Have you patched the game? Earlier versions had some performance troubles.

Yeah, I caved in and bought the Enhanced Edition Box :lol. They haven't released any patches after the EE patch, have they?

Edit: Saw there was a Vista hotfix that supposedly fixed performance issues, but I already have that update installed :(.

I also have had no crash issues yet and am running on Vista 64 with a Radeon 4850. Also deep into Chapter 2. Dunno what to tell you.
Eh, as I said, I'm moderately sure it's my dual monitor setup. I'm gonna book the one "hard" crash as coincidence, and the rest of them as VGA driver issue. It's not like it crashes every 20 minutes. I don't mind anymore, and I've adopted a save early, save often strategy to avoid having to redo too much in case of a crash. They seem to be occurring less frequently recently anyway, from five times every session down to two times max. Maybe the gaming gods have pity on me. :D

I dunno, i've been playing the original edition patched to the EE on a Vista 64 machine with everything maxed at 1900x1200 and having no trouble at all (some slight slowdowns in some areas when rotating the camera, but nothing unplayable). My machine is plenty powerful for the game (Q9450 with the older 8800GTS and 4 Gb of ram) but it's no excuse for your slowdowns.

just started playing, great atmosphere, this reminds me the old wrpg, really awesome.

I have only one complaint: the vsync is completely absent, and during the cutscene there is a lot of tearing.
I tried to force the vsync through the catalyst control center (8.12 drivers, radeon 4850) but still doesn't work.
Any suggestions?

There's an official patch in their forums to fix the blood in combat, I don't think you can get it from doing a game update. There are quite a few interesting mods there as well, if you look around.

Are you talking about this?: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12874451&postcount=813

Force AF in the drivers and it should be solved.

By the way, just for other unfortunate souls: turns out that my crashes were due to a shitty BIOS version. Gigabyte really lost me as a customer with this motherboard. The hardware is pretty nice, but the BIOS revisions are nothing short of atrocious.

If any unsuspecting GA-MA790GP-DS4H owners happen to have the same problems: downgrade to the last "good" version, aka F2, if you can (depends on RAM&CPU). Better boot times, power now stuff actually works for a change, better RAM compatibility and better hidden BIOS options. Stay the fuck away from F3. I lost all my saves to that piece of shit. Simply crashes on bootup and doesn't even initialize the monitor but happily scrambles the HDD contents, if you use certain options (like using ONLY the sideport RAM when another dedicated GPU is present).

Uncalled for.

But quite true. ES has always sacrificed narrative and character for having a huge open world. Which makes Oblivion that much shittier, because its quests and world suck compared to Morrowind and its size looks sad next to Daggerfall

I hear the story is one of the best for any RPG. However, what I hear of the gameplay I am not too eager to play.

There is a demo. And the console version is going to be spicing up the gameplay, well combat anyway.

Gameplay at an isometric angle feels a little like Diablo, a little like Gothic, a little like this, a little like that. It's passable.

If anything, you will be seduced by a Brut-wearing middle aged albino. I was. After playing the demo, I'm all about this game right now.

I just meant that I loved TES series without really slandering a more linear RPG. I don't have a preference for how my game is role played as long as it's a good game. When I said "uncalled for" I'm saying that it's not necessary to insult the Elder Scrolls games to prove your point to me.

I prefer a non-linear game at times if only because I've always been an explorer at heart, but I am open to a more traditional linear story.

Just got this for my girlfriend for her birthday. I want to play it too but obviously she gets first dibs :lol She's been wanting this game for a while now.

Confirmed Asshole
Bought the game yesterday for 20€ (EE) - holy shit was I in for a surprise.

I mean, I always dug what it did concerning story and setting, and I'm generally into good RPGs. But this one is the shit.

Everything's right here - the combat, the leveling, the minigames, it's not too easy (playing it on hard) and so forth.
Okay, the german voice actors are crap in my opinion. That's a problem. But I'll survive.

Are the english VAs awesome? Might switch audio then.

Oh, the shadow algorithm is kinda broken, it seems. Sometimes, shadows are projected onto rather remote surfaces, regardless where the original caster actually is. Doesn't really bug me, but I'm pretty sure they could fix that.

When I first opened the character leveling screen, I thought 'Huh, I don't get it'. And then I got how it works. And then my brain was blown out. Jesus, this game is really wide open concerning stats customization and leveling benefits. Wow.

