The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt |OT2| Wanted to find Ciri, but everything Gwent wrong

I just had a thought about the one thing I feel has been missing from this game for me. To qualify it I will say that I'm not much of a hardcore gamer and only usually ever play sports games. This has been my game of the current-gen by a long shot. I also haven't even made it to Skellige and only just met Triss.

Possibly the only thing missing from this game that I thought was brilliant about Skyrim was the emergent gameplay. Hell, I'm not even sure if that's the correct term but I'm rolling with it. There was a sense that no matter where you were at any given time, shit could go wrong fast. Here, it seems that the enemies are concentrated in very specific parts of the maps, rather than roaming through designated areas. There's never been guards joining in trying to help me tame some huge monster trying to attack a town. Perhaps its due to the lore it is based on? I am unfamiliar with it. But I do feel it would have added another dimension to exploration within the game. It made unpopulated areas still potentially feel menacing in Skyrim, but I don't quite get the same feeling here.

If anyone has any thoughts or thinks I'm way off the mark I'd be interested to hear it.

I've seen guards take on bandits/nekkers etc. Never a full on boss monsters though.

So on my PS4, south on the main island of Skellige, the game stutters a lot. Anyone else with this same issue?

If it's the place I'm thinking of where you enter a cave as part of a quest, yeah it's terrible. Not sure what the deal with that area is, but I got the worst stutter in the game there.

For a sign build, is there something to be said for using light armour with its faster stamina regen? That was the approach I was considering.

This is what I've been doing. Cat School gear because faster stamina regen. So I'm Active Shielding and Axii'ing all the time. It makes a decent difference – with Tawny Oil it makes a huge difference.

Shit and I was about to do this exact quest.

Cave of Dreams?

Yeah I got insane drops there too.

Man, I keep becoming incredibly paranoid that I'm going to miss something or already have inadvertently. The guide mentions something about me finding a magic crossbow and Gwent card in that fortress where you find the first of the Griffon diagrams, but I don't recall obtaining either. It's been a while since then and now I'm wondering if I should reset back a bit to see what I did wrong.

Guys I'm starting to play this tonight for the first time. I also want to get the platinum trophy for the game so I'm wondering if there's any missable trophies I need to look out for? Stoked to start playing it but don't want to do multiple playthroughs consider it's length :p

Speak to everyone you can about Gwent

And beat them to get their cards

Don't leave an area or finish a quest without beating everyone in it at Gwent

All Gwent cards are required for Plat and some unique ones, from unique characters, can be locked out and you can never get them again

Aside from that, it might be impossible to Plat in one playthrough. The game has an insane amount of alternating paths and variable outcomes. I imagine quite a few of these must be tied to trophies.

is this the cave with the statue puzzle? If so, I had issues there - the camera was up close the whole time and I was walking slow, and could not get back to normal until I exited. It acted like I was in a house.

I don't want to miss out on major experience point rewards, but I know quests that are lower level than you don't pay out much.

Should I therefore always prioritise main quests so I don't outlevel them too much? I have a ton of secondary and contract quests available right now, but I'm also the correct level for the next main quest.

So I'm heading into
Isle of Mist
and there's a warning prompt that there are quests that can't be done if I choose to proceed. Anyone know what quests I'll be missing out or
is it just the ones relating to the persons you ask help from to battle the Wild Hunt? Like Dijkstra, Cerys, Triss, etc

No, they're talking about something else. You're talking about the
cave in Novigrad where you get the cat gear
.

Forget light armor. Get medium armor (especially griffin armor that increases sign intensity) and use the perk that increases stamina regeneration when using medium armor.

I'm going with a sign build and I'm using Griffin gloves, pants, boots.... and bear armor. Because bear armor looks infinitely better than griffin armor. I only have enhanced so far though.

I completed all the Brothers in Arms quests, and I didn't fail any quests when I entered the Isle of Mists. Just to be safe, I recommend making a separate save file when you go in and see what happens.

That is a good look I'll admit.

Where do you get better crossbows and such? I'm trying to obtain some diagrams in an underwater cave, but can't get past these drowners.

Underwater drowners can fuck right off. I really hate swimming in this game and I hate even more trying to fight while swimming. So when I see drowners in the water, I just pull down the console and type "killall" (which does what it says - kills all visible enemies).

That is the only cheat I use other than the one that gives you a ton more inventory capacity (I think I have 360 right now).

I'd love to have swimming and underwater combat improved by mods, but I'm not holding my breath.

