The active shield fully upgraded is like cheating. :)

Thanks for all the tips people. Wow! I'm early on so plenty of time to improve.
I haven't been using much more than igni so that's my bad.
Best way to get bombs? 12 hours in and only threw them in the tutorial. Again my bad.

Bombs are produced through alchemy formulas you'll find in chests or at herb vendors and alchemists. You produce them through the alchemy menu and they refill with alcohol when you meditate, just like your potions.

To get to that bit she'd have to play the game first.

they also seemed compelled to throw themselves upon his sword for some reason
knowing they dont stand a chance in hell of beating a Witcher
Any joke starting with "A witcher walks into a bar" ends with bloodshed and immediately spreading news of said violence, fear and ignorance filling the minds of the populace.

Isn't Geralt's mutation supposed to make him emotionless? If that's the case, why does he has affections for Yen, Ciri, Triss, etc? Shouldn't he be completely indifferent to everyone?
People say witchers don't have emotions byt they actually just don't show them often

This game is so goooooooood. I'm just gonna say that in nearly every game I've played, no matter how good, I've never really bothered with doing any of the extras such as side missions and whatnot. It's always been the main story and done, but this game is something else. Not only am I interested in, and actually completing, the side missions I'm also finding myself just wandering around aimlessly at times just admiring how gorgeous everything looks. It's up there as one of the best games I've ever played.

She should probably never read the books.

The saga is basically the story of Ciri being sexually assaulted and narrowly escaping sexual assault around every corner while every villain wants to impregnate her.

youd think no one would dare touch
Emyrs daughter
for fear of having their head cut off
by either him or Geralt

Well, when
Emyr also wants to impregnate her, too for most of the books...

Also a lot of the people wanting to do that in the books are way more powerful than Geralt alone is.

Just ended up doing a random sidequest there on Skellige and really enjoyed the way things turned out. I could see someone missing it or just not bothering to complete if they didn't want to.

So I go to an inn and after entering the place these wankers start giving me shit about being a 'Continental'. A local warrior basically says to them 'shut the fuck up, don't you know how to treat travellers?' and sends them on their way. He then says I'm free to chat with him if I want and he goes and sits down. I buy some stuff from the innkeeper and go over to the warrior and sit down.

He asks me to do a contract of taking out a ghost at a nearby lighthouse. So I do so and go back to the inn and he says thanks etc. Again the two wankers show up and start spouting but the warrior ends up getting killed and I kill the two arseholes who are brothers and their fathers only sons (he's apparently an arsehole as well).

I then get arrested and am thrown into jail and you are told to break rocks and that it can take up to a year before you undergo a 'trial'. Someone in the pits goes 'psst' and calls you over. Basically they can get you an early trial but you have to owe them a favour which I agree to.

So I get out early to meet the jarl and then through the conversation tree it ends up where he asks me, honour bound, to help his son who is entering a 'cave of dreams' and he wants him to be safe.

So off I go and I find the jarls son. Instead of telling him his father sent me I just go 'oooh you happen to need a witcher at all, I demand a payment!' and go along for the ride.

I then go into the cave of dreams, do the quest and finish. The son goes essentially 'you cheeky bastard, you were honour bound to help me but here's your money. Get the fuck out of here'

End of quest and it looks like it could have gone some other ways with the dialogue choices as well and I don't know what the fuck is going to happen with this 'favour' I owe either

Loving it.

Wow I didn't know the game was so problematic: http://imgur.com/9hJJWvC

Given how polite everyone in The Witcher world is to anyone else, this is jarring indeed. /s

Seriously though... She's trying too hard. Sexism, racism and persecution are a part of the world the game is set in; you come across them around every corner. Geralt faces a lot of prejudice and hatred because of his mutation as well. So yes, it's in fact perfectly "realistic" for the characters in this world to be using gendered insults, as well as racial insults and everything else they come up with.
Sarkeesian is obviously intelligent, there's no way she doesn't realise this. She's just trying to stir up a controversy where there's none. :/

wot?

can you explain this? that sounds hella messed up.

