A new family is set to get by with a little help from their friends, as the theme song goes. The Wonder Years, the nostalgic 1980s-'90s comedy-drama about a young boy growing up in the 1960s, is coming back with a new look. ABC will reboot the iconic show to focus on a Black family in 1960s Alabama, and Fred Savage, who starred as young Kevin Arnold in the original show, will direct.

The half-hour show will cover the same time period as the original show, which was took place from 1968 to 1973. Filmmaker Lee Daniels will serve as executive producer, with Saladin Patterson as writer and executive producer.

Rock n roll, and the 60’s and 70’s are re-surging in interest, probably some execs saw the data and decided to revive this show with a spin.

Given that it’s being done by ABC and given the time period, this is going to end up being an even more serious “Black-ish” isn’t it?

I really liked “Black-ish” but if I want a show that’s going to get even heavier than that then I may as well watch “The Wire” again.

Honestly calling the a Wonder Years reboot is not helping it. As a premise for a sitcom it seems fine, but I'd give it an original title so people don't associate it to a reboot and bash it.

Truth told I think that era pisses people off more these days, "Don't worry my sugar honey wifey, you can stay at home with the kids, my six hour a day job will be enough to own this 3 bedroom luxury house, our first car, land ownership and pay for all our shopping needs. However we might need to save for a month or two to afford that second car".

It still appealed to people that weren't in that age range. Most kids I knew loved the show even though we had no attachment to the 60's, and I remember my parents caring little for it even though it should have been more nostalgic to them.

I guess having it set in the 80's/90's would make it more relevant to kids of that era that are grown up now, but I don't think it would hold that same weight as a time period like the 60's does.

I was very young when it came out, but I always appreciated the show. The experiences he had while growing up weren't that outdated. Few shows have ever recreated those moments that well.

We all know what this show is going to be about. Stirring up more racial tension. How he's not allowed to have white friends or like white girls. Getting stopped by the police. Etc etc

This is where I’m at. It’s a strong premise and Fred Savage directing kinda sorta justifies keeping the Wonder Years name. If it’d been announced five or ten years ago, I’d be very intrigued. In 2020 I’m interested but wary.

I think this show sounds interesting enough, and using the same name makes sense for marketing IMO. To the extent this counts as a reboot, I am cool with reboots like this. Its a different story with someone else's perspective.

Sounds like an interesting premise. I might check it out. I think The Wonder Years as a concept is a non-specific enough concept that a reboot like this is just fine.

I could sorta see a grown-up spin off with Savage as a dad (wait, has that already been done?) but this is just a name grab. Minimal interest no matter who is in it or when it is set.
