The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Not open for further replies.
My original plan for E3: Fly 2 1/2 hours to LA, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U, fly back the same day. Some would call it insane, but hey, saves a lot of money not staying at hotels, and I've always wanted to do a same-day trip like that.

Recently I realized, due to flights not leaving LA very late and Staples Center being like an hour and a half away from the airport (via bus/train at least), I'd have to leave E3 at 4ish to make my return flight. And with only 4 hours at E3, my chances of fully geeking out at the Wii-U are remote, unless Nintendo brings a bazillion of the things. Not to mention, 5 hours in flight for 4 hours at E3 just seems wrong.

So my new plan, just put into effect: Fly 2 1/2 hours to LA, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U until E3 closes at 6, go to cheap hotel a few blocks away, sleep, go to E3, geek out at the Wii-U for 4 1/2 more hours, then fly back.

Result: 100% more potential Wii-U geekery. Cost: an extra $200 :( But worth it.

I gather you've made the most sensible choice; with just 4 hours you could have not even get to try the WiiU, what with those long queues are going to be supposedly there, so you could have ended up with just a let-down.

Enjoy the show and give us your report when you can.

Oh man, Sony's got some big things in store for E3.

Tough competition this year.

Being completely serious, im surprised more haven't done the whole "order a pizza" thing like you can do in WoW. Could be easier on Wii U with the screen and all. Not that I would, but im sure someone could use it.

You know what I hope we get for WiiU? A sequel to You Don't Know Jack, with DLC. I've been playing the Facebook version in beta, and it really makes me want to play my Wii copy. I specifically only take it out for parties so that I don't run out of trivia questions, but I love that series ever so. And with the tablet, they could bring the Gibberish Question to consoles.

Couldn't hurt THQ's pockets to release a sequel, either.

Assuming that Ubisoft are using the LyN engine you don't need to worry about Freaks. It will look top notch.

What other games run on the LyN engine? The demo at E3 2011 was built in 2 months? I doubt it. It must have taken quite a bit of time, they probably started it on PC first.

I'm not going to lie, I really can't wait to see all the Reggie pics that supposedly go flying around during E3 here.

This'll be my first GAF console reveal/new generation.

Looking at my join date, I guess I've had one GAF console reveal generation. And six GAF E3s. But there was that year with no real expo.

From Dust, Red Steel 2 and Rabbids Go Home use LyN for example. I believe the engine was actually developed for Beyond Good & Evil 2 (it's the direct successor of the Jade Engine used in the first Beyond Good & Evil), but it scales very well, so Ubisoft ended up using it for quite a few Wii projects.

unless you have a 360 or a great pc, the ps3 is pretty great.

Got my PS3 at the end of last year, and it's filled the game games I couldn't fill on PC and Wii.

- Vanquish
- Bayonetta
- Nier
- Shadows of the Damned
- Uncharteds
- Killzone 2 (guh)
- God of War 3 (double guh)
- Metal Gear Solid 4 (hilarious guh)
- Rayman Origins
- Demon's/Dark Souls
- de Blob 2
- WipeOut Fusion
- Flower
- Dead Nation

This is creepy EC but take away God of War and Killzone and those would be the exact same games I'd have for PS3. Allthough, I do own Shadows of the Damned allready.

yeah, my list is bigger than those five i had. those were just the ps3 exclusives i own. full list is:

1. valkyria chronicles
2. uncharted 2
3. infamous
4. wipeout fusion
5. littlebigplanet
6. littlebigplanet 2
7. ratchet & clank: a crack in time
8. batman: arkham city
9. disgaea 4
10. marvel vs. capcom 3
11. portal 2
12. sonic generations
13. ratchet & clank: tools of destruction
14. 3d dot game heroes

and then uh... a couple others.

on the psn i have trine, trine 2, sonic cd, and stranger's wrath hd. i've only beaten trine out of those.

the 360 was my main 3rd party console this gen as far as multiplats went. then it died last march so all of 2011 i filled up my ps3 with third party games. bayonetta, vanquish, burnout paradise, arkham asylum, the orange box, mirror's edge... all on the 360, along with at least a dozen download games.

and then i have 51 wii games.

For reals though. Is everyone here 100% getting the WiiU at launch, or is there anyone waiting to be sold at E3? I want to say "hey I'm definitely day 1" but so far...this is where I'm at: I may or may not want Pikmin 3 right away, depending on how it has come together.

So that's only 1 game I'm not sure I want day 1 or not even if I were to buy the console. Don't get me wrong, Pikmin is good and it's something I want to play, but not enough to sell me on hardware.

But I guess if Nintendo reveals good launch games and a good launch window then I'll jump in. Multiplat games don't count as I can get them without buying the wiiU, but if I do own that then I'll buy multiplat games for it to show support of course.

I'm not 100% sold because we know so little. I'm excited for E3 though.

Okay, for the next Smash Bros, assuming they do not come out with Gamecube-like wireless classic controllers, or screen-free Wii-U controllers, we are left with:

1. Using Wiimotes,
2. Using Wiimotes+Nunchuck, or
3. Using CC tethered to a Wiimote.

Do you still buy it? And if so, what control method do you use?

BTW, I'm sad they got rid of the octagon-shaped controller stick wells. I was playing Brawl on my buddy's computer with Dolphin and a 360 controller, and those octagons really help for Smash. I think maybe an octagon with curved sides would have been best.

