The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

Not really, but I believe only the French studios use LyN (Montpellier and Paris) for some reason. And no, didn't see your post. Link?

He didn't. What did you say already? :)

Here you go.

This might only interest some, but a recent discussion elsewhere about Wii re-piqued my interest in a possible direction of the new GPU. Since Wii's TEV supposed had normal mapping added, I wonder if one of the things Nintendo did (other than lighting) was come up with a way to make the GPU more efficient in handling displacement maps, tessellation, and the relationship between the two. This would be a way I can see the "ground up" games achieving much better visuals than a game that is just a port.

For those wondering what I am talking about, here are a couple of rough examples.

So close that's frightening, but future perfect is a neat game, how I didn't buy it earlier...

And I have a question. mtv2 broadcast the conference if I understand and for now I have free access to cable channels but I don't find it, I remember it was an alternative music channel, now I have something called mtv rocks. Is that the new name or completely different thing?

Maybe I missed it, but what's the reasoning behind moving this thread to Community? Is it too stressful on the servers or something? I'm being serious.

Because I don't understand the rationale for doing it. From a marketing and advertising standpoint, it makes zero sense. You took the largest, fastest moving thread on the forum and completely neutered it. All the lurker traffic that this thread gave you with possible ad click revenue and such has been potentially crippled because someone may assume that the thread was locked.

How many times did these threads speculation, rumors, and insider knowledge get taken from here and posted on other sites? I'm pretty sure that a couple of those times, GAF was credited as the source. Isn't the whole idea of this site to drive more traffic? This just seems counterproductive to what the sites goals are.

But if its a technical reason I can understand that.

why is Nintendo not dropping 3DS bombs right now?

I can understand WiiU but why not hype up 3DS for a little while before the big show when WiiU takes over the focus anyway?

What makes you think Nintendo will drop any bombs before E3? It's not like they've dropped anything yet on the WiiU.. all the info and insider intel has come through the dev-kits.
.. 3DS Megatons are the last thing we'll expect with the WiiU taking center-stage.. so when it does happen I predict it will be delicious.

Darksiders 2 will look "at least as good as" the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions,

Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines will be the best-looking version.

Now class, which statement will probably garner more enthusiastic sales?

Whoever is behind the marketing of Darksiders2, should have just told everyone to
keep their mouths shut regarding the WiiU version. Like most developers. This way, even if the WiiU version was no different than the PS360 version visually, fanboy's would assume it is.

Perception is so important.

You seem to think threads exist simply to make NeoGAF money. This is not true.

This thread was moved to community as part of an ever growing push to make both community sub-forums more active and useful. Previously, community had no real point. Now it does.

What it the role of community? Community exists to house and organise threads that operate like communities. That is to say they are not threads based on a very specific topic, with continuous, relevant discussion and debates. They are usually vague threads that operate without strict topical rules: posters often go off topic, discuss a very wide range of topics, and generally there is greater flexibility to the kinds of discussion and content posted.

In addition to this, these threads tend to nurture groups of regular posters who do not post in the thread just because of the thread's topic, but to communicate with one another, and engage in communal activity and discussion.

This is why, for some time now, we've made a policy of shift all official game topics to community around one month after the game has been out. By this point discussion in the thread is pretty varied and covers a wide variety of topics, eg: impressions of the game, the developer, comments on performance, questions, concerns, where to buy, best prices, online modes, and so on. Any major news, such as DLC packs, surprises or revelations, are not to contained in these threads. Not everybody visits game OTs regularly, even if they love the game, so this kind of news ends up quickly burried. Thus we ask that new news gets a new thread. And if new news is getting new threads, OTs continue to function like communities.

This is the sixth Wii U speculation thread since June 2011. This series has been running almost a year. News gets posted, but the fact of the matter is these threads are practically definitively a community thread. They operate exactly like a community thread is expected to, and every poster here encourages that.

Thus the series no longer belongs in the gaming forum, continually sitting on the front page why regulars make a hundred posts a day on what the weather is like. That discussion is fine, but the series just doesn't belong in that forum. It is a community thread, and it has now been appropriately categorised.

Frankly it should have been done at the very latest in the last thread.

EDIT: WHAT ^^^^^HE^^^^^ SAID :p

Maybe I missed it, but what's the reasoning behind moving this thread to Community? Is it too stressful on the servers or something?
The site's policy, especially around E3, is to not have huge super threads. They don't want people to have to search through hundreds of pages to get the info. They want each thread to have a clear, easy to understand point, which these threads do not. They also don't want system wars breaking out, which are encouraged by having these huge threads largely inhabited by one faction. The Community forums are in part for this, a community of people in a thread.

At least, that's my understanding of it.

I was still a bit confused about why the thread was moved to community, but EatChildren basically just cleared up any questions I had with that post. Good stuff.

Here you go.

What do you think to the 6770 rumors bg ?, now that would be a beast of a console with 2GB's of Ram and a decent CPU.

Not much has been said about the CPU, will it just be a faster 360 like tri core CPU i take it ?.

Getting really excited now it's getting closer !.

We have a lot to look forward to before next Tue aswell.

