Nintendo nails even on lesser hardware.

As for launch software... I could see Pikmen 3 being super beautiful, but if it started off a Wii title it may not be quite up there. If Retro has been developing a new Metroid Prime or Star Tropics like I suspect those could easily match the best looking games likely to show up on other platforms... Also a new IP could be staggering if one of Nintendo's studios has been covertly working on one for a long time.

to be fair there were three uncharteds, each raising the bar. it's not like they've done any other games this gen.

I hope all those games with high production values don't increase the number of droughts by absorbing many human resources. Those games are nice, but I want a constant stream of games and I fear those two objectives collide.

that's why the 3ds is more exciting than the wii u for me.

Um, yeah, based on Uncharted. They haven't really done anything else in a while. Each game looked better than the last, even when the first one is still looking good, and The Last of Us looks even better than U3 too.

Here how it's going to work. (FOR REAL THIS TIME!)
First, we need a host, that will stay for the whole hour, recording the session to later edit it and put it up on GAF so other people can listen to the reactions and discussions.
The host will need to put have all the participants Skype IDs, as he will invite them to the conference call OR set up the mumble server.

EVERYBODY WHO WANTS TO PARTICIPATE CAN. There is no limit! We'll then divide everyone into groups of 4. Each group will have 15 minutes of discussion, after that the host will demand the current group leave the call and invite the next group.

The groups won't be made today. I will only list who will participate and we'll divide later.

It'll surely be interesting to see how fast Nintendo catches up with other companies developing HD games. But in the end I think Nintendo will excel. They surely are home to very talented people. And didn't Retro hire some developers with HD console experience recently?

And we have to remember that Nintendo is company that develops both software and hardware. While GoW, Last of Us and Crysis 3 will all be excellent games in terms of technical execution they are still developed outside of the hardware teams. I firmly think that it greatly benefits Nintendo EAD groups when they work with the hardware teams (this was brought up on some Iwata Asks -interviews I believe?)

the last of us is the game with uncanny valley ellen page right
not anymore, check the latest trailer, they changed her up.

Also I was never saying Nintendo should do this with all their games, it shouldn't slow down their whole lineup, just ONE franchise at least. Their big showpiece or something. Metroid is a great candidate.

Their hiring spree, the face that they've been making games with higher assets for quite some time now.. I'm pretty confident that Nintendo will handle whatever transition they experience pretty well.

What's the latest gameplay footage available? Interested in seeing more of it in action after that original cinematic trailer.

Naughty Dog is up there, for sure, but i'd argue that Retro's Metroid Prime games have at least as much polish and also have very high production values. The amount of work that they put into each and every texture and area is staggering, just like Naughty Dog's. Monolithsoft will be able to put something staggering together if Xenoblade is any indication too, imagining those draw distances, overworld and environment in a dedicated HD project blows my mind.

Those are probably the two studio's Ninty has that would put out something with the production values as Naughty Dog Santa Monica, but as far as polish goes most EAD games are among the most polished when released, and they are well known to withhold releasing games until they are as perfect as they will be.

My hope is, that this is Retro's mystery game.

If it ends up being shown at E3, then I hope this is exactly what Retro's game does.

Either way, we will find out in just over a week

If i'm not mistaken Nintendo already uses HD assets in most of their big games, that's why they were able to make such a pretty Zelda demo for E3 2011 in such a short time using Twilight Princess assets, plus Nintendo has been preparing for the HD jump for forever, both in R&D and in the massive hiring spree they have recently had. They shouldn't have much trouble at all making the jump, it's on their own terms, their own hardware and they've seen it coming forever.

To be able to make games like Uncharted and God of War, you need great knowledge of the hardware to be able to pull of that level of detailed graphics. So even if none of those developers worked on designing the PS3, they sure know the hardware well enough :) Out of curiousity, how many of the Nintendeo developers work on both hardware and software?

I'm also interested to see how Nintendo makes the jump to HD. I think that they will do it just fine. Really looking forward to see their games.

Looks good, but using this as an example makes it seem like you are referring to the art style and not the technical capability. Don't get me wrong as I want the Mario franchise to keep this art style, but from a technical perspective the Wii U version will make huge improvements on the art or the game.

It can't get much worse than now.

Man, E3 needs to get here sooner. Does anyone here think there could be a showing of the PS4 and Nextbox? I think a PS4 is a possibility. It'd be interesting to see how people would compare and contrast the two systems together.

I don't imagine a 2d Mario platformer or Pikmin 3 being visual showcases. They'll definitely have an exclusive visual power house on show. I just wonder what game it will be...

Haha, is that a good or bad thing?

I would have cited the insane number of lurkers.

(they aren't all bad, shout out to linkgus and co, you know who you are)

I'd be more than happy to give up my spot so a thread veteran could hop in. I just threw my name in to try and be a little more active in the thread. Huge Nintendo fan and loving the threads so far.

I'm not saying it will but Pikmin 3 might actually be a showstopper depending on how they do it.

Pikmin 2 is secretly one of the best looking games of that generation and the amount of stuff you can do at one time without any drop in framerate (most of the time) is incredible.

Well I'm in.

And does anyone else find "The Last of Us" to be a pretty mediocre name for what could be a future franchise?

Huh? Haha, I don't think I was referring to that with that post. :p The IRC, actually.

I think we'll at least see peeks at what the machines will be capable of. Beyond that, I'm not sure. It's near-impossible to top enthusiasm for new hardware (Nintendo will be an also-ran at next year's E3, for example), so I don't expect to see a complete absence of those platforms.

With the PS3 lineup and Vita, i would be surprised if Sony talks about PS4 at this year's E3. This also makes me wonder if Nintendo will say anything about the Wii at all, or if they will only focus on 3DS and WiiU.

Why does this sound insanely pointless? Espically if you are already having constant discussion in text format.

There's no shot of it happening. I think GTTV's announcement about unveiling UE4 after E3 pretty much sealed that door shut. UE4 would be unveiled at the Sony or MS conference if they were showing their consoles. That's why all eyes are on Nintendo this year. They've got a chance to blow away people by being the only next-gen console at the conference.