Right now, I'm in the first town, have a fucktown of quests to handle and am loving what's going on.

So far, great game. Poland wins!

I kinda wish I spoke polish right now to experience the game as originally intended. Oh well.

I *love* this game. It's a genuine classic, as far as I'm concerned. The Enhanced Edition, anyway. I never played the original release.

edit: The English voice acting is pretty good. Geralt is awesome, other character are all over the place.

edit edit: How in the hell does this thread only have ~1000 posts after TWO YEARS. This is AAA stuff.

Wmat, set the audio to polish and enable subtitles. Best of both worlds. Some timings are off, but Geralt&friends sound much better than in german.

I have been putting this game off because my computer is shit, I started playing it today with an older computer I put together with older parts.

Newer System Specs

Pentium 4 3.06 ghz
2gigs of DDR 400
XFX 7300 GT

Older System Specs

Amd Athlon XP 2800+ 2.09 ghz
1 gig of DDR 333
XFX 6600 GT

Pentium 4's are so shitty.

yeah i'm up to 3rd chapter but seems to be running worse as time goes on. partly it might be all the warm weather here, i've resorted to turning a fan onto my laptop at times to keep framerates up and creating a new user with every setting that has an off, set to it.

i enjoy the game immensely but framerate and load times is making me think i'll put it off until the next upgrade.

This is pc gaming dude :lol. We should probably be thankful that people still even remember this thread after 2 years. So im playing the game again after stopping at the end of chapter 2 in the regular version because the had just announced the EE and loadtimes between buildings in vizima was atrocious. God, I don't like this chapter at all. It feels like it's dragging BUT I have noticed it's a lot fucking easier to get into Shani's house. They made that old bitch a lot less annoying.

Got the regular edition game for 99¢ on eBay.

Only problem is, it's the PAL version and for some reason won't let me register it online. The CD Key is imprinted on the clear circle in the center of the DVD, but it's not registering. Apparently I have to give the CD Key to Atari's tech support and they'll get back to me with a key that will work.

Pain in my ass.

In the meantime, I'm listening to the soundtrack and it's awesome.

Just want to say that I am LOVING this game... probably one of my top WRPGs, right up there with Bioware and I'm liking it more than Bethesda's stuff honestly.

I actually think the English voice acting is quite good, and the graphics are really good for a 2 year old game. Combat is cool and FLUID, which is super important to me (I hate herky-jerky slash fests).

My biggest complaint is lack of upgrades....I really want to deck out Gerard with some new armor! I understand that in order to do "witcher" moves he needs lightweight, special armor yadda yadda, but still some variety would be nice... There is one piece of armor I see for sale for 5000, but I barely have that much gold and don't know if its worth it? I think in the sequel they should really add to the armor/weapon customization -- its my biggest complaint so far.

For those who have finished it, I am currently at the part where
you are at the village with the wedding after you get transported, and the bride/sister just died
. How far would you say I am (percent-wise)?

Thanks!

Finally got around to this. i love most of it so far.. the story, setting, alchemy.. but god damn if the combat isnt horrible. i mean its good when it works, but when you enter a door and zone into a new area and right away 4 dudes are gangbanging you before you can even pull your fucking sword out or turn the damn camera to face them.. ffs! That one part in chapter 1 got me so fucking pissed. i had to reload at least 20 times.

And the freaking decision to
have you enter the fucking fight with the Beast after a super long dialogue and then a cutscene with no opportunity to save or prepare was pure bullshit. There was an autosave but after reloading it takes like 2-3 full fucking seconds before Geralt is under your control.. no pausing, no sword pulling, no dodging or flipping.. just an eternity in seconds of Geralt and the witch getting fucking owned. i tried my best to save her since i thought she would die like how the other escort lady would die. Only after looking online did i discover that she falls "unconscious" did i just focus on saving my own skin. i also found out a 2 hour Swallow doesnt last from the Cave until the Beast fight which was again bullshit. Oh and i like how access to the storage area is taken away so i cant fucking make the shit i needed to buff.

Patching this is a pain in the ass. I would have gladly paid 39.99 and gotten it off steam if I knew this was going to be a hassle.
Got it for 14.99 from newegg.

edit:
Modifying game files now, is this seriously going to take two hours? I have two programs running.
#1
The Witcher Enhanced Edition - Actualization Pack - InstallShield Wizard

#2
The Witcher Patch(Not Responding)

If #2 seriously messed up then I have to reinstall again, fucking lame.