The fourth Game Trailers preview is on Sun (third parties) then the pre E3 Game Trailers show with exclusive content ect is a week today, then we have a weekend of possible leaks and then Sony / MS on Mon :).

Altho i have been looking forward to this 'rereveal' all year I have only been posting here for a couple of months and the weeks have dragged so i can only imagine what you guys are feeling that have been posting / waiting since last E3 !.

Well done for sticking in there and i hope Wii U is everything you hope it is and more.

Does anyone here think one reason Nintendo chose this particular tech compared to others is due to how the Wii situation turned out with third parties? The Wiimote was such a great controller and definitely had games that proved it's worth, but most third party games had really bad implementation of the tech. You had to think about how you developed things on it more so than usual since things weren't so traditional. With the Umote, there is an immediate reaction people have when they see the screen AND it's pretty much effortless to do it. You can certainly come up with more innovative uses outside of the usual map, inventory, etc...but the games won't suffer if third parties don't want to.

I know nintendo does their own thing, but seeing how they have been attempting to court third parties, was this a real factor in why we got this type of input as opposed to some other innovation?

Yes, I believe this. I believe difficulties, whining and disinterest from third parties and 'core gamers' strongly influenced Nintendo's choice on the Wii U's main controller. Specifically, dual analogue. It's what people know, people love, and fact of the matter is it makes ports much, much easier. It's one thing to take a game from one system to the Wii U, have it control more or less exactly the same, and expand the concept with the touch screen, but it's another thing entirely to re-work the entire damn game to use the Wii Remote's limited button configuration, pointer and gyroscope.

I just hope plenty of console only shooters still make use of the pointer. Backwards compatibility is good, but I want to see the Wii remote as more than an alternative and option to multiplayer games. I want to see it still used as a core controller for some titles.

No, I think Nintendo was just thinking about the fact that the Nintendo DS family was a huge, surprising breakaway hit, and phones and tablets and touchscreen gaming is becoming really popular, so they decided to make a "Wii DS".

That's only a partial explanation, though. I mean, it would've been perfectly possible to create a new remote/nunchuk that contained all the standard controls, so the decision to focus on the screen rather than dual motion/pointer is separate.

I'll be blogging it (via the feed) for my website, grabbing images from our representative attending. I don't usually have meltdowns, one way or the other, but I'll share my thoughts once it's over.

Pretty much. A lot of are multi-platform, but I wanted to stick with Uncharted over Halo and Gears of War.

I don't own a 360, so I miss out on anything exclusive to that platform. The rest I get I get on PC. I also have Binary Domain on PS3, but the PC version got announced right after I bought it. I'd own a 360, but my PS3 struggles to get enough love as it is.

I think I have maybe 46 or so Wii games. I've got 40-something here, and a few with my sister.

They had heaps last year. Their conference doubles as a massive hands-on event too.
That's why I'm excited to read. You're always making sensible posts.may I have a link to your blog?

Yes I think it has more to do with tablets getting popular. That, and maybe they realised motion gaming was a dead-end, I mean even Nintendo didn't come up with a lot of new gameplay mechanics for it in 6 years.

Most people at NCL. Sakurai actually looks younger.

Is it Sakurai on the left? lol yeah he looks younger now. What devilry is this!? Is this what happens when you actually love what you're doing?
BTW, it looks like each one drew their own Kirby no? Iwata drawing skills :)

Well if it has a general purpose ARM CPU as mentioned a few times it opens the doors up for some multitasking, like play a game on one screen, run a web browser or Netflix or whatever on the other. There's a lot of possibilities...but I'm keeping my hopes in check cause I have limited faith in Nintendo when it comes to stuff like this.

See, I wouldn't be too optimistic myself, honestly, but we received this comment from this dude:

I wouldn't worry about the functionality of Wii U's OS or front-end. It'll be more full-featured then most people imagine.

So I expect to see some neat stuff. *crosses fingers for the capability of OS-level screenshots*

Also, this Matt dude is a Google employee, right? I take it that Google might be involved on a software level with the Wii U, then (unless it's already been confirmed, and I missed it)? Would make sense given Nintendo's comment about partnering with "previously unconsidered third parties".

...What manner of witchcraft is this?! Is Sakurai actually regressing in age?!

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage

A Google/Nintendo partnership would be interesting to say the least. It would show that Nintendo actually went to a specialist to fix their certain issues.

this is very true because I would rather skip vigil's game at this point since they don't seem to care about it much to hype it up

Sometimes I wonder if people glossed over gossip due to how fast the thread moved in Gaming. Now, a little slower, perhaps people will be more attentive.

I write for the aussie website Rocket Chainsaw. We're kinda small for now, but long story short is that we moved from somewhere bigger and decided to make this instead.

Head honcho Adam is attending E3 this year. I was going to, but finances + other shit has stopped me. We finally got booked in for Microsoft too, thank you kindly if you're reading.

Nice, I'm much more inclined to read a blog on the event than any huge publication website like ign. I'll be happy to give you guys a hit.

After tossing and turning with concepts of what kind of 'new IP' Retro could be working on, it dawned on me recently that I'd probably cream my pants most at Metroid Prime 4. I'm deeply ashamed of this sequelphilia, but I can't help it.
