Did anyone else get stuck on the "Family Matters" main quest?

After initially investigating all the rooms and finding the prayer room, it told me to go back up to the bedroom and look for clues. Thing is, I did everything in that room already and tried doing it again with nothing changing. Spoke to the Barron and he explained the wine, but then the quest doesn't progress. In between, I helped the little girl from Ciri's flash back find the spinning top, did doing that effectively break the quest?

Do I have to do other quests in order to move this one forward? I was getting incredibly frustrated last night

Need an answer on this. Please, I don't want to continue if I have to come back to an old save

Is it normal to not have a crossbow yet...? level 3,ready to bait the griffon in the tutorial region, and doing all the sidequests and exploration question marks...could of swore I saw some trailers and lets play where they had a crossbow for the Griffon fight...

Vessemir gives you it right before you fight.

Vesemir gives you a crossbow when you're about to bait the Griffon

Oh my ... it's been awhile since I played something that doesn't autosave with regularity. Need to get myself back in the habit of saving. It's just not something I think of, especially on console.

The feeling of "I just lost hours of work" is really taking me back to my PC gaming days. :)

That said, replaying a few hours of this is not the worst thing in the world.

Can we nominate Velen as one of the most depressing places ever in gaming? I love it, but damn its a horrid place to live. Its made up of scary forest, rotting battle grounds, hanging bodies, and nasty bogs. Also, If your family members weren't killed in the war, then they are dead from so horrendous monster attack.

Grabbed that DLC gear at level 4, it's much better than what I had. Didn't have enough for the chest though so saving for that next.

You just have to get better! I can dodge and parry everything with ease. Could be because of all the years of Souls games and Bloodborne recently but it is definitly working like a charm.

All this complaints about the PS4 version are strange... I had a little fps problems at the beginning, but everything is fine now. Loading times after a death a horrible that is true, but everything else is fine so far. How can it be that so many people have problems with their games? Digital version? I have the retail version and version 1.01 and only had the Gwent crashes back then. I am also 28 hours into the game now. D:

how are you 28 hours in? It's only been out for like 34. do you not have a job or sleep? lol

is there a way to switch targets "z" without hitting z to detarget and then looking towards a closer enemy and retargeting?

Yeah, it's called ditching KB/M for combat and using a game pad. Sorry, I know that doesn't answer your question, but I'm normally a KB/M guy (PC gamer since the 90's), but combat in this game is shit with a keyboard. With a game pad, you just flick with right-stick in the direction of the enemy you wish to target, like Souls/Bloodborne. I don't know how to change targets with KB/M other than mashing Z. For everything else in the game, like looting, traveling, and conversations, the keyboard is probably superior. I just keep my Xbox controller on my lap for when it's time to fight.

Spot on here, i think this game have some serious issue to be consider "one of the best RPG ever". Also the UI when we have a lot of items is atrocious

The things they listed are tiny flaws and/or bugs, quickly fixed. I'm even gonna doubt the credibility of the third last one, I've had zero problems dodging and parrying. None of these things should ever take the game out of anyone's "potential best RPG ever/in a long time" list.

Unless you meant that in general, in which case, fair enough, it's your opinion.

I
killed it because fuck am I taking orders from a tree.

After
I decided to help it and gathered some ritual materials for it, the game again allows me to trick and kill it or keep on helping it. I can't handle these decisions anymore.

Agreed. I use keyboard and mouse but lately, since games nowadays tend to be console ports, gamepad is better.

Just completed my first contract.

I love this game. It's everything I've ever wanted from a fantasy game.

I'm only a couple hours in, but I cannot wait to see more.

I'm almost done with The Last Wish...and it's cleared up so much of plot for me (e.g. Ciri's tie to Emhyr and Geralt). This game, in particular, seems built around the books.

Also, a question about a side task in White Orchard:

I have one last marker that isn't completed. An abandoned town in the southern part of the map, near where the power marker and bear are. I killed the bear, but the townspeople still haven't moved in... I don't see any other ghouls or bandits around. What gives?

