You picked the right difficulty if its its blood and broken bones. Anything lower and the games way too easy outside of the first few hours where you're still getting used to things.
- It may be worth watching a story recap of at least the 2nd game on Youtube. Three does an ok job getting you up to speed, but there's a lot of stuff happen, particularly in the second game that build straight into it
- Good piece of advice you see a lot is to turn minimap icons off. That way it doesn't become a go to the nearest waypoint to do the thing type game, and you can explore a little more.
- Something alot of people miss till later is meditating replenishes your potion stock as long as you have strong alcohol in your inv (alcoholest, Dwarven spirit etc). Craft a swallow potion as soon as you can and you'll be good for healing between encounters
- Turn off fisheye cam for witcher vision. Seriously
- Side quests, are totally worth doing for their stories but don't always offer alot of xp. Main xp gains are done through the mainline story quests
- When upgrading your character skills, make sure to slot them in the tree on the right, in a section with a matching mutagen color. I don't think this was explained particularly well and its pretty easy to miss. It can lead to "Why isn't that skill upgrade working?" type moments
- Quen is an OP spell for big slow monsters. Keep it up and dodge around and smack them up. If they hit you recast and continue
- If your having trouble with particular monsters remember to check the bestiary that will show what signs, bombs etc they are weak against.
- Choose red or black. Not both.
- Plenty more I'm sure, but most of all,
enjoy. Even with some slightly wonky character control and combat that could be better, it really is an amazing game that will stay with me for a long, long time
