My main gripe with the game is the combat. In the 40 hours or so I played so far it's mostly the same thing. No new mechanics to shake thing up, it's the same easy thing again and again. Pretty sure they will patch the mind control Axii thing. I did a quest that was twice my level with it. For some reason the mind controlled enemies pretty much kill everything in one hit so you just stand away and let it whack everything while dodging.

Heh at the poor/fake Swedish that the Skellige language is.

Anyway, I am not able to talk to the alchemist/herbalist in northeastern Novigrad who's supposed to be able to buy monster trophies at full price. I was able to talk to him once many hours back on my current save files, but whenever I show up now he just stands there, and it's not possible to chat him up. Anyone else experienced the same and knows how to fix it?

Have the same exact problem

yes, the combat is average.

How many cards can you get from one person by beating them in Gwent? It's just one right?

i think it's just one. one time i thought i got another by replaying, but i wasn't sure about that.

So guys, swamp spoilers
I killed the heart of the tree and went back and talked to the disgusting ass witches. How bad did I fuck up by killing the tree thing?

Am I the only one with absolutely no money, no food, or potions all the time? Where are you guys finding money and potions? I am doing the "finding the witch" quest. Got to the boss battle and have nothing to heal myself with and realized ive been struggling with this the entire game...granted i havent done many side quests...

In the entire game? No.

It would be a real shame to spoil this so just continue with the main quest.

Yeah I don't want things totally spoiled by any means just wanted to know if I made the wrong choice. The whole situation was totally messed up and I had no idea what to choose as they don't give you enough context.

Things are pretty fucked up no matter what you do there. Just in different ways.

Yeah that's kind of the vibe I got. Neither choice seemed to be "good" to me so I had no idea what to do

so I should move onto the tris novo grad mission next?

Yes. You can go to Skellige if you want but it's a lot harder.

Just meditate and if you have any alcohol in the inventory all your potions will replenish. Food should be used in emergency situations only, when you run out of swallow.

I feel like they made a mistake with how they structured Novigrad/Skellige. Most people will naturally do all they can in Novigrad before moving on, which leads to being level 18+ and having outleveled most things in Skellige. They should have either rebalanced the zone or made you go there in the middle of Novigrad quests and locked the side stuff out

While we're on Menge, this reminds me,
is there a way to make him reveal where Dijkstra's treasure is ? I wanted to cut the torture short so I ignored the dialog option to ask him where it was. So Dijsktra was a bitch about it alter (I hate that guy).
Dude, you're crazy.
Dijkstra and Geralt being assholes to each other is half the fun.
I love their interactions.

There really needs to be some kinda storage feature. I hate that they ditched that. Having to carry around all my witcher gear in case I want to upgrade it 10 levels from now is a real drag.

Oh well. Guess I'll just have to mod the weight limit.

Just buy the saddlebag that adds 100 weight. I had like 20 swords and multiple armor sets before I had to go to the blacksmith and sell stuff. Which took less than a minute.

So it looks like I ran into a game breaking glitch. I'm on the
Talk to Dijkstra about Whoreson's ties to the Redanians
and it does not do anything when I walk to the door...

Yeah, I think that was definitely intentional. They left you with relatively little information to make that choice based off of, so you really just have to go with your gut. I quite like that, personally, as it sort of mirrors the nature of many choices IRL. You don't always have the information needed to make the "right" or "best" choice, so you just have to choose and live with the consequences.

He was mostly an asshole to me. That's my first Witcher game though (played TW 2 for a couple hours and I hated the combat system), so maybe that's why he always comes of as an asshole to me ?

He is a character from the books he doesn't appear in any previos Witcher games(at least not as a major character).

Go hunt the wildlife - deers, goats, bears, cows, horses... and sell their hides. Cow hides sell for 41 coins if you sell it to the Wild Orchard innkeeper. Also, make sure you sell any extra weapons/armor etc you find to smiths and armorers. Doing sidequests gets you these extra things to sell.

Goddamn, so many interesting sidequests.

Gonna be hell to replay this once I get it on PC (and a PC that can properly run it in its full glory).

Do we know if the DLC (those big expansion packs) could be played on a fresh install of the game, or do you need to be in a specific level range?