Can someone tell me the back story of the E3 bear? lol

Very roughly, pictures leaked a couple of days before E3 about the boxes which contained materials for showfloors, booths, press conferences, etc.

One of the pictures contained a piece of a metal rod (part of a structure) with old, chipped paint. One of the members quickly sketched a mock-up of the E3 bear. And so it began. Someone have the actual post? I know I saw it earlier this week.

During a desperate hour for GAF, we were frantically scrutinizing the crates containing supplies for the booths at E3. It was then we were brought a sign, a sign from the almighty power that resides over this, the most sacred time of the year.

now i wanna reread the e3 topic again. the e3 bear creation was amazing.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
next week iirc

About it, maybe here someone will answer

Just to know...when is Nintendo Power normally released?
I mean, is it always released in a specific day of the month ( for example: first monday of the month), or does it vary?

I'd like to know, in order to understand when the preview should go up on the official Nintendo Power site.

200+ playable kiosk at the Sony Booth my ass. Or somehow the scale of the map is really messed up.

maybe sony's just filling up their booth with multiple kiosks of third party games instead of having those stages/areas exclusive to first party games.

I'll be blogging it (via the feed) for my website, grabbing images from our representative attending. I don't usually have meltdowns, one way or the other, but I'll share my thoughts once it's over.

Pretty much. A lot of are multi-platform, but I wanted to stick with Uncharted over Halo and Gears of War.

I don't own a 360, so I miss out on anything exclusive to that platform. The rest I get I get on PC. I also have Binary Domain on PS3, but the PC version got announced right after I bought it. I'd own a 360, but my PS3 struggles to get enough love as it is.

I think I have maybe 46 or so Wii games. I've got 40-something here, and a few with my sister.

They had heaps last year. Their conference doubles as a massive hands-on event too.

Funny you'd say that...

why?

I think I have maybe 46 or so Wii games. I've got 40-something here, and a few with my sister.

to be fair, a good many of them were either free or cost me less than $30. probably about 15-20 of the games i got for it, i got cheap. the impulse thing was really what set apart the wii from the other consoles. the same is true of my ps2. a lot of times the deals would be exclusive to that system. i got beyond good & evil new for $7.99 in 2003 because of it.

Wii U Aliens: Colonial Marines is best-looking version because of console's "more modern tech"

Hot on the heels of Vigil revealing that the Wii U version of Darksiders 2 will look "at least as good as" the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions,
Gearbox Software has gone one step further, and insisted the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines will be the best-looking version.

Echoing Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford's comments made earlier this month, senior producer Brian Burleson described the Wii U is a "powerful, powerful machine".

Publishers and developers working with Wii U are under orders from Nintendo not to divulge information on the console, with technical specifications a closely guarded secret.
Previous reports have suggested Nintendo's first HD console is "not as capable" as the PS3 and Xbox 360. And Nintendo has issued a statement admitting its focus is on gameplay, not graphics. Eurogamer has been told by developers who wish to remain anonymous that Wii U ports of multiplatform games will look as good as PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, but games built from the ground up for the console will show its true potential.
While Burleson is under the same orders not to discuss the Wii U in detail, he insisted Gearbox has managed to get Aliens: Colonial Marines singing on the machine.

"[Creating the Wii U version] has been pretty easy," he told Eurogamer. "The Wii U is a powerful, powerful machine and it can do a lot of cool new things. And so the game itself, moving it over to work on the Wii U was not much of a chore.
"Now the interesting thing is finding out all the cool ways you can use the controller to do new stuff with it. You can imagine all the cool things we can do, with this franchise and having a thing with you, right?"

Gearbox plans to have Aliens' famous motion tracker displayed on the Wii U controller's touch screen controller, alerting players to the presence of those nasty aliens. There are other applications, too, although publisher Sega intervened in our discussion of them to prevent details from being divulged.
"You can imagine some cool features, for sure," Burleson said. "It's not hard to imagine some cool features."
The Wii U's power, though, is "one thing I can't talk about", he said. "Actually nailing the specs, they haven't come out with them yet."

But, the Wii U version of Aliens will "be better" than the PS3 and Xbox 360 version in terms of visuals, he confirmed. Why? Because of "more modern tech".
What Burleson is alluding to here is the suggestion that because the Wii U contains modern components, it will by default be more powerful than the ageing PS3 and Xbox 360.

How, exactly, will it be better? "You'll have to wait and see," Burleson teased. "Just trust me on that one."
Now, all eyes are on the E3 trade show next month, where Nintendo will unveil the final Wii U design, and third-parties will announce their Wii U games and plans.

Here's a really crappy rendition of how I think the control stick wells should be shaped:

Obviously, straightened up, and evened out, but you get the picture. I think this would be most excellent, and I'll be disappointed if Nintendo really ditches the octagon completely.

I want them to ditch the octagon completely. It's an analog stick, so limiting in some form to go in only 8 direction would be stupid.

No.

The 'max' that the analogue sticks can go is within the octagon, as in, there is a space of just dead-zone between the max and the edge of the octagon. The gates help to ensure that you are going perfectly straight in the direction you want.

Not only that, but they also help orient your thumbs. For example, if I'm using Fox's Up-B special, and I need to go almost straight up but not quite, I push up into the top gate, then edge the stick ever-so-slightly to the left. This allows for precise controls in more than just the cardinal directions. But I think the slightly rounded sides would help the stick leave the cardinal direction gates a little bit easier than in the GC/Wii controllers.

EDIT: Cardinal & intercardinal directions, that is.