GAF, I downloaded the beard DLC from GOG before realizing that doing so disables the game's number one feature: Realtime beard growth

Now that I know about this awful side effect, I'm VERY WORRIED that Geralt's beard will never grow again. Could someone confirm that disabling the beard/hair DLC will allow Geralt's beautiful beard to grow once more?

This is very important.

Been a harsh slap after years of autosave coddling, even on most pc games. It's a shame there is no quicksave on the console. They don't split the touchscreen button press into left and right, I'd love to see pressing the right side bring up the menu like it curently does, press the left for a quicksave.

Also, discovering that swiping on the touchscreen opened the map directly was a revelation. If only it had a similar way to close it directly, rather than having to back out twice.

Anyone else trying to play without the minimap? I find that when I have it enabled, I spend so much time looking at it that I miss visual detail in the world. I just wish there were a way to "ping" the objective and get a brief directional notification without having to open the world map.

Read 'em all!

Not necessarily because they clear up more (they do that), but also because they're all awesome.

all those beehives on the trees, burn them down and sell them to the alchemist women in white orchid near sawmill :D quite a few around there

Read the note on the tree near the first quest board ;)

Edit: awww didn't want to spell it out for him...

Awesome thanks - I think I actually read the note, but I laughably can't remember what it said, I know it was something along the lines of the herbalist/alchemist wanting something.

Loading times after dying are unforgiveable on PS4, as well as random loading for seconds-long cutscenes, loading through fast-travel, etc. So bad that I would rather quit the game than sit through them.

Really? I shudder to think of what you think of gta v or any Bethesda RPG then because the loading times seem really quick to me. Nevermind being unforgivable. You must want instant gratification if you think it's that bad (and I'm on ps4 too).

Musings:
- loot system needs to be improved, wandering around a corpse to find the specific area to get the "Loot X" prompt to appear is not fun
- same with mounting Roach, walking around him in circles pressing/holding X is frustrating

Fully agreed here.

- NPCs saying "follow me/I'll lead the way" and then just loitering around is terrible, I may as well just run ahead because they're so slow, and then they speed up

That is on purpose and good design. The NPCs will walk at the pace you want to go so no having to try not to pass them. You want to walk slow? They'll walk slow. You don't want to go yet, they'll wait. You want to walk quickly, they'll walk quickly. Just walk the pace you want to go and you will find the problem is you misread what is happening here.

- checkpoint/auto-save during missions is awful; dying, sitting through a 30 second loading screen to find you're miles behind is an instant mood killer

Do what us old time rpg players do, quit relying on autosave ;). I don't like relying on it anyways cause I want to determine where I go back to if I fail.

- parrying/dodging sometimes simply doesn't work

It's a very monster hunter like combat. You have to time it perfectly and if you mistime an attack too soon to when the monster attacks you will miss out on your opportunity to dodge. So don't just try attacking again if you timed an attack wrong and it was too early. Take your time with combat, focus on dodging and only hitting at the right time. It's not a combat system geared for people who just want to kill quickly. You need patience and tactics

So far its much more built around Last wish and SoD, but alot of triss stuff will be lost on you if you havent played witcher 2 and also understand how important yen is to geralt

This has probably already been shared but...

For those of you playing on Xbox One - don't shut down your system with the instant on function enabled while you have the game still running. Doing so will cause your game to fail to save the next time you go to play - losing all of your forward progress. Also the Xbox will have to be hard reset for the game to load any previous saves. Luckily I noticed this after 15 minutes, but some people have lost hours of progress.

I'm currently testing leaving the instant on enabled, but dashboarding and quitting the game before shutting the Xbox off. Hopefully that's a viable workaround until a patch fixes it.

The lock-on in this game is terrible. It keeps getting stuck on enemies far away from me when there's one right in my face and I can almost never get it to switch or the right enemy.
