the wire or game of thrones?

Just didn't seem in character to me for them to do that. I was ok with the newspaper stuff. The other stuff made me raaaaaaage.

I think
Lester doing it was a tad out of character, for sure. But Jimmy? Self destructive, drunk again, always fucking with the bosses but ultimately wants work to be done Jimmy? Yeah. No problem with it whatsoever. It's not like it went on for series and series, and Bunk/Kima were against it

Yea it definitely fit Jimmy's personality.

well yeah definitely Lester agreeing is what made it so bad to me. If it was just McNulty being McNulty, I wouldn't have such a problem.

This thread is making me rage, because A Song of Ice and Fire is just as good, if not better, than The Wire as a work of fiction. But then I have to remember that he's talking about the tv series, along with all the stupid changes the showrunners made.

Like that comment about how The Wire has better characters by a mile... fuck that shit. Arya alone is better than anyone in The Wire's cast except maybe Stringer or Bubbles... but her story is pretty much ruined in the tv series.

So this thread makes me rage because it seems like you all are shitting on one of the best fictional series ever, and then it makes me rage again because I have to remember what those two hacks Weiss and Benioff did to it.

you need to calm down. it's just a tv show. the most popular one ever for HBO, but just a show.

besides, you wouldn't be able to remotely do it better than Dan and Dave. hahaha

There's no way that ASOIAF is a good as The Wire. There is nothing in The Wire that comes close to the being as bad as the fucking atrocity that is ADWD. As far as I'm concerned Martin has totally lost it and I have serious doubts about the rest of ASOIAF.

I have not yet read ADWD, no way can it be as bad as season 5 of the wire, can it?

Jack Remington, my faith is weakening, I need strength!

Season 2 is amazing for me largely because of what a great character Frank Sobotka is.

Yup!
Frank Sobatka could easily carry a Coen Brothers film.

Ever seen that actor on True Blood?
What the fuck happened to homeboy?
I saw that shit at my in-laws a few years back and was shaking my head till my neck hurt.

Neither. Breaking Bad. I may be in a minority here, but I never felt HBO shows were a golden calf or anything.

Why are you assuming the OP hasn't seen Breaking BAd? This thread isn' about best shows of all time...

A Dance with Dragons SPOILERS well not really spoilers but general impressions of the book,
It can. There is some great material in there, but there's a lot of shit as well.

Surprised nobody's brought up Mad Men or Deadwood yet.

edit:

everybody should watch sopranos, the wire, mad men, deadwood and the shield. after that let the suggestions begin.

game of thrones is...aiight i guess. there's multiple programs i'm enjoying more but it's not a long boring slog like walking dead at least.

Well it's a different type of bad. DwD is Martin getting lost in his own universe and forgetting that he has a story to tell.

honestly at this point if somebody says "should I watch...?" they should look at this list first:

The Sopranos
The Wire
Deadwood
Mad Men
The Shield

and then if those are all taken care of then jump to whatever suggestions. and i'm not some snob that hates fantasy. LOTR 1 is like a top 10 movie for me. but game of thrones feels like squandered potential and boredom half of the time. I only ever enjoy a percentage of the episodes rather than the whole thing (aside from blackwater)

The Sheild always feels so self-concious and GRITTY!!!! when I try to jump in. Does that change?
I know it can't get worse than the ending of the first ep, but I imagine it gets legit in a serious way with all the praise right? I don't doubt the praise, but man... I just can't get in. It feels like an uglier Breaking Bad with more spelled out character motivations.

The Shield is like those cheesy 90's USA Network shows. Silk Stockings comes to mind, or Pacific Blue. Yeah, it's mediocre

It's okay, OP did the right thing by choosing the better show, GoT.

This man right here truly enjoys arguing with other people on the internet! Can someone, anyone oblige him!?

In the meantime, I just wanna talk TV...

Well if we are getting into great shows then "I Claudius" needs to be in there.
Werd! We talking BBC mini-series right?

i guess breaking bad was a neater version of the formula. you could probably substitute the shield with it.

they both pretty much have deplorable protagonists though. the shield gets much better than it's beginning though. when did you quit?

I won't oblige him or get into an argument, but the premise that Shield is on the level of Pacific Blue or Silk Stockings is absurd.

The Shield is a bit weak in the first season, but it develops into a masterpiece.

Season 5 of The Wire retroactively ruined the rest of the series. The McNulty bullshit with the fake
serial killer
ruined the entire damn series. I gave up on it after that. It was that bad.

This from a person that stuck with Weeds, Entourage, and House through the end, and is still watching Dexter.

So, Season 5 jumped the shark but
Hamsterdam
didn't?

Give me a fucking break.

You are awesome.

And so is GoT. Crunching all those pages down into ten episodes is tough.

But the most important thing going on in this thread apart from zero_suit being awesome is that balddemon is so pleased with himself.

Not according to all of the "writers" in the TV threads...

Pretty early. I wasn't grabbed by Episode 4 or 5 I think. That said, I'm willing to go back in someday. I sat through the first seaon and a half of Buffy (despite my better judgement) and ended up really loving it by the end, so anything is possible.

I can't get my head around the fact that people think that GoT is the better show.
One is an intelligent crime drama and the other one is rather dumb fantasy entertainment.

Both are entertaining on their own merits, but the Wire as a show shits all over Game of Thrones.

Like all of 2 people in this whole thread has said GoT is better than the Wire. It's actually a thread mostly of people crapping on GoT relative to the Wire.

Now I remember why I gave the Wire a shot (people here are crazy about it!). I hated the first two episodes, though, and I do not usually give shows or video games second shots. Realistic crime dramas do not interest me in the least bit. I tend to stay away from dramatic TV shows grounded in realism I've realized, and I only enjoy realism in movie form. Something like a TV show has to hook me from the get go really because they really are a time commitment...so comedies, fantasy, or something supernatural related usually get me.

Give it another shot. The Shield is definitely a grower. The first season has some misses as they apparently didn't know what they were going to do with it yet (the 6th episode in particular is pretty bad). But it develops into some of the best TV ever.

edit: It's probably around the 8th episode where the Shield really starts to develop.

Probably gonna get trolled but IMO "The Game of Thrones" is 1000x better than "The Wire". One single episode of "GoT" has more plot development that a whole season of "The Wire" combined. I guess "The Wire" was realistic, but that was about the only thing that series had going for it. How anyone could consider S5 with that fake serial killer to be "must watch TV" just baffles me.

pretty much

100% correct. Game of Thrones is amazing. The Wire is average at best.
