Combat is some of the worst mechanics in a third person game that I have played. Geralt is light as a feather, slippery (keeps moving after you let go of stick) and attacks lack impact/punch to them. Disappointing after all the progress thats been made in combat in past 7 years. Game is simply spam bomb/sign/block and then hit while enemy is stunned. and lots of dodging. Easily the worst part of the game.

Funny how the combat seem to be love it or hate it so far.

I'm enjoying it a lot, and I wasn't a big fan of the combat in Witcher 2 (it was only ok). I think the dodge move has a lot to do with it. I barely use roll in this game, unless there's an attack with large AOE (which happens sometimes). I feel like Muhammed Ali dodging monsters and humans around while I keep the jabs coming. Combined with the signs, it can be a lot of fun.

There's a certain rhythm to the combat, and when you "get it", it's really enjoyable. At least in my experience.

I've dialed down difficulty to 2nd lowest and then to lowest on some of the bosses. Combat just seems way messier than it should be and quite frankly, I don't have the patience to deal with it. But, it does mean I get to enjoy the story more since I'm not struggling with controls and it's been completely amazing. The set pieces and lore are fantastic.

It definitely has some of the feel of Skyrim, especially after getting to the Isles, but, it's scope is way, way more intimidating. My main map just has so many question marks and the size of those maps collectively is breathtaking. I can feel, like Skyrim, I'll get engrossed in this for 150 hours, love it madly, and then feel physical repulsion if I try to load it again some day, so, I'm enjoying these hours while I can.

Some of my favorite bits through traveling to the Isles as level 12 and staying very close to story instead of side quests. Also keep in mind I was completely radio dark about this game until release day, didn't even see a demo. Reviews got me.

The ladies in the wood. Read up on baba yaga. Played this at like 2am and had nightmares that night.
The demon floating baby just because wtf
The bit where the girl joins the dead king on the boat. I had to look up whether that was part of the ritual cause that just didn't seem fair. :(
The witcher/sorceress song in the inn.
Chasing Yen with the mask, the forest at that part with all the storms and mask energy was an amazing bit of tense scene setting. Mystical powers just seem unleashed in this game.
Of course, the unicorn.

I finished the game the day before yesterday, and put in over 125 hours, and still never had a Greater red.

Damn. I got 2 lessers from Nekkers. One was in Novigrad and the other in Skellige. Surely some beast must drop a standard. It's a shame cant you break the monster ones down to lesser.

I don't see how anyone can honestly "love" it. They are just to many things fundamentally broken about the game to step back and say yeah I love this jank! I can understand people not being bothered by it but thats about it.

I think though Skyrim is no major contender for combat that its better than W3. In Skyrim when you start getting powerful the game does a great job providing that feedback, plus few things are as great as sniping someone with an arrow in Skyrim and seeing them fly like they were hit with a Ballista.

The Witcher is different in that its badly executed. Your movement is slow and has this weird floaty feeling. There is a constant disconnect between Geralt and the environment he is in.

Input lag is a very real thing as well and at least on consoles can be really frustrating when your used to having a responsive character especially coming from something like Bloodborne.

Humans are the only thing in the game that feel satisfying to fight because they are encumbered by all the same issues you experience as a player. They are slow and allow you the time to plan your attacks. Its when the game introduces monsters with large AOF attacks and swarming patterns that it just gets exhausting because your reduced to just dodging haphazardly out of the way until a small opening happens using your magic to push threats away and swinging hoping you can get the hell out after you connect before the endless swarms hit you again.

I can't compare it to anything cause I have never played something badly executed.
Maybe a really slow Assassins Creed that used remote play as your primary input.

Even though the combat is bad the story is so excellent that I find myself completely consumed with it. I love all the side quests and the inventiveness in the world and lore. Its sublime. Its just a shame actually playing it is such a far cry from the polish seen elsewhere.

Assassin's Creed? C'mon man, that really doesn't paint a fair picture. It has absolutely nothing in common with Assassin's Creed.

Jeeeez, you don't like it, we know it, you said it 10000 times already. But that's just your opinion, can you stop shoveling it up everybody's ass?
I like the combat very much.

