The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

A problem with a lot of outdated Japanese development policy, where the bosses high up in the company are calling all the shots, and 'low level' employees are restricted to doing exactly what they're told. Something not working with the game? Bugs? Design problems? Not playing well? The solution has to come down from above, rather than those working on the game quickly collaborating and coming to a solution of their own. It makes for incredibly slow, stupid development, especially on massive projects like Versus.

I see, thanks. That does make no sense whatsoever.

Your suggestion isn't evolving Star Fox, it's changing Star Fox. It's looking at the franchise and saying "what should we take away", and then turning it into something else.

Metroid, Zelda and Mario did not evolve by doing this. They took their foundations and grew them. They played with existing ideas, themes and design to create fresh iterations.

Something does need to be done with Star Fox, but if doing that involves rebooting the series as a grim, serious overhaul then you might as well build a new serious flight sim franchise entirely. Doing this does not evolve Star Fox. It simply takes a title and stick it on something that's completely new.

If you keep the arwing gameplay and the anamorphic animal characters, I don't see how adding a darker edge like Majoras Mask to the series would make it not feel like Star Fox. The franchise takes place in space, and space should feel more intimidating and overwhelming for a player.

That's like people who were saying Metroid Prime wouldn't feel like Metroid if you make it first person because it would hurt the platforming elements that Metroid is known for.

Amazing that the same country which developed the Toyota Production System can't adopt it, in some fashion, towards this industry.

Ok, so why not show something from everything you have for the next 1-1.5 years? I'm not saying show something from every prototype ever!
I got no problems with that since all of those games are probably pretty far in development.

ps. You said we should get footage from every team that has the dev kits, whether it would only be the logo or something.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.

If you mean Majora's Mask level of 'darkness' then yes, that would be fine, because Majora's Mask was still distinctly Zelda in its darkness (even if it was the most grim entry in the series).

In the case of Star Fox though I think a lot of Nintendo's problems come down to half hearted attempts at reviving the franchise, along with mangled marketing and fluctuating audiences. I'm not sure Nintendo knows what it wants from Star Fox, or what its audience wants.

I do think Reggie should end the conference with "And one more thing..."

It'd be a nice callback, and they could reveal Pikmin 3 or whatever.

You know, I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo let players record their own gameplay videos and share them? Like a crowd sourced version of NSMBWii's auto-play feature.

Think about it.

I like the idea, but I hate when people end their posts with "Think about it." What else should I do with your words?

They were magnificent, no doubt.. but I do wonder sometimes.

The main thing about the TP reveal is that back then, those in attendance allowed themselves to audibly react to what they were seeing. Nowadays, the audience seems to be filled with joyless, desperate-to-be-professional, stiffs.

The audience reaction - that outpouring of emotion - will probably never be seen again. And I think that's a big part of what the TP reveal has going for it when people look back fondly at that special moment in time. We all cheered along with them. We all felt what we were hearing coming from that crowd.

I have mad respect for you but that's bullshit did you hear what happened when they mentioned Smash Bros last year the crowd loved it IMHO it's all about what Nintendo shows that makes them react. Every gamer in someway shape or form is a Nintendo fan they may try to deny it but it's true....

Hype yourselves up all you want, you'll have to deal with it when the train derails. Personally, I got burned from last year. I didn't even sleep the night before, and yet the Wii U reveal was so pedestrian and lacking. The only thing that made up for it was the 3DS stuff, and even that was lacking in third-party stuff compared to the previous E3.

The content should be there. It will boil down to execution. If executed right 2006 should become #2 in the Nintendo E3 rankings.

This makes me think... maybe Nintendo attempted a Legend of Zelda and Pikmin crossover which turned into the Minish Cap!
But the Minish didn't do anything that Pikmin do. If they did, it might be interesting to see them again.

Strangely enough, Mario x Pikmin would work because Pikmin was originally a Mario experiment, with a game called "100 Marios" being rumored for a long time as well.

I think gamers have been spot on about wanting Treasure to do Star Fox. That team is probably most qualified.

If Star Fox took tips from Sin and Punishment on Wii, it could make for an interesting game.

The problem is how can Nintendo market Star Fox. That's a bigger problem than even game quality.

“If I didn’t have a strict gag order on me, I’d love to talk about all the great features that we have, but what I can tell you is that it’s a next generation platform, and you should keep your eyes open. We’ll obviously be using the unique controller that it has to its utmost potential, but speaking to specific features or tech effects… well, that’s in Nintendo’s playground right now. And I know that they have plans for E3.” - Jeremy Greiner, Creative Manager at Vigil Games

But they keep saying that the Wii-U visuals are only about as good as current gen platforms. Decide already, goddamn it.