In simplest terms, Emyr was after the prophecy which states that Ciri's child will rule the world. His minions chased her to the ends of the earth for that purpose, basically, to drag her back to Nilfgaard and make her empress. Until the very end that was his goal. He gave up after seeing her and meeting her basically in the last book. He went back and married the fake Ciri instead.

Basically,
Emhyr wants to marry Ciri so that he can take over Cintra, which was ruled by Queen Calanthe, Ciri's mother.
No one knows she's his daughter though, except Geralt and some others close to him.

Basically, though there's still
the prophecy. Yes he was trying to solidify rule of Cintra, but I think he could do that with an iron grip. He didn't need her for that.

Edit: I messed up the prophecy a bit:
Ciri's child would rule half the world, and the son of her son would rule the whole world.

And
before changing his mind Emhyr told Geralt and Yennefer to commit suicide. Emhyr var Emreis, father of the century.

I always find it funny how terrible she is at picking out this stuff given she does a video series on this sort of stuff.

First off, the game is chock full of racism, genocide, and sexism. Its a world of oppression, thats the point, the game handles mature topics well. The mass genocide of mages and nonhumans doesn't bother her but a woman being called a whore does?

Second off, The Witcher 3 is one of the most gender equal games to come out in a while. Triss, Yen, Ciri, etc are all fantastic developed characters that can support themselves.

She has no concept of the difference between sexism in a game and a game being sexist.

That's also the scene that convinced me there's no way I can have Geralt not choose Yennefer on my first play through at least.
They were ready to die together!

Also, more father of the year stuff:
He likely killed Pavetta, too!

Not likely, he totally got her killed.

That scene convinced me to do same on my second playthrough now that I've read the books.

I guess, she thinks there's a difference between insults towards a character based on their "mutation"/profession and one based on their gender? That's what I got out of those tweets, and in a way I tend to agree.

I tend to agree, too.
but on the other hand in that case the enemies would have insulted ciri the same way they insult geralt and CDPR probably wanted to go the extra mile and add new content. personally I think it's fine. the game has tons of great female characters, I wouldn't call it sexist.

on a personal note, I usually love to play females in rough world RPGs exactly because women are treated differently, makes playing a vengeful badass so much more satisfying, so I am extra fine with the way CDPR handled this

I'm all for progressive movements and advancing the cause of women and minorities, but trying to pretend that the world wasn't shit to women in the past is not the way to fix things today.

Don't care that there are monsters, or magic, or whatever. This is a gritty medieval setting, it would not be at all believable if everyone were polite and nice to each other, never using slurs or surly speech.

I really do not want this to turn into a thread about that... but it is is sad to see a single element of the game partially taken out of context and analysed for its political and social salience (context is key in the social sciences). Especially a game with a universe so well written and full of such potent characters.

The world of the witcher is a terrible place, I am not sure why we cannot read and understand it in that sense. It is terrible, filled with terrible people. Spoilers.

No Place Like Home was an amazing quest. I'm still laughing.

Re: Anita, I'm not sure singling out the hot game of the moment right after its release is a great way to further the discussion. I'm one of the people who firmly believe it's a very worthy discussion but
a) the whole idea of tropes is to discuss systemic issues in narratives.
b) with the game being so fresh and people (including myself) loving it so much, all she's going to get right now is some kneejerk wagon circling.

Quick question:
Just got the game, started the prologue on Deathmarch.

Just got the quest to kill the gryphon. It says level 3 recommended, but I'm still level 1, about 60 XP from level 2.

I've done every single other quest I've come across and the Witcher contract for the well.
find the pan, find the arsonist, find the brother lost on the battlefield, etc.

Is this normal for Death March? Or have I run into the XP bug?

edit: On a side note, has anyone on PC got a really good key layout? I've tinkered around with different set ups but I can't find a decent one where my fingers aren't playing twister during combat.

That's normal, quests a few levels above yours aren't really that much harder. You might still have trouble with the griffon, but it's supposed to be hard.

edit: Actually, while what I said is true, I don't think you're still supposed to be level 1. Maybe you did get hit with the xp bug.

I did the botching lumberskin quest. how far in the story am I % wise

the combat is still not clicking. what should I be upgrading? did fast attack upgrades and I use the slow trap as my go to spell, anything else and I'm woefully underpowered :/