I actually changed from Griffin gear with the perk to Cat gear without the perk, obviously, and the stamina regeneration is actually better with Griffin if you have the perk. So if you don't want to use the perk, go with Cat, otherwise, stay with Griffin. I recommend the latter.

I also respecced to Alchemy today, full Bear set and whatnot. It's so much fun to be able to chug so many potions during a fight, And have each one heal you for 25% of max hp, and I can get hit noticeably more with the increased health pool. The damage output seems kinda low though, but maybe that's because I didn't find upgrades to most of my potions and oils.

Swordsmanship seems to be the most fun spec to choose (dat Whirl and the max lvl sign cast with 3 adrenaline points), Signs get overpowered very quickly and Alchemy can get boring when I have to pause the game to apply an appropriate oil and drink 4 potions on top of the ones I have in quickslots.

This game is going to ruin a lot of other older RPGs for me... its just going to be so hard to go back to the 'stale' dialogue. The script here is fantastic, I want to try out all the options just to hear more of the back story and I generally never do that.

Damn that looks good. Way better than pot belly wizard Geralt.

Welp, now I know what I'll be searching for when I get home.

Same here. I almost always pick all the grey options before the yellow.

Anyone know if there's lyrics somewhere for all the chanting in the battle music? I'm pretty sure it's not just random mumbo jumbo, but I can't find it anywhere...

just got through the Red Baron quest. It's probably some of the best written dialog I've seen in a game yet -- not just the words, but the facial expressions, the 'teary eyes'.. everything is so well done

If you're on PC there's a mod that swaps Griffin Armor's look to the Ursine armor's.

God damn horse races are awful in this game. I mean it's essentially a minigame that tests how well you can abuse NPC pathing and handle Roach's shitty collision detection.

I'm like 90% sure the race AI is just the "follow" AI, I mean, if you 'walk' with your horse close to other racers they follow suite, it's pretty silly.

Yennefer can fuck right off. I don't know much about her backstory, but they're making her a very unlikable character. I can't recall a single scene in this game where I felt like being nice to her. So I give her every negative reaction possible in conversations.

At one point when carrying on with the story, I noticed that I automatically failed a side quest. So I checked to see what it was. Turns out it was related to Yennefer. She needed my help with something apparently. Well, too bad, bitch.

Triss all the way for me. She may have used Geralt, but I'm actually enjoying the scenes with her in this game. Shame she doesn't have more screen time :(

I don't get this hate for Yen. Ther's some really beautiful moments between the two. Yen is perfect for Geralt because he doesn't take orders from anyone, not even the emperor... except for Yen. It makes him so much more a "normal" down to earth guy that he has this weakness for her. The dynamic between them is much more interesting. And it's fun when between the bickering she sneaks in a genuine compliment or sign of affection like when she moans about something Geralt has done only to compliment him on his beard a moment later. And in the end they are really happy to have each other.

Underwater drowners are super easy to take out--far easier than fighting on land. I've yet to come across an underwater drowner that my crossbow couldn't kill in one shot.

You are just targeting and tapping RB, right? Not manually aiming? It basically autotargets/kills them if they're not behind cover.

Yeah, cat gear's pretty awesome. Fast attack, quen and axii build here. With thunderbolt + tawny owl + specific oil makes Geralt a fast twirling witcher of doom. Death March just feels like normal mode now.

Haha, haven't tried that really, not surprised though. It's obvious they half-assed it to add something more to do in the game.

Hah, I liked that the mushroom you investigate in King's Gambit was called mardroem or psilocybe. Someone at CDPR has a bad shrooms experience!

Speaking of that quest, I've seen a lot of praise for it but I found kinda short and lame... I did about 10 minutes of detective work with Cerys and it was over. Is Hjalmar's path that much more interesting?

Nothing I've seen of Yen yet shows why Geralt gives a fuck about her. TW3 doesn't do a good job of catching you up on that from 1&2 if you haven't played them. It seems really weird and out of character for him to be all lovey dovey in almost every response early in Skellige and it's very annoying.

I never use my crossbow for anything. It takes forever to load and I hate using it.

It is.
Cave of dreams area, even tho the cave itself had no issues. Actually, now that i did the whole cave, i wonder if the stutter is gone,
i am walking on the other side of the peninsula with no stutter.

Still... thought my ps4 was doing something weird. even turned it off and reloaded my file. Very very annoying.

Completed the game after 87 hours.

Acts 1 and 2 are phenomenal, act 3 is poor.

Overall, the best game of 2015 so far. I doubt it will be the best by end of the year though.