I posted earlier: I can hear certain groups of gamers and journalists calling that device a "gimmick" already. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Anything that alters the way you can play games, even if the older way is preserved, is considered a violation of the Game Enthusiast Code. And it's only considered an improvement if it involves increasing some form of computation. What the hell happened to us?

(and yeah.. we are moving quickly tonight. Fun times, indeed. I predict an absolutely frenetic pace as we draw nearer to the hour of truth.)

Good. I'm deputizing you. Just… write down the posts where somebody posts news and send 'em to me on Tuesday. You don't have to take notes on them or anything, just record the post numbers.

By the way, going to bed, but… current Wii U has no optical drive built in. Optical drive is a pretty expensive moving part of the system. In the extreme case, as with the early PS3 run, it can annihilate profits utterly. It would be interesting if Nintendo had a multi-sku setup wherein the cheapest model had neither hard drive nor optical drive. I mean, that would work, given that Nintendo's strategy involves external hard drive expansion and direct download of assumedly all games which would otherwise be available on optical disc.

In fairness, they could show the next console Zelda and Metroid, and I'd still say Pikmin was the best thing at their conference.

That's subjetive tho..

Well said.

Not enough open-mindedness.

I saw in another thread here someone liking the Wii U controller minus the screen.

It wouldn't be modern day Nintendo then and it wouldn't be the Wii U.

The press conference will feature demonstrations and trailers of Ubisoft’s upcoming lineup of franchise hits, including games for the new Nintendo Wii U™, as well as digital titles, special guests and surprise announcements.

Following the press conference, E3 attendees can visit Ubisoft’s booth — #1023, located in the South Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center — to see and play the company’s latest titles. Games available at the booth will include Assassin’s Creed® III, Far Cry® 3, Rayman® Legends, Rocksmith™ and many more. The finale of the ShootMania Marathon, an e-sport competition based on Ubisoft’s ShootMania®: Storm also will be broadcast from the booth on at 11 a.m. PDT, June 6.

“This year’s E3 promises to be one of our biggest and best yet,” said Yves Guillemot, Founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “We’re showcasing the strongest, most competitive collection of core titles we’ve had in years, innovative new games for new platforms and a broad lineup that has something for everyone.”

In a first, Ubisoft is inviting gamers to ask questions to its teams on Uplay®, Ubisoft’s online service dedicated to enhancing the experience of players across games and platforms. The best questions will be selected by one of the guest hosts and asked live during the press conference. Ubisoft also is sending eight select Uplay members to E3, where they will interview teams backstage, preview fans’ favourite games and provide video reports from the show floor. Finally, the Assassin’s Creed III® and Far Cry® 3 teams released two Road To E3 videos showcasing their preparation for the event, and are inviting fans to post their questions on their respective Facebook pages.

Those unable to attend E3 in person can watch the Ubisoft press conference live on YouTube, or embed the live feed on their own sites. Exclusive backstage videos and free content will also be available on http://uplay.com/e3.

I have a few very important things to do that I'm 100% procrastinating on, and when you procrastinate on important things, time flies like you wouldn't believe. So just do that.

It be interested in having one or other other, but not neither.

The arcade disappeared. No one remembers that videogames can be enjoyed all sorts of ways. The Wii remote by itself could do a lot for shooters and racing that ordinary controllers couldn't sufficiently replace before.

The Zapper for Wii U could bring about a Silent Scope revival. Astonishing!

Bah, 'yer all a buncha young'uns. When I was 4 my dad bought one of these, and I played the heck out of it:

telstar+arcade+1.jpeg

Then when I was 7 or 8 we got an Atari 2600 and I REALLY played the heck out of that.

Then I think I was 12ish when we got an NES.

I totally had this when I was a very young lad. Good to see some fellow gen x-ers on here :)

Here's a commercial for it:

lack of volume tho :/

HITCH YOUR TV lol

I wonder if EA will also reveal their Wii U line-up at their own conference.

Being able to alleviate an entire screen during sports games(play calling, team management, etc) sounds like a big deal for me. Not sure if it will matter to the masses though. I would rather have the Wiimote/Nunchuck controller if I had to choose though. Soccer was just too damn good with it, and this is coming from a non-sports fan.