Hyperbole much? What exactly is "broken" about the combat? I get from your post that you just don't like the feel of it, but nothing you described sounds as broken.

To each their own, I guess. I also can't see how anyone would find Skyrim's combat enjoyable in any way.

Exactly what I was thinking - but instead of Velen it was White Orchard.

Not bothered by the "bad" that people say is in there (besides swimming). Love the rest.

Some of the timing reminds me of Creed but your right its unique. I really can't think of any other game truly similar.

It's not broken, but it's not really lovable (IMO) either, it works, but it's rough, and lacks polish, you rarely feel the hits connect, you sometimes hit an enemy without actually hitting them, the animations mean that you sometimes slide about, and the camera is unwieldly.

It's not broken, just could do with some polish.

So that Gwent tournament quest called High Stakes, is says the suggested level is 26 but is there any combat? Or is that just to make players spend time finding better cards?

Is it possible to repair weapons/armor in the field and if so how?

blacksmith / armorsmiths sell repair tools that repair your weapon's / armor's durability.

You should have some in your inventory already, really. They're in the first inventory tab, alongside weapons, armor and runes.

So that Gwent tournament quest called High Stakes, is says the suggested level is 26 but is there any combat? Or is that just to make players spend time finding better cards?

the quest isn't just a gwent tournament but also some goings-on during said tournament, namely
the prize money having been stolen
, which i assume might involve some (level 26) combat later-on.

But you're free to do the tournament part of it and just leave afterwards, coming back to the further parts at the appropriate level (which is what i did).

Also, be aware that you need to win(!) this tournament for the trophy / achievement that wants you to collect all the game's gwent cards. So save beforehand.

I've read the books,
and maybe I've missed something but I kind have the same question. I'm not sure what he hoped to get out of it. If he knew he'd get their child I have no idea what he thought he'd to with it. I kinda suspect it was just "destiny" acting through him.

Only read The Last Wish and Blood of Elves but I think Law of Surprise is one of the recruiting tools that Witchers use to find new recruits. It isn't always a child but it seems to be more common than expected. Though the book makes pains to note that they aren't' experienced in training girls so I'm not sure what happened previously when a Surprise Child was a girl and not a boy.

It's more to it than just the tournament itself. Albeit I bailed early when I lost. But I can tel you there is certainly more going on.

More and more is clear to me a small defect within the game: there is nothing to do with the money. The best weapons and armor are crafted, second best are the ones you find in treasure chests or at the end of quest, and very very rarely the traders has anything good to buy. I have more than 6K already, and barely started Novigrad.

Any game that waits for an animation cycle to be completed before allowing you to begin another movement is bad.
The only game I can remember that was like that was Uncharted 3's melee and I remember people defending that game too. At least with Uncharted it was because ND really wanted to show off how fancy their animation blending was. Still was to the detriment of the game.

Your movement as Geralt in the world is broken. Its not player specific its just the way the game is. Some people are fine with it and can look past it I mean I certainly looked past a lot of jankines with Skyrim and it didn't even have close to as good of world building as Witcher does but that doesn't mean I can't acknowledge how subpar the gameplay is.

Anyhow im beating a dead horse. I do love the game just not any of the parts that have to do with playing it. Thats the last Ill bring it up because I am sure its getting tiring for everyone.

By the way, I haven't even mentioned this yet but I have to commend CDPR on their content, even from a physical perspective.

For a mere 48EUR I got myself one of the largest and most expansive WRPG's ever made, and even the PS4 box was filled with goodies.

A well-designed cardboard sleeve for the box, a big colour map with insane details, a compendium to read up on the back story of the universe, badass wolf stickers, a personal note from CDPR, 16 free pieces of DLC, a manual and a physical copy of the game's OST.

They went all out to deliver on this game and it shows. I've never had so much content out of the box, most modern games barely add a sliver of paper in the manual section with a link to the website.

Bravo.

It's surprising how anyone can think it's slower than AC, to be honest. You can zip through the battlefield in Witcher 3 with the dodge button. You can go from enemy to enemy effortlessly while in AC you are practically stuck to the same place waiting enemies to attack so you can counter.