Yes, yes, yes! Really amazingly idiotic design there, it makes you wonder how on earth it didn't get fixed up through testing. I think it's the only part like that in the game though.

I have owned this game for several months and (shamefully) never got around to playing it. Just yesterday I installed the game, the patches, and the new missions. I also ordered "The Last Wish" on my Kindle. I'm going to read a short story per night this next week, then start the game next Friday.

Is there any particular reason to read "Blood of Elves" before playing as well?

i hope to god it is since im past that part lol. i replayed the first chapter and totally redid my playstyle though: before i even did one sidequest i just killed Echinopsae and collected herbs. The only quest i did was the one so i could play dice and clean out Odo so many many many times. i was level 7 before i started any quests.. had about 50 White Gulls, a handful of every potion and oil i could make, two swords with different oils going, every entry i could think of (the old ladys), spent 1000 orens on crafting a 3x red meteor sword.. i would say that i was prepared this time. i was level 12 when it was all said and done.

Wow. The best way I found to prepare for the Beast was just to level up Aard and try to stun him. Doesn't work every time, but after two or three goes you should one shot him especially if you've used the place of power. Whatever works though. I probably did all that stuff on my first playthrough too, but this time around I'm skipping a lot of the extra stuff. I used to hate seeing Unknown Herb everywhere, but I've gotten used to it.

Well i meant prepared in general. The thing that frustrated me with the Beast fight was that i thought i had to keep
Abigail
alive for the fight. Its a cakewalk if i can just focus on my own self and not worry about protecting someone from a swarm of barghests. i tried that fight about 10 times or so.. going through the dialogues and the cutscenes each time.. all in an attempt to keep them from dying in the first 5 seconds. When i looked online if there was some trick to saving her, thats when i found out that she cannot die in battle. The only other time that i had an escort type quest, the person being escorted could very easily die with me failing the quest.. so for the developers to change things up mid-chapter was kind of odd i thought.

Also im playing on hard.. but im not sure exactly how much more difficult things are because i didnt even bother with normal or easy.

I've put around seven hours into the game now and I've just reached the second chapter. This game is fucking brilliant, in a way I'm glad that the console port got canceled because it pushed me to play this now, yet sad that they had to cancel a project. I have a feeling that this game may be one of the very best RPGs, scratch that, game that I have ever played if the quality remains high and fun throughout the entire game. The story is great, finally something different! I could go on and on about this game. 360 owners would eat this game up if it was properly marketed, it's so much better than any of the RPGs on that console. When the sequel comes out I'll pick up the pc and 360 version to support the dev.

Which version was canceled? The White Wolf?

Rise of the White Wolf. I'm in Chapter II now and there's waaaaay more sidequests, this is going to take a while!

Hey guys, I'm proud to say that after 2 and a half years, I've finally finished the Witcher. :lol

I had stopped playing at Act IV (so boring), but lost that save after an OS format about a year and a half ago. After starting up again (EE this time), I stopped again at Act IV (seriously, it's that boring), but finally sat down and played the rest of the game through late last week.

Woot!

Excellent game, but there's one question I have about the end:
WTF @ Jacques having Alvin's pendant... did Alvin teleport into the past and become him?

Yeah, it definitely dwarfs the first chapter in scope (what a horrible pun).

Word to the wise; you might want to keep less than five save files. There's an error you might encounter that I did-- the "IFO file" error. I wasn't able to load my most recent saved game. Apparently, it's a known issue.

I picked up the Standard Edition for £15 over the weekend, had been waiting for the console version but I figured that'll never see the light of day. Upgrade to EE was painless.

Anyway, glad I did. Been thinking about the game while not playing, so I think I can safely say it has its hooks in me.

I'm around about the same place as the last few posters - a little way through chapter2 and getting scared at the amount of quests that have suddenly popped up!

Chapter 1 was quite good but it was frustrating that almost every quest sent you to the other end of the map. I know it wasn't the biggest map in the world but it still annoyed me. Also I hate it when combat starts out of a cutscene or when you enter a building, though I've just remembered you can pause the game which may help somewhat.

Got a question though - what are those magical engergy things for? I get they enhance sign power (I think?) but unlike everything else in the game I cannot find any information on them.

Also on chapter one where you
bury the body, a ghost appeared to have a natter (can't remember its name, but it looked important!) - my Journal says its the second time they've spoken, and yet I can't remember the first. Did I miss something?