Yeah, a lot of people still have a ways to go in the game.
A black bar with no context represents a gamble. A gamble I've lost on a few times already.

I like that guy.
The dialogue between the two is ploughin' ace.

I really enjoyed this treasure hunt except for
fighting the dragon at the top of the lighthouse...the combat system in this game was not meant for such a small fighting space.

I didn't even
fight it, though I did encounter some hilarious collision glitches with the dragon flying into walls and walking in midair.

no idea what you're talking about. Novigrad is just the town, and I'm not seeing many quests here.

You did the right thing. In one of the lore books you can find. It mentions the spirit is the Crones mother, killed and sealed away for being eviler than them and a right pain in everyone's arse.
Responsible for deaths while locked away, and Downwarren is fucked entirely if you release her.

Woah. Just came across a quest/contract based on a gem of a dark fantasy novel,
The Sad Tale of The Brothers Grossbart.

This fuckin game.

If only the book was telling the truth,
but it's not

A whole bunch of side quests open up when you start doing the main story. I thought Id get throught it quickly too but ended up spending almost 10 hours there

Has anyone else discovered that you can cast Axii on your horse (while riding it) to lower its fear level in combat?

I'd always wondered why Axii was the only sign available on horseback, and now I know!

Careful with that goal post. You initial said people didn't like it because they didn't want to think in their games, an insulting and frankly bad post.

As you your other points: spamming light attack and using quen give me the highest dps. I literally cannot kill things more efficiently; the animation time on signs and bombs lower my output. Have no need for stamina, rage works just fine. And yeah, I have the whirl attack. Now I can hold square instead of pushing it.

I don't care if you like the combat. I really don't. I do care when people do to drastic, insulting lengths to justify a system.

The goal post hasn't moved at all: the point of that post was to show that you hadn't thought much about the combat system given the alternatives to Quen. Everything I said was true for lower levels: someone who just relies on Quen all the time is not thinking about how the game works. Now that I know roughly what level you are and your spec, I can go into more detail about what I think you may have possibly missed in your testing. For higher levels, I will admit that my statement relies on theorycraft since it'll be another 20 hours before I get there but, given that you are still using light attacks rather than just whirling, I think that there are still other things you can do to boost your dps which you may want to reconsider since you have allegedly tested these.

It sounds like you are spamming an unbuffed Quen using adrenaline points which means that each Quen can only take a handful of hits before going down (1-2 hits in my lower level experience on Death March). Quen boosts your dps by allowing you to swing your sword in the time that you would have used to dodge. This may not, however, actually be a dps boost since dodging in the right direction often positions you behind or beside your opponent for bonus critical hits which, given that you've spec'ed for fast attacks, are huge sources of damage so you might want to dodge anyway even with Quen up to reposition, thus devaluing Quen. Sign alternatives that might actually boost dps are Aard which might give you an instant kill while guaranteeing you 1-3 sword hits with its AoE stagger, and Igni which also AoE staggers them for you to land 1-3 hits. This is especially true against humans who will parry most of your attacks, and you'll have to do 3-4 attacks just to break through their guard if you use Quen or wait for them to attack so that you can parry and counter which wastes time and Quen duration from getting hit unless you're dodging... in which case, you didn't need Quen anyway. With rage, you can even chain Aards together for 2-6 consecutive hits while staggering most of the enemies if you've positioned them right.

Concerning bombs, I think that you're underestimating the free attacks that they give you. For example, you could open with the Northern Wind bomb which freezes every enemy in a decent radius for 8 seconds (basic bomb) and gives you free attacks with bonus damage while they're frozen. When your target recovers (everyone else is still frozen), follow up with Aard to extend your combo for more unblockable damage or instant kills. Again, that's 2-6 connecting attacks in a row. You've probably already killed someone in your opening salvo. You can even throw Quen up before you enter combat and your stamina regens to full so that you have both Quen and another sign ready to go.

I'll admit again that I'm not high level and perhaps it all changes when you get there and you do end up killing things in 1-3 hits so a single Quen is actually pretty significant. If you can't kill them in one sword combo, however, it seems like there are much better alternatives for raising your damage than Quen and ignoring other signs and bombs completely. With other signs and bombs, you do end up with a quick and deadly Geralt who will slice a man down before anyone can respond.
